Chapter 10 - The staircase downward seemed endless. No windows.

No cameras.

No sound except their breathing.

Adrian walked first.

Daniel followed.

Elena carried Emma.

Olivia stayed beside Maya.

At the bottom they found the archive.

Shelves stretched farther than the eye could see.

Every shelf was labeled with a year.

Every box contained names.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

Adoption papers.

Death certificates.

Passport copies.

Photographs.

Maya opened one.

"This is a list of children transferred between hospitals."

Elena looked at it.

"How many?"

"Thousands."

Adrian found a file with his father's signature.

He opened it.

The first page was a ledger.

Payments.

Dates.

Initials.

Names.

Then he saw one name.

ELENA HART.

Beside it:

STATUS: REPLACEMENT.

Elena's stomach turned.

Another entry:

CLAIRE VALE. STATUS: DECEASED.

Then:

ACTUAL STATUS: ACTIVE.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

"He kept everything."

Adrian turned another page.

A list of buyers.

Politicians.

Executives.

Doctors.

Judges.

Lawyers.

It wasn't just a family secret.

It was an empire.

Maya looked at Adrian.

"We need to copy all of this."

Adrian nodded.

"Do it."

Then Olivia saw something.

"Dad."

A box with her name.

Adrian opened it.

Inside were photos of Olivia from infancy.

School reports.

Medical records.

Every major event in her life.

And one envelope.

He opened it.

IF OLIVIA EVER FINDS THE ARCHIVE, KILL HER.

Adrian's face went blank.

Olivia read it over his shoulder.

"Why would he want me dead?"

Daniel's voice was low.

"Because you were never supposed to exist."

Adrian turned.

"What?"

Daniel pointed to another document.

A birth contract.

Olivia's mother had signed it.

The agreement specified that the child would be raised by Adrian but remain under Vale family control.

Elena stared.

"Was she purchased too?"

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"She was the witness."

"What does that mean?"

"She was born at the wrong time."

He pointed to the date.

"Olivia was born the same week our father discovered someone had copied the archive."

Adrian's expression changed.

"He thought she knew."

"She was a baby."

"He didn't care."

The lights went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Maya screamed.

When the emergency lights returned, Daniel was gone.

Adrian spun around.

"Daniel!"

No answer.

Then they heard a metal door close.

Elena looked toward the end of the archive.

A small red light blinked.

Maya rushed there.

"It's a recording."

The screen showed Daniel sitting in a chair.

He was bruised.

Blood ran from his lip.

Someone stood behind him.

The old man.

Adrian's father.

He leaned toward the camera.

"You've spent years believing Daniel betrayed you."

Adrian stared.

"But he didn't."

The old man smiled.

"I did."

Daniel looked directly at the camera.

"Adrian, listen."

The old man struck him.

"Don't speak."

Daniel ignored him.

"The child you chose wasn't Elena."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

Daniel looked straight at him.

"You chose Claire."

The old man smiled.

"But I switched them."

Elena felt her knees weaken.

"You switched us?"

The recording continued.

"I took Claire away."

The old man leaned toward the camera.

"And I kept Elena."

Adrian whispered:

"Why?"

His father smiled.

"Because Elena was the only child who could expose me."

The screen went black.

Then a second image appeared.

Vanessa.

She was crying.

She held a gun to her own head.

A timer appeared beside her.

Five minutes.

The old man's voice returned.

"Bring me Elena."

Adrian stepped toward the screen.

"What happens if we don't?"

"Vanessa dies."

Olivia shook her head.

"It's a trap."

Adrian knew.

But he also knew one thing.

Vanessa had saved Emma by surrendering her.

May you like

Maybe.

Or maybe that was exactly what the old man wanted them to believe.
