Chapter 1 - Elena Hart could still feel the baby's weight against her shoulder. It was a strange thing to remember in the middle of chaos.

Not the stroller crashing down the marble stairs.
Not Vanessa Hart's scream.
Not Adrian Vale's hand striking her face.
The weight.
The tiny body of Emma pressing into her chest as Elena twisted sideways and took the impact meant for the child.
Now Elena stood in the foyer with one arm hanging uselessly at her side.
Emma was crying in Maya's arms.
Olivia was holding the television remote so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
Vanessa was near the front door.
And upstairs, a door had just opened.
Nobody moved.
Adrian's eyes remained fixed on the dark doorway of his private study.
"Nobody leaves this house," he repeated.
His voice had changed.
It wasn't the voice of the man who had struck Elena.
It was the voice of a man who had suddenly realized that the danger inside his home might be greater than the danger outside it.
A soft click came from somewhere above.
Then another.
The study door opened another inch.
Elena swallowed.
"Adrian."
He raised one hand.
She stopped.
Maya pulled Emma closer.
Olivia whispered, "Dad..."
The hallway remained empty.
Then a shadow crossed the crack beneath the study door.
Someone was standing inside.
Adrian reached for his phone.
No signal.
He frowned.
"That makes no sense."
Maya checked hers.
"Mine is dead too."
Olivia looked toward the security panel on the wall.
Its screen was black.
"The entire house system is offline."
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
It was a nervous, brittle sound.
"You're all acting insane."
Adrian turned toward her.
"Where were you standing when the stroller moved?"
"I told you. Near the landing."
"Show me."
Vanessa hesitated.
That tiny hesitation changed the room.
Elena watched Adrian's face.
He saw it too.
"Show me."
Vanessa took one step backward.
Olivia moved closer to the television.
"Dad, look at the study camera."
The screen had gone black.
Then it flickered.
For less than a second, an image appeared.
A narrow view of Adrian's study.
A desk.
A locked cabinet.
A chair.
And a man standing behind it.
The image vanished.
Olivia gasped.
"That wasn't Vanessa."
Adrian grabbed the remote.
"Replay it."
"I can't."
"What?"
"The system deleted the feed."
Maya stared at Olivia.
"You copied the stair footage?"
"Before I showed anyone."
"How?"
Olivia pointed at a tiny flash drive plugged into the television.
"I downloaded the cameras every Sunday."
Adrian's expression tightened.
"Why?"
Olivia looked at Vanessa.
"Because she kept telling me I imagined things."
Silence.
Vanessa's lips parted.
"What things?"
Olivia's voice trembled.
"Footsteps."
Adrian looked at his daughter.
"What footsteps?"
"At night. Outside Dad's study."
Elena felt cold despite the warmth of the foyer.
"Olivia," Adrian said quietly, "what did you see?"
"I never saw him."
"Him?"
"I heard him."
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the door.
Maya blocked her.
"You're not going anywhere."
Vanessa glared.
"Move."
"No."
Adrian stepped between them.
"Vanessa, you stay."
"I have done nothing."
Olivia's eyes filled with tears.
"You pushed Emma."
Vanessa looked at her.
"I did not."
"You did."
"I didn't."
"You let go of the stroller."
Vanessa shook her head wildly.
"The video was edited."
Olivia said nothing.
Instead, she held up the flash drive.
"I saved the original."
Vanessa went pale.
Adrian stared at the drive.
"Where is the original file?"
Olivia hesitated.
"On another device."
"Where?"
"My room."
A sound came from upstairs.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone looked up.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The study door had opened completely.
The hallway beyond it was empty.
Then the lights went out.
Emma screamed.
Maya shouted.
Adrian reached through the darkness.
"Elena!"
Something hit the floor upstairs.
A metallic object.
Then came the sound of footsteps.
Running.
Adrian's phone suddenly vibrated.
The signal had returned.
A single message appeared on the screen.
No number.
No name.
Just six words.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT HER ALONE.
Adrian stared at it.
Elena saw the blood drain from his face.
"Who sent that?"
He didn't answer.
Because beneath the message was another line.
ASK HER WHAT HAPPENED TEN YEARS AGO.
Adrian slowly turned toward Vanessa.
For the first time that night, Vanessa looked genuinely terrified.
And Elena realized something.
May you like
Vanessa wasn't afraid of the police.
She was afraid of what Adrian might remember.
