Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the White Dress The silence inside the wedding hall felt heavier than any sound. Only minutes earlier, everyone had been celebrating. Now, every eye was fixed on Vanessa. The bride who had walked in surrounded by flowers and applause was suddenly standing alone beneath the bright chandelier lights, holding onto a secret nobody understood. Lucas still held Lily tightly. His daughter’s small hands were wrapped around his arm, as if she was afraid that if she let go, Vanessa would somehow take him away. That feeling hurt him more than anything. Because children did not invent fear without a reason. “Lucas…” Vanessa finally spoke. Her voice was softer now. Different. The confident woman who always knew exactly what to say had disappeared. “I think you’re letting a child’s imagination destroy something beautiful.” Lucas looked at her. “A child’s imagination?” He repeated the words slowly. “Lily was locked inside a bathroom crying at my wedding.” Vanessa’s expression tightened. “I didn’t lock her there.” “Then who did?” The question landed like a stone. Vanessa looked away. Just for a moment. But Lucas saw it. And that was enough. “Vanessa.” His voice became colder. “I asked you a question.” She swallowed. “I don’t know.” A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks. “You don’t know?” Lucas asked. Vanessa nodded quickly. “She probably went there herself. Children wander around. Maybe she got scared and misunderstood something she heard.” Lucas stared at her. But Lily suddenly spoke. “No.” Everyone looked down at her. The little girl wiped her tears with her sleeve. “She didn’t sound confused.” Lucas crouched beside her. “What did you hear, sweetheart?” Lily looked at Vanessa. “She was talking to Aunt Clara.” A strange expression crossed Vanessa’s face. Only for a second. But Lucas noticed. “Clara?” Vanessa’s sister. The woman who was supposed to be helping with the wedding preparations. Lucas turned around. “Where is Clara?” Nobody answered. The wedding coordinator looked nervous. “She left about twenty minutes ago.” Lucas frowned. “Left?” “Yes. She said she had an emergency.” That was strange. Very strange. Because Clara had been excited about this wedding. She had been one of the biggest supporters of Vanessa and Lucas’s relationship. At least, that was what Lucas believed. Then Lily grabbed his hand. “Daddy…” “What is it?” “She said something else.” Lucas leaned closer. “What?” Lily whispered: “She said she finally found the papers.” The room became silent again. Papers. Lucas felt something uncomfortable in his chest. “What papers?” Lily shook her head. “I don’t know.” Vanessa suddenly stepped forward. “Lucas, this is ridiculous.” Her voice became sharper. “You’re seriously going to question me because of something a child overheard?” Lucas looked at her. “No.” He looked around the room. “I’m questioning you because your reaction is telling me there is something wrong.” Vanessa’s face changed. “You don’t trust me?” Lucas didn’t answer immediately. Because that was the question he had been asking himself for months. Did he really know Vanessa? At the beginning, she seemed perfect. She met Lily at a park when Lucas was picking her up from school. Lily had dropped her toy rabbit, and Vanessa had been the person who picked it up. She had smiled. She had knelt down. She had talked to Lily like she mattered. That moment convinced Lucas. He thought he had found someone who could bring warmth back into their home. But recently… Small things had changed. Vanessa stopped spending time with Lily. She complained whenever Lucas planned family activities. She started saying things like: “She needs to understand that adults need privacy.” Or: “You can’t let your daughter control every decision in our marriage.” At the time, Lucas thought she was simply adjusting. Now… Those memories felt different. Like pieces of a puzzle he had refused to put together. “Open the dress.” The words shocked everyone. Lucas’s mother looked at him. “Lucas, what are you saying?” He didn’t look away from Vanessa. “You heard Lily.” Vanessa immediately stepped back. “No.” The answer came too quickly. Too strongly. The room froze. Lucas noticed. “If there’s nothing wrong, why are you afraid?” Vanessa’s breathing became faster. “You cannot humiliate me like this.” “I’m not trying to humiliate you.” Lucas looked at Lily. “I’m trying to protect my daughter.” That sentence changed everything. Because everyone understood. This was no longer about a wedding. It was about a father choosing his child. Vanessa’s mother suddenly stood up. “Lucas, you’re making a terrible mistake.” Lucas looked at her. “Why?” She hesitated. “My daughter loves Lily.” But even she sounded uncertain. Lucas slowly walked closer. “Then prove it.” Vanessa’s eyes widened. “What?” “Show everyone there is nothing hidden.” The entire room waited. The photographer quietly lowered his camera. The guests stopped whispering. The bride stood in the center of the hall. Alone. Finally, Vanessa looked at Lucas with tears forming in her eyes. “You really think I would hurt your daughter?” Lucas said nothing. That silence was her answer. A tear rolled down Vanessa’s cheek. Then she whispered: “Fine.” Everyone watched as she reached toward the side of her wedding gown. For a moment, Lucas thought she was going to reveal whatever was hidden. But instead… She smiled. A strange, bitter smile. “You want the truth?” Lucas stared at her. “Yes.” Vanessa slowly touched a hidden zipper beneath the layers of fabric. “I wanted to tell you after the ceremony.” The guests gasped. Lucas’s heart started pounding. “Tell me what?” Vanessa looked around the room. Then she looked directly at Lily. And what she said next changed everything. “I was never planning to become her mother.” A cold silence filled the hall. Lucas felt Lily’s hand tighten around his. Vanessa continued: “I knew from the beginning that Lily would always come first.” Her voice became calmer. Almost emotionless. “And I knew I could never compete with that.” Lucas stared at her in disbelief. “Then why did you marry me?” Vanessa looked down at the dress. “Because I thought I could change your priorities.” The guests looked horrified. Lucas’s expression hardened. “What does that mean?” Vanessa slowly pulled the hidden zipper. Inside the wedding dress was a secret compartment. And inside that compartment… Was a stack of documents. Lucas’s face changed. Because he recognized the first page. It was a legal document. A custody agreement. His custody agreement. With Lily’s name written clearly across the top. The entire room erupted. Lucas reached forward and grabbed the papers. His hands trembled as he read. Then he looked at Vanessa. “What did you do?” Vanessa’s tears disappeared. The fear on her face was replaced by something colder. Determined. “I gave you a choice.” Lucas looked confused. “What choice?” Vanessa stepped closer. “Me…” She pointed at Lily. “Or her.” The words struck harder than any scream. Lucas stared at the woman standing in front of him. The woman he almost married. The woman who had hidden a legal document inside her wedding dress. And suddenly he understood. This wedding was never about love. It was a test. Vanessa had planned to force him into choosing. But she made one mistake. She underestimated a father’s love. Lucas slowly removed the wedding ring from his finger. The entire room watched. Vanessa’s face changed. “Lucas…” He placed the ring in his palm. Then he said the words nobody expected. “The wedding ended before I walked into this room.” He looked at Lily. “You already made my decision.” Then he turned back to Vanessa. “And now I want to know one thing.” His eyes moved to the hidden documents. “How long have you been planning to take my daughter away from me?” Vanessa said nothing. But the answer was already written on her face. And somewhere outside the wedding hall… A woman named Clara was watching everything unfold. Because she knew the truth. The documents inside Vanessa’s dress were only a small part of the plan. The real secret… Was hidden somewhere else. And when Lucas discovered who had helped Vanessa create that plan… The wedding disaster would become a family war. To be continued… / Chapter 4 / 14

