Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the White Dress The silence inside the wedding hall felt heavier than any sound. Only minutes earlier, everyone had been celebrating. Now, every eye was fixed on Vanessa. The bride who had walked in surrounded by flowers and applause was suddenly standing alone beneath the bright chandelier lights, holding onto a secret nobody understood. Lucas still held Lily tightly. His daughter’s small hands were wrapped around his arm, as if she was afraid that if she let go, Vanessa would somehow take him away. That feeling hurt him more than anything. Because children did not invent fear without a reason. “Lucas…” Vanessa finally spoke. Her voice was softer now. Different. The confident woman who always knew exactly what to say had disappeared. “I think you’re letting a child’s imagination destroy something beautiful.” Lucas looked at her. “A child’s imagination?” He repeated the words slowly. “Lily was locked inside a bathroom crying at my wedding.” Vanessa’s expression tightened. “I didn’t lock her there.” “Then who did?” The question landed like a stone. Vanessa looked away. Just for a moment. But Lucas saw it. And that was enough. “Vanessa.” His voice became colder. “I asked you a question.” She swallowed. “I don’t know.” A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks. “You don’t know?” Lucas asked. Vanessa nodded quickly. “She probably went there herself. Children wander around. Maybe she got scared and misunderstood something she heard.” Lucas stared at her. But Lily suddenly spoke. “No.” Everyone looked down at her. The little girl wiped her tears with her sleeve. “She didn’t sound confused.” Lucas crouched beside her. “What did you hear, sweetheart?” Lily looked at Vanessa. “She was talking to Aunt Clara.” A strange expression crossed Vanessa’s face. Only for a second. But Lucas noticed. “Clara?” Vanessa’s sister. The woman who was supposed to be helping with the wedding preparations. Lucas turned around. “Where is Clara?” Nobody answered. The wedding coordinator looked nervous. “She left about twenty minutes ago.” Lucas frowned. “Left?” “Yes. She said she had an emergency.” That was strange. Very strange. Because Clara had been excited about this wedding. She had been one of the biggest supporters of Vanessa and Lucas’s relationship. At least, that was what Lucas believed. Then Lily grabbed his hand. “Daddy…” “What is it?” “She said something else.” Lucas leaned closer. “What?” Lily whispered: “She said she finally found the papers.” The room became silent again. Papers. Lucas felt something uncomfortable in his chest. “What papers?” Lily shook her head. “I don’t know.” Vanessa suddenly stepped forward. “Lucas, this is ridiculous.” Her voice became sharper. “You’re seriously going to question me because of something a child overheard?” Lucas looked at her. “No.” He looked around the room. “I’m questioning you because your reaction is telling me there is something wrong.” Vanessa’s face changed. “You don’t trust me?” Lucas didn’t answer immediately. Because that was the question he had been asking himself for months. Did he really know Vanessa? At the beginning, she seemed perfect. She met Lily at a park when Lucas was picking her up from school. Lily had dropped her toy rabbit, and Vanessa had been the person who picked it up. She had smiled. She had knelt down. She had talked to Lily like she mattered. That moment convinced Lucas. He thought he had found someone who could bring warmth back into their home. But recently… Small things had changed. Vanessa stopped spending time with Lily. She complained whenever Lucas planned family activities. She started saying things like: “She needs to understand that adults need privacy.” Or: “You can’t let your daughter control every decision in our marriage.” At the time, Lucas thought she was simply adjusting. Now… Those memories felt different. Like pieces of a puzzle he had refused to put together. “Open the dress.” The words shocked everyone. Lucas’s mother looked at him. “Lucas, what are you saying?” He didn’t look away from Vanessa. “You heard Lily.” Vanessa immediately stepped back. “No.” The answer came too quickly. Too strongly. The room froze. Lucas noticed. “If there’s nothing wrong, why are you afraid?” Vanessa’s breathing became faster. “You cannot humiliate me like this.” “I’m not trying to humiliate you.” Lucas looked at Lily. “I’m trying to protect my daughter.” That sentence changed everything. Because everyone understood. This was no longer about a wedding. It was about a father choosing his child. Vanessa’s mother suddenly stood up. “Lucas, you’re making a terrible mistake.” Lucas looked at her. “Why?” She hesitated. “My daughter loves Lily.” But even she sounded uncertain. Lucas slowly walked closer. “Then prove it.” Vanessa’s eyes widened. “What?” “Show everyone there is nothing hidden.” The entire room waited. The photographer quietly lowered his camera. The guests stopped whispering. The bride stood in the center of the hall. Alone. Finally, Vanessa looked at Lucas with tears forming in her eyes. “You really think I would hurt your daughter?” Lucas said nothing. That silence was her answer. A tear rolled down Vanessa’s cheek. Then she whispered: “Fine.” Everyone watched as she reached toward the side of her wedding gown. For a moment, Lucas thought she was going to reveal whatever was hidden. But instead… She smiled. A strange, bitter smile. “You want the truth?” Lucas stared at her. “Yes.” Vanessa slowly touched a hidden zipper beneath the layers of fabric. “I wanted to tell you after the ceremony.” The guests gasped. Lucas’s heart started pounding. “Tell me what?” Vanessa looked around the room. Then she looked directly at Lily. And what she said next changed everything. “I was never planning to become her mother.” A cold silence filled the hall. Lucas felt Lily’s hand tighten around his. Vanessa continued: “I knew from the beginning that Lily would always come first.” Her voice became calmer. Almost emotionless. “And I knew I could never compete with that.” Lucas stared at her in disbelief. “Then why did you marry me?” Vanessa looked down at the dress. “Because I thought I could change your priorities.” The guests looked horrified. Lucas’s expression hardened. “What does that mean?” Vanessa slowly pulled the hidden zipper. Inside the wedding dress was a secret compartment. And inside that compartment… Was a stack of documents. Lucas’s face changed. Because he recognized the first page. It was a legal document. A custody agreement. His custody agreement. With Lily’s name written clearly across the top. The entire room erupted. Lucas reached forward and grabbed the papers. His hands trembled as he read. Then he looked at Vanessa. “What did you do?” Vanessa’s tears disappeared. The fear on her face was replaced by something colder. Determined. “I gave you a choice.” Lucas looked confused. “What choice?” Vanessa stepped closer. “Me…” She pointed at Lily. “Or her.” The words struck harder than any scream. Lucas stared at the woman standing in front of him. The woman he almost married. The woman who had hidden a legal document inside her wedding dress. And suddenly he understood. This wedding was never about love. It was a test. Vanessa had planned to force him into choosing. But she made one mistake. She underestimated a father’s love. Lucas slowly removed the wedding ring from his finger. The entire room watched. Vanessa’s face changed. “Lucas…” He placed the ring in his palm. Then he said the words nobody expected. “The wedding ended before I walked into this room.” He looked at Lily. “You already made my decision.” Then he turned back to Vanessa. “And now I want to know one thing.” His eyes moved to the hidden documents. “How long have you been planning to take my daughter away from me?” Vanessa said nothing. But the answer was already written on her face. And somewhere outside the wedding hall… A woman named Clara was watching everything unfold. Because she knew the truth. The documents inside Vanessa’s dress were only a small part of the plan. The real secret… Was hidden somewhere else. And when Lucas discovered who had helped Vanessa create that plan… The wedding disaster would become a family war. To be continued… / Chapter 12 / 14

