Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the White Dress The silence inside the wedding hall felt heavier than any sound. Only minutes earlier, everyone had been celebrating. Now, every eye was fixed on Vanessa. The bride who had walked in surrounded by flowers and applause was suddenly standing alone beneath the bright chandelier lights, holding onto a secret nobody understood. Lucas still held Lily tightly. His daughter’s small hands were wrapped around his arm, as if she was afraid that if she let go, Vanessa would somehow take him away. That feeling hurt him more than anything. Because children did not invent fear without a reason. “Lucas…” Vanessa finally spoke. Her voice was softer now. Different. The confident woman who always knew exactly what to say had disappeared. “I think you’re letting a child’s imagination destroy something beautiful.” Lucas looked at her. “A child’s imagination?” He repeated the words slowly. “Lily was locked inside a bathroom crying at my wedding.” Vanessa’s expression tightened. “I didn’t lock her there.” “Then who did?” The question landed like a stone. Vanessa looked away. Just for a moment. But Lucas saw it. And that was enough. “Vanessa.” His voice became colder. “I asked you a question.” She swallowed. “I don’t know.” A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks. “You don’t know?” Lucas asked. Vanessa nodded quickly. “She probably went there herself. Children wander around. Maybe she got scared and misunderstood something she heard.” Lucas stared at her. But Lily suddenly spoke. “No.” Everyone looked down at her. The little girl wiped her tears with her sleeve. “She didn’t sound confused.” Lucas crouched beside her. “What did you hear, sweetheart?” Lily looked at Vanessa. “She was talking to Aunt Clara.” A strange expression crossed Vanessa’s face. Only for a second. But Lucas noticed. “Clara?” Vanessa’s sister. The woman who was supposed to be helping with the wedding preparations. Lucas turned around. “Where is Clara?” Nobody answered. The wedding coordinator looked nervous. “She left about twenty minutes ago.” Lucas frowned. “Left?” “Yes. She said she had an emergency.” That was strange. Very strange. Because Clara had been excited about this wedding. She had been one of the biggest supporters of Vanessa and Lucas’s relationship. At least, that was what Lucas believed. Then Lily grabbed his hand. “Daddy…” “What is it?” “She said something else.” Lucas leaned closer. “What?” Lily whispered: “She said she finally found the papers.” The room became silent again. Papers. Lucas felt something uncomfortable in his chest. “What papers?” Lily shook her head. “I don’t know.” Vanessa suddenly stepped forward. “Lucas, this is ridiculous.” Her voice became sharper. “You’re seriously going to question me because of something a child overheard?” Lucas looked at her. “No.” He looked around the room. “I’m questioning you because your reaction is telling me there is something wrong.” Vanessa’s face changed. “You don’t trust me?” Lucas didn’t answer immediately. Because that was the question he had been asking himself for months. Did he really know Vanessa? At the beginning, she seemed perfect. She met Lily at a park when Lucas was picking her up from school. Lily had dropped her toy rabbit, and Vanessa had been the person who picked it up. She had smiled. She had knelt down. She had talked to Lily like she mattered. That moment convinced Lucas. He thought he had found someone who could bring warmth back into their home. But recently… Small things had changed. Vanessa stopped spending time with Lily. She complained whenever Lucas planned family activities. She started saying things like: “She needs to understand that adults need privacy.” Or: “You can’t let your daughter control every decision in our marriage.” At the time, Lucas thought she was simply adjusting. Now… Those memories felt different. Like pieces of a puzzle he had refused to put together. “Open the dress.” The words shocked everyone. Lucas’s mother looked at him. “Lucas, what are you saying?” He didn’t look away from Vanessa. “You heard Lily.” Vanessa immediately stepped back. “No.” The answer came too quickly. Too strongly. The room froze. Lucas noticed. “If there’s nothing wrong, why are you afraid?” Vanessa’s breathing became faster. “You cannot humiliate me like this.” “I’m not trying to humiliate you.” Lucas looked at Lily. “I’m trying to protect my daughter.” That sentence changed everything. Because everyone understood. This was no longer about a wedding. It was about a father choosing his child. Vanessa’s mother suddenly stood up. “Lucas, you’re making a terrible mistake.” Lucas looked at her. “Why?” She hesitated. “My daughter loves Lily.” But even she sounded uncertain. Lucas slowly walked closer. “Then prove it.” Vanessa’s eyes widened. “What?” “Show everyone there is nothing hidden.” The entire room waited. The photographer quietly lowered his camera. The guests stopped whispering. The bride stood in the center of the hall. Alone. Finally, Vanessa looked at Lucas with tears forming in her eyes. “You really think I would hurt your daughter?” Lucas said nothing. That silence was her answer. A tear rolled down Vanessa’s cheek. Then she whispered: “Fine.” Everyone watched as she reached toward the side of her wedding gown. For a moment, Lucas thought she was going to reveal whatever was hidden. But instead… She smiled. A strange, bitter smile. “You want the truth?” Lucas stared at her. “Yes.” Vanessa slowly touched a hidden zipper beneath the layers of fabric. “I wanted to tell you after the ceremony.” The guests gasped. Lucas’s heart started pounding. “Tell me what?” Vanessa looked around the room. Then she looked directly at Lily. And what she said next changed everything. “I was never planning to become her mother.” A cold silence filled the hall. Lucas felt Lily’s hand tighten around his. Vanessa continued: “I knew from the beginning that Lily would always come first.” Her voice became calmer. Almost emotionless. “And I knew I could never compete with that.” Lucas stared at her in disbelief. “Then why did you marry me?” Vanessa looked down at the dress. “Because I thought I could change your priorities.” The guests looked horrified. Lucas’s expression hardened. “What does that mean?” Vanessa slowly pulled the hidden zipper. Inside the wedding dress was a secret compartment. And inside that compartment… Was a stack of documents. Lucas’s face changed. Because he recognized the first page. It was a legal document. A custody agreement. His custody agreement. With Lily’s name written clearly across the top. The entire room erupted. Lucas reached forward and grabbed the papers. His hands trembled as he read. Then he looked at Vanessa. “What did you do?” Vanessa’s tears disappeared. The fear on her face was replaced by something colder. Determined. “I gave you a choice.” Lucas looked confused. “What choice?” Vanessa stepped closer. “Me…” She pointed at Lily. “Or her.” The words struck harder than any scream. Lucas stared at the woman standing in front of him. The woman he almost married. The woman who had hidden a legal document inside her wedding dress. And suddenly he understood. This wedding was never about love. It was a test. Vanessa had planned to force him into choosing. But she made one mistake. She underestimated a father’s love. Lucas slowly removed the wedding ring from his finger. The entire room watched. Vanessa’s face changed. “Lucas…” He placed the ring in his palm. Then he said the words nobody expected. “The wedding ended before I walked into this room.” He looked at Lily. “You already made my decision.” Then he turned back to Vanessa. “And now I want to know one thing.” His eyes moved to the hidden documents. “How long have you been planning to take my daughter away from me?” Vanessa said nothing. But the answer was already written on her face. And somewhere outside the wedding hall… A woman named Clara was watching everything unfold. Because she knew the truth. The documents inside Vanessa’s dress were only a small part of the plan. The real secret… Was hidden somewhere else. And when Lucas discovered who had helped Vanessa create that plan… The wedding disaster would become a family war. To be continued… / Chapter 5 / 14

Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted Emily’s Life

Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted Emily’s Life

The words echoed through the wedding hall.

“Since the day I met Emily.”

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stood beneath the crystal chandelier, still wearing the wedding dress that was supposed to symbolize a new beginning.

But now everyone saw it differently.

It was not a dress of love.

It was a costume worn by someone who had spent years hiding behind a perfect image.

Lucas stared at her.

His mind was filled with questions.

How?

Why?

How could someone enter his life with such a carefully designed plan?

He looked at the woman standing in front of him.

The woman who had cooked dinner for Lily.
The woman who had helped with school projects.
The woman who had hugged him when he was grieving.

Had any of those moments been real?

“Explain.”

Lucas’s voice was low.

Vanessa tilted her head.

“After everything, you still want an explanation?”

“Yes.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“I want to know why.”

Vanessa looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the families.

At the broken wedding decorations.

Then she laughed quietly.

“You all think I’m a monster.”

Nobody answered.

“Maybe I am.”

Her honesty shocked everyone.

“But none of you know what it feels like to spend your whole life watching someone else have everything you wanted.”

Lucas frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa looked at the photograph of Emily.

The one Daniel had placed on the table.

“Emily had everything.”

Her voice became softer.

“She was loved.”

Lucas said nothing.

“She had a husband who looked at her like she was the only person in the world.”

A strange sadness appeared on Vanessa’s face.

“She had a beautiful daughter.”

Her eyes moved toward where Lily was standing with Lucas’s mother.

“She had a perfect family.”

Lucas’s expression hardened.

“So you wanted mine?”

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

“You became obsessed with Emily.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I admired her.”

Lucas almost laughed.

“Admiration doesn’t involve destroying someone’s family.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“When I met Emily, she was everything I wasn’t.”

She walked slowly across the hall.

“She was kind without trying.”

“She was loved without demanding it.”

“She trusted people.”

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“And the world rewarded her.”

Lucas watched her carefully.

Because behind Vanessa’s anger was something deeper.

Something broken.

But broken did not mean harmless.

“What happened between you two?”

Vanessa stopped.

“Emily found out who I really was.”

Daniel immediately looked at Lucas.

“See?”

Vanessa ignored him.

“Before I met Emily, I had nothing.”

