Chapter 3 - By midnight, the stranger was gone. The gates had been locked.

Every guard had searched the grounds.

No footprints were found.

No vehicle had entered or left.

It was as if the man had simply stepped out of the camera and disappeared.

But Adrian couldn't stop staring at the frozen image.

"Do you know him?" Elena asked.

"No."

"You recognized him."

"I recognized the way he was standing."

"That's not an answer."

Adrian looked away.

Maya approached with Emma.

The baby had fallen asleep again.

"She hasn't cried since the cameras came back."

Elena looked at her.

"How did they come back?"

Maya held up the security tablet.

"They didn't."

"What?"

"The system is pretending."

She tapped the screen.

"This isn't a live feed."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Explain."

"Someone created a loop. We're watching recorded footage from twenty minutes ago."

Elena felt a chill.

"Then the guards have been searching the wrong place."

Maya nodded.

"They've been searching for a man who may never have left the house."

Everyone looked around.

The police officer immediately ordered another sweep.

Doors slammed open.

Closets were searched.

The basement was checked.

The attic was checked.

No one was found.

Then Olivia screamed from the hallway.

Adrian ran.

She stood outside her bedroom.

The wall beside her bed had been opened.

Not damaged.

Opened.

A hidden panel revealed a narrow passage behind the walls.

Olivia pointed inside.

"I heard someone in there."

Adrian drew a gun.

Elena caught his arm.

"Don't go alone."

"I'm not."

Maya grabbed a flashlight.

The officer followed.

They entered the passage.

The air smelled old.

Dust coated the floor.

The passage ran behind several rooms.

Then they saw cables.

Hundreds of them.

Security lines.

Power lines.

Audio wires.

Someone had built an entire surveillance network inside the walls.

Adrian stared.

"This house wasn't supposed to have this."

Maya touched one cable.

"These were installed recently."

"How recently?"

"Within the last year."

Elena looked at Adrian.

"You renovated the house."

"Yes."

"You never saw this?"

"No."

Maya turned her flashlight toward the wall.

There were photographs pinned between the cables.

Elena.

Olivia.

Emma.

Adrian.

Vanessa.

Pictures from months ago.

Some had been taken from outside windows.

Some from inside the house.

One showed Elena sleeping on a sofa.

Another showed Olivia at school.

Another showed Emma in the nursery.

Adrian stared at the photographs.

"Who took these?"

A voice came from somewhere deeper in the passage.

"You finally found them."

Everyone froze.

The officer raised his gun.

"Come out!"

Silence.

Then the lights in the passage turned on.

A screen mounted in the wall flickered alive.

A video began playing.

Adrian watched himself entering his study three years earlier.

Then Vanessa appeared.

Then another person.

A man.

Older.

He handed Vanessa an envelope.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who is that?"

Maya paused the video.

Zoomed in.

The man's face appeared clearly.

Adrian dropped the flashlight.

"No."

Elena looked at him.

"Who?"

He whispered.

"My father."

The room went silent.

"Your father died twelve years ago," the officer said.

"I know."

The video continued.

Adrian's father looked directly toward the camera.

His lips moved.

No audio.

Maya isolated the sound.

Static.

Breathing.

Then one sentence.

"Adrian, if you're watching this, it means they found the child."

Adrian backed away.

"What child?"

The video showed Vanessa holding a baby.

Not Emma.

A different baby.

Elena stared at the screen.

"When was this recorded?"

Maya checked the file date.

Her face changed.

"Three months before Emma was born."

Adrian turned toward Vanessa.

She wasn't in the passage.

"Where is Vanessa?"

Nobody answered.

They rushed back into the hallway.

The foyer was empty.

The front door was locked.

The windows were shut.

Vanessa had disappeared.

On the floor where she had been standing was a single envelope.

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Emma.

On the back:

SHE IS NOT THE FIRST CHILD YOU LOST.

And beneath it was a location.

An abandoned hospital.

Elena looked at Adrian.

"Did you lose another child?"

Adrian couldn't speak.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name he hadn't seen in twelve years.

DANIEL VALE.

Adrian answered.

A whisper came through.

"She's coming for you."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then:

May you like

"Your daughter."

The call ended.