Chapter 13: The Father Who Came Back

Chapter 13: The Father Who Came Back

The drawing remained on the table.

A simple piece of paper.

A child’s imagination.

At least, that was what Lucas wanted to believe.

But after everything he had discovered…

He no longer believed in coincidences.

Not anymore.

He looked at the figure Lily had drawn.

A tall man.

Dark hair.

A face without many details.

But one thing stood out.

A small mark near the eye.

Lucas stared.

“Lily…”

She looked up.

“Yes, Daddy?”

“Have you seen this person before?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

Lily thought carefully.

Then nodded.

“I don’t know him.”

Lucas relaxed slightly.

“Then why did you draw him?”

The little girl looked confused.

“Because he was there.”

Lucas felt a chill.

“Where?”

“In my dream.”

He forced himself to stay calm.

“Tell me about it.”

Lily looked at the drawing.

“He was standing far away.”

“Was he scary?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then what did he say?”

Lily lowered her voice.

“He said he missed me.”

Lucas froze.

Missed me.

Those words were not something a child would randomly create.

Not after everything.

Lucas gently took the drawing.

“Lily, has anyone talked to you about a man?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Has anyone shown you pictures?”

“No.”

Lucas looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

Lily nodded.

Then she asked:

“Daddy…”

“Yes?”

“Do I have another family?”

The question broke him.

Because it wasn’t a question a six-year-old should ever have to ask.

Lucas pulled her close.

“No.”

“But everyone keeps talking about secrets.”

He closed his eyes.

She had heard too much.

Too many adult problems had entered her small world.

“Listen to me.”

Lucas held her face gently.

“Family is not just about where someone comes from.”

“Then what is it?”

“It’s who stays.”

Lily listened.

“Who protects you.”

He smiled softly.

“Who loves you every single day.”

She nodded.

“And you stayed.”

Lucas’s eyes became emotional.

“Yes.”

“Then you’re my family.”