Lucas remained silent.

“No family that cared.”

“No one who believed in me.”

“So I learned something.”

Her eyes became colder.

“If people don’t give you a place in their world…”

“You take one.”

The room felt colder.

Lucas looked at her.

“And Emily stood in your way.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“She had everything I wanted.”

“No.”

Lucas shook his head.

“She had something you couldn’t steal.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“What?”

“Love.”

The word hit harder than Lucas expected.

Vanessa looked away.

For a moment, she looked almost hurt.

But then the mask returned.

“You think love is enough?”

Lucas didn’t answer.

Vanessa continued.

“Love disappears.”

She pointed toward Emily’s photograph.

“Emily had love.”

Her voice became bitter.

“And where did that get her?”

The room froze.

Lucas’s eyes turned cold.

“Don’t.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You know I’m right.”

“Don’t talk about her like that.”

“Why?”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Because you still love a dead woman?”

Nobody spoke.

Lucas clenched his fists.

The man who had remained calm throughout the entire disaster finally showed anger.

“You don’t get to say her name.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You never let her go.”

Lucas looked at Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.

“She is my daughter’s mother.”

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“And that’s exactly why I could never win.”

Lucas frowned.

“What?”

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“No matter what I did…”

She looked at him.

“No matter how much I tried…”

“She was always there.”

Lucas understood.

This was never just jealousy.

Vanessa wasn’t fighting Lily.

She was fighting a memory.

Emily’s memory.

And she hated that she could never defeat someone who was gone.

Then Daniel spoke.

“There’s something else Lucas needs to know.”

Vanessa immediately turned.

“No.”

Daniel ignored her.

“Emily didn’t just discover Vanessa’s plan.”

Lucas looked at him.

“What else?”

Daniel pulled out another document.

“This.”

Lucas took it.

It was a medical report.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?”

Daniel’s expression was serious.

“Emily found out Vanessa had been lying about something important.”

Lucas looked confused.

“About what?”

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

“Her past.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Daniel continued.

“Vanessa told everyone she grew up alone.”

He placed another document on the table.

“But that wasn’t true.”

Lucas read the paper.

His eyes widened.

Because it showed a family record.

A name.

A connection.

Something impossible.

“Vanessa…”

He looked up.

“You had a daughter?”

The entire room gasped.

Vanessa became completely still.

For the first time all night…

She looked genuinely shocked.

Because that secret was never supposed to be discovered.

Lucas looked back at the document.

A child’s name was written clearly.

A girl.

Age eight.

Vanessa’s daughter.

But beside the name was a word that made Lucas’s heart stop.

Deceased.

Lucas slowly looked at Vanessa.

“You lost a child?”

A tear appeared in her eyes.

The first real tear anyone had seen from her.

But Daniel’s expression remained serious.

“Lucas…”

He paused.

“You need to understand something.”

Lucas looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel answered:

“Vanessa didn’t see Lily as a child.”

A silence followed.

“She saw Lily as a replacement.”

Lucas felt a chill.

Daniel continued.

“After losing her own daughter, Vanessa became obsessed with the idea of having another family.”

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

“And she chose mine.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Vanessa finally broke.

“Stop!”

Her voice filled the hall.

Everyone turned.

She was crying now.

Not pretending.

Not acting.

Real tears.

“You don’t know what I went through.”

Lucas looked at her.

“You’re right.”

His voice was quiet.

“I don’t.”

Vanessa looked at him desperately.

“I lost my little girl.”

Lucas said nothing.

“I know what it feels like to hold a child and then lose them forever.”

Her voice cracked.

“I saw Lily and…”

She stopped.

Lucas waited.

“And I thought maybe…”

She whispered:

“Maybe if I became her mother, I could fix what I lost.”

The room went silent.

For one second…

Lucas almost felt sympathy.

Almost.

Then he remembered Lily crying in the bathroom.

He remembered the custody papers.

The recordings.

The plan.

Pain could explain someone’s actions.

But it could not excuse everything.

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

“You lost a child.”

She lowered her head.

“But you tried to take mine.”

Vanessa had no answer.

Then suddenly…

A loud sound came from outside.

Car doors.

Many of them.

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

A group of people in dark suits entered the wedding hall.

Leading them was a woman Lucas had never seen before.

She walked directly toward Vanessa.

And when Vanessa saw her…

Her face lost all color.

“No…”

The woman stopped.

“You thought you could hide forever?”

Lucas looked confused.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at him.

Then at Vanessa.

“My name is Sarah.”

She pulled out a folder.

“And I’m here to reveal what Vanessa did before she ever met you.”

She placed the folder on the table.

Then said:

“The truth about her first family.”

Lucas opened the folder.

The first page made his hands freeze.

Because it contained a photograph.

A photograph of Vanessa…

Standing beside Emily…

May you like

On the night Emily died.

To be continued…
