Chapter 8: Emily’s Last Letter

Chapter 8: Emily’s Last Letter
The wedding hall was no longer a place of celebration.
It had become a battlefield of secrets.
The guests slowly began leaving, whispering among themselves. The beautiful decorations remained untouched, but the dream they represented was gone.
Lucas didn’t care about the wedding anymore.
He cared about one thing.
The truth.
He stood near the entrance with Lily beside him, holding her hand tightly.
The little girl had stopped crying, but Lucas could still see the fear in her eyes.
Fear that she might lose him.
Fear that someone could take away the only family she had left.
Lucas knelt down.
“Lily.”
She looked at him.
“Yes, Daddy?”
“I need you to remember something.”
“What?”
He gently held her shoulders.
“No matter what anyone says, no matter what anyone tries to make you believe…”
He paused.
“You are my daughter.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Forever?”
Lucas smiled sadly.
“Forever.”
Lily hugged him.
And at that moment, Lucas made a promise to himself.
Nobody would ever make his daughter feel unwanted again.
Not Vanessa.
Not anyone.
An hour later, Lucas, Daniel, and Sarah arrived at Emily’s old house.
The house had remained untouched for years.
Lucas had avoided coming here.
Every room carried memories.
The living room where Emily used to read bedtime stories.
The kitchen where she danced while cooking.
The hallway where little Lily used to run with her tiny footsteps.
Lucas stood at the doorway.
His chest tightened.
He hadn’t realized how much he missed this place.
Sarah watched him quietly.
“She loved this house.”
Lucas nodded.
“She loved our family.”
Daniel looked away.
Guilt appeared on his face.
Lucas noticed.
“You still haven’t told me everything.”
Daniel remained silent.
Lucas stepped closer.
“Six years.”
His voice was controlled.
“You disappeared for six years.”
Daniel sighed.
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
Daniel looked at the old house.
“Of the truth.”
Lucas frowned.
“That’s not an answer.”
Daniel nodded.
“You’re right.”
He looked at him.
“I should have told you everything.”
“Then do it now.”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“The night Emily died…”
He stopped.
Lucas waited.
“I wasn’t just called by Emily.”
A pause.
“She called someone else.”
Lucas felt uneasy.
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Sarah.
Sarah lowered her eyes.
“Me.”
Lucas looked shocked.
“You were there?”
Sarah nodded.
“Not physically.”
She explained.
“Emily called me first.”
Her voice became emotional.
“She was scared.”
Lucas felt his heart hurt.
“What did she say?”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“She told me she had proof.”
“Proof of Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“She said Vanessa had been watching your family for months.”
Lucas clenched his jaw.
“What kind of proof?”
Sarah looked at Daniel.
Daniel opened a drawer in the old cabinet.
Inside was a small metal box.
Lucas stared.
“What is that?”
Daniel answered:
“The reason Vanessa never found the letter.”
He placed the box on the table.
The lock was old.
But still intact.
Lucas opened it.
Inside were several items.
Photographs.
A diary.
And an envelope.
His hands froze.
Because the envelope had his name written on it.
Lucas.
The handwriting.
Emily’s handwriting.
For a moment, he couldn’t breathe.
He touched the paper.
Six years.
Six years wondering if he would ever hear from her again.
And now…
Her final words were in his hands.
“Open it.”
Sarah whispered.
Lucas slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
His hands shook as he began reading.
My dear Lucas,
If you are reading this, then something happened that I was afraid of.
I hope I am wrong. I hope I worried for nothing.
But if I am gone, you need to protect Lily.
Lucas stopped.
His vision blurred.
He continued.
There is a woman named Vanessa.
She will seem kind. She will seem understanding. She will know exactly what to say.
Please don’t hate her because of this letter. Hate is not the answer.
But do not trust her blindly.
Lucas swallowed.
The words felt like Emily was speaking directly to him.
Vanessa doesn’t want what I have.
She wants to become what I am.
His hands tightened around the paper.
A wife. A mother. The center of your world.
But Lucas, love cannot be forced. A family cannot be stolen.
A tear fell onto the page.
Then came the sentence that made him freeze.
The most dangerous thing about Vanessa is not what she wants.
It is what she is willing to do to get it.
Lucas looked up.
Everyone was silent.
He continued reading.
I discovered something about Vanessa’s past.
Something she has spent years hiding.
She was connected to another family before ours.
Lucas looked at Daniel.
Another family.
The same thing Sarah had mentioned.
The letter continued.
A family that disappeared after Vanessa entered their lives.
Lucas felt cold.
I tried to find the truth.
But Vanessa discovered that I was investigating her.
If something happens to me, please do not believe it was random.
The room became silent.
Lucas stopped reading.
His breathing became heavier.
“Emily knew.”
Daniel nodded.
“She knew someone wanted to hurt her.”
Lucas looked back at the letter.
There was more.
The final paragraph.
He read slowly.
Lucas, I need you to promise me one thing.
Do not let Lily grow up believing she was the reason people left.
She is innocent.
She is our miracle.
Protect her.
Love her.
And tell her that her mother loved her more than anything in this world.
Lucas closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.
Then he folded the letter carefully.
Emily’s last words.
The last gift she left him.
But before he could put it away…
Something fell from inside the envelope.
A small photograph.
Lucas picked it up.
And his entire body froze.
Because the photograph showed Emily.
Standing beside Vanessa.
But this time…
There was another person in the picture.
A man.
Lucas recognized him immediately.
It was someone he had trusted.
Someone who had been at his wedding.
Someone who had helped Vanessa.
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“Who is this man?”
Daniel’s face turned pale.
Sarah stepped closer.
“Lucas…”
He looked at them.
“Tell me.”
Daniel whispered:
“That is Vanessa’s father.”
Lucas frowned.
“Her father?”
Daniel nodded.
“And he is the person who knows the real reason Emily died.”
Lucas stared at the photograph.
Then Sarah said something that made his blood run cold.
“Lucas…”
She pointed at the date written behind the picture.
“This photo was taken…”
She paused.
“The day after Emily’s funeral.”
Lucas froze.
Impossible.
Emily was dead.
Vanessa was pretending to mourn.
And yet…
She had met with her father.
After Emily died.
Lucas slowly turned toward the window.
Outside, the night was dark.
But somewhere out there…
The person who knew the truth was still alive.
And Lucas knew exactly what he had to do next.
Find Vanessa’s father.
May you like
Before Vanessa found a way to silence him.
To be continued…