Lucas hugged her.

“Yes, baby.”

The next day, Lucas met Daniel and Sarah again.

This time, he had one goal.

Find Alexander Reed.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because he needed to know the truth.

“Alexander Reed.”

Sarah placed a file on the table.

“He disappeared six years ago.”

Lucas looked through the documents.

“After Emily died?”

“Yes.”

“Convenient.”

Daniel nodded.

“Very.”

Lucas looked at him.

“Do you know him?”

Daniel became silent.

That silence immediately caught Lucas’s attention.

“You do.”

Daniel sighed.

“Yes.”

Lucas’s expression hardened.

“Another secret?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I met Alexander before.”

“When?”

“Before Emily died.”

Lucas stared.

“Why?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because Emily asked me to.”

Lucas frowned.

“She asked you to meet him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“She wanted to know if he was still dangerous.”

Lucas leaned forward.

“And?”

Daniel’s face became serious.

“He was.”

Six years earlier.

Before Emily died.

Daniel had found Alexander.

A man with a charming smile.

A powerful presence.

Someone who could convince people he cared.

But underneath that image was something darker.

Alexander had a history.

Manipulation.

Threats.

Control.

Emily had discovered that Alexander had been searching for Lily.

Not because he wanted to be a father.

Because Lily represented something valuable.

A connection to the Vale family.

A hidden inheritance.

Lucas looked up.

“Inheritance?”

Daniel nodded.

“Alexander’s mother left behind a fortune.”

“And Lily?”

“She was the only person who could legally claim part of it.”

Lucas understood.

Money.

Again.

Everything returned to money.

Vanessa.

Mark.

Richard.

Alexander.

All of them.

Lily had become a target because of something she didn’t even know existed.

“How much?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Enough that people would destroy lives for it.”

Lucas felt anger.

“My daughter was never supposed to know about this.”

“No.”

Daniel agreed.

“Emily wanted to keep it that way.”

Lucas looked at the files.

“But someone found out.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked at Sarah.

Sarah answered:

“Vanessa.”

Lucas clenched his fist.

“She knew about Lily’s inheritance.”

“Yes.”

“And that’s why she wanted custody.”

Sarah nodded.

“She didn’t just want your family.”

“She wanted control.”

That evening, Lucas received an unexpected visitor.

The doorbell rang.

When he opened the door…

He froze.

A man stood outside.

Tall.

Dark hair.

A scar near his eye.

Exactly like Lily’s drawing.

Lucas’s heart stopped.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

His expression was calm.

Almost familiar.

“My name is Alexander Reed.”

Lucas immediately stepped back.

Every instinct told him to protect Lily.

“You need to leave.”

Alexander looked past him.

At the house.

At the place where Lily lived.

“She’s here.”

Lucas’s voice became dangerous.

“Don’t say her name.”

Alexander looked at him.

“You think I’m here to hurt her.”

“Are you?”

Alexander was silent.

Then he said:

“I came because I lost six years with my daughter.”

The words struck like lightning.

Lucas felt anger explode.

“She is not a possession.”

Alexander nodded.

“You’re right.”

He looked down.

“She is a person.”

For a moment, Lucas saw something unexpected.

Regret.

But he didn’t trust it.

“You don’t get to appear after six years and call yourself her father.”

Alexander looked at him.

“You’re right.”

Another pause.

“But I need to tell you something.”

Lucas remained silent.

Alexander reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after Emily died.”

Lucas stared.

“What is it?”

“A letter.”

“From Emily?”

Alexander nodded.

Lucas froze.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

Alexander looked away.

“Because I was afraid.”

Lucas almost laughed.

“Everyone is afraid.”

Alexander looked directly at him.

“You should be too.”

Lucas narrowed his eyes.

“Why?”

Alexander handed him the envelope.

“Because Emily wasn’t only protecting Lily from me.”

A pause.

“She was protecting Lily from someone who is still alive.”

Lucas opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Only one sentence was written.

And when Lucas read it…

His face changed.

“Lucas, if Alexander ever returns, it means the person who betrayed us is still close.”

Lucas looked up.

Alexander was watching him.

“Who?”

Alexander whispered:

“The person Emily trusted most.”

Lucas felt cold.

Because he already knew the answer.

There was only one person Emily had trusted completely.

The same person who had been beside Lucas for years.

The same person who helped arrange his marriage to Vanessa.

Mark.

But Mark was already exposed.

Unless…

Unless Mark had never been the true mastermind.

Lucas looked at Alexander.

“Tell me everything.”

Alexander nodded.

“Then you need to know what happened the night Emily died.”

And for the first time…

May you like

Lucas was about to hear the truth from someone who was actually there.

To be continued…
