Chapter 14 - Maya's gun was pointed at the floor. Not at Elena.

Not at Adrian.

But the implication was enough.

Everyone stopped.

Adrian stood slowly.

"Put it down."

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She shook her head.

"I was sent here."

"By who?"

"Daniel's mother."

Eleanor.

Adrian looked at his mother.

She closed her eyes.

Maya continued.

"I was assigned to watch Elena."

Elena stared.

"Why?"

"Because your mother asked me."

Adrian looked confused.

"Your mother knew Elena survived."

Maya lowered the gun.

"She knew the child-trafficking network was still active."

"So you manipulated us?"

"I protected you."

"By spying on us?"

"I had no choice."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who was Noah?"

Maya looked at him.

"I don't know."

Olivia suddenly spoke.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

Olivia held up a recorder.

"I found it in the theater."

She pressed play.

A man's voice filled the room.

Noah.

"You think you're chasing me."

A pause.

"I'm the one who's been chasing them."

Elena felt cold.

"That's my father's voice."

Adrian stared.

The recording continued.

"The archive was never meant to be destroyed."

"We were supposed to recover it."

"Every name."

"Every payment."

"Every child."

"Noah was the code name."

Elena looked at Adrian.

"Your father."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"So he built the entire system."

"No," Maya said.

"He inherited it."

Silence.

Maya pointed toward Eleanor.

"She tried to destroy it."

Eleanor struggled to sit up.

"Too late."

Adrian knelt beside her.

"Where is he?"

She whispered:

"Home."

Elena's stomach dropped.

"The Vale house?"

Eleanor nodded.

"He's waiting."

They returned before sunrise.

The estate looked normal.

Too normal.

The front doors were open.

No guards.

No police.

No cameras.

They entered the foyer.

The television switched on by itself.

The old man appeared.

"You finally came home."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Release everyone."

The old man smiled.

"Everyone?"

A screen split into four feeds.

Vanessa.

Claire.

Olivia.

Elena's mother.

All alive.

All in different rooms.

Adrian's father continued.

"Choose one."

Adrian stared.

"No."

"You know how this works."

Daniel stepped forward.

"This ends tonight."

The old man laughed.

"You've never understood."

"Then explain."

"You think children were the product."

Daniel looked confused.

"What?"

"The children were leverage."

"Leverage for what?"

The old man opened a file.

"Politicians."

"Corporations."

"Judges."

"Doctors."

"Every powerful person who needed a secret buried."

Elena understood.

"The children were evidence."

"Exactly."

He looked at her.

"And you were the first witness."

Adrian's hands trembled.

"What happened to Elena's mother?"

The old man smiled.

"She copied the archive."

Adrian froze.

"And then?"

"I took it back."

"You killed her?"

"No."

He looked toward the screen showing Elena's mother.

"I kept her."

Elena stepped forward.

"Why?"

"Because she was useful."

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

It contained a list of names.

At the bottom:

PROJECT VALE.

Then something else.

A final line.

DIRECTOR: OLIVIA VALE.

Olivia stared.

"What?"

Adrian turned.

"What does that mean?"

The old man smiled.

"She was born to inherit the operation."

"No."

"Her mother signed."

"No."

"Your daughter was never your daughter."

Adrian's face broke.

"Stop."

The old man leaned toward the camera.

"Ask Elena."

Everyone looked at her.

Elena's heart hammered.

"I don't know."

The old man smiled.

"You will."

The television shut off.

Every door in the house locked.

A timer began.

Ten minutes.

Maya looked at the system.

"It's a purge."

"What does that mean?"

"He's going to erase the archive."

Adrian grabbed her.

"Stop it."

"I can't."

Daniel looked around.

"Then we do what he fears."

"What?"

"Copy everything."

Elena looked at Olivia.

Olivia nodded.

They moved.

Drives connected.

Files transferred.

Records copied.

Every second mattered.

At six minutes, the lights went red.

At four minutes, the walls began opening.

At two minutes, footsteps approached from the upstairs hallway.

At one minute, the old man's voice returned.

"Elena."

She looked up.

"Come to the study."

The study door opened.

Inside stood a man.

Adrian's father.

Alive.

Holding Elena's mother beside him.

And behind them stood a second man.

Elena stared.

May you like

She knew that face.

It was her own.