Chapter 5: The Truth About Emily

Chapter 5: The Truth About Emily

The message on Lucas’s phone burned into his mind.

“Lucas, don’t trust Daniel. He is the reason Emily died.”

For several seconds, he couldn’t move.

The wedding hall around him disappeared.

The guests.
The decorations.
The ruined ceremony.

Everything became a blur.

There was only one thought.

Emily.

His first wife.

Lily’s mother.

The woman whose smile had once filled their home with warmth.

The woman who had trusted him with their daughter before she took her last breath.

Lucas slowly lifted his eyes toward Daniel.

The man standing in front of him suddenly looked different.

A moment ago, Daniel was the person who brought answers.

Now…

He looked like another mystery.

“Who sent this?”

Daniel noticed Lucas’s expression.

“What happened?”

Lucas turned the phone screen toward him.

Daniel read the message.

The color drained from his face.

Lucas saw it.

The reaction.

The fear.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Daniel.”

His voice was quiet.

“Is it true?”

The room became silent again.

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at Lucas.

“I knew this day would come.”

Those words made Lucas’s stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel sighed.

“It means there are things you were never told.”

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

A small, bitter laugh.

“Interesting.”

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“The man who disappeared for six years suddenly returns and wants everyone to believe he’s the hero?”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.”

Vanessa smiled.

“And you do?”

Lucas looked between them.

“Enough.”

His voice stopped them both.

“I’m done being the person everyone manipulates.”

He held up the phone.

“I want answers.”

Nobody spoke.

Lucas pointed at Daniel.

“You first.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Ask.”

“Were you involved in Emily’s death?”

The question shocked everyone.

Lily looked up at her father.

Lucas immediately softened.

“Take Lily outside.”

His mother understood.

She gently guided Lily away from the crowd.

Only when his daughter was gone did Lucas continue.

“Answer me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“No.”

Lucas stared.

“No?”

“No, I did not cause Emily’s death.”

“Then why does someone think you did?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Six years ago, Emily discovered something about Vanessa.”

Lucas glanced at Vanessa.

“What?”

Daniel looked at the wedding dress still lying on the floor.

“Vanessa was not just interested in you.”

He paused.

“She was interested in Emily’s life.”

Lucas frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Daniel opened the folder again.

Inside was another photograph.

This time, Lucas recognized the location.

It was Emily’s workplace.

And Vanessa was standing outside.

“When was this taken?”

“Three months before Emily died.”

Lucas stared.

“Why was Vanessa following her?”

Daniel answered:

“Because Emily found out Vanessa had been using fake identities.”

Lucas’s eyes widened.

“Fake identities?”

Daniel nodded.

“She had different names. Different backgrounds. Different stories.”

Lucas felt a chill.

“Why would someone do that?”

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

“Because she needed a new beginning every time her old one became dangerous.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Stop lying.”

Daniel ignored her.

“Emily was going to expose her.”

Lucas remembered something.

A memory from years ago.

A conversation with Emily.

A week before the accident.

She had been nervous.

She had told him:

“Lucas, if anything happens to me, promise me you’ll protect Lily.”

At the time, he thought it was just a mother’s fear.

Now…

It felt different.

Lucas looked at Daniel.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because Emily asked me not to.”

Lucas froze.

“She knew?”

Daniel nodded.

“She knew she was in danger.”

The room became quiet.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because she was afraid you would do something reckless.”

Lucas looked away.

That sounded like Emily.

She always protected him from his own anger.

“But what happened that night?”

Daniel’s face became painful.

“The night Emily died…”

He stopped.

Lucas waited.

“Emily called me.”

The words hit him.

“You talked to her?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Daniel looked down.

“She told me Vanessa knew she had discovered the truth.”

Lucas felt his heartbeat increase.

“What truth?”

Daniel answered:

“That Vanessa wasn’t trying to become part of your family.”

A pause.

“She was trying to replace it.”

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

Her face was emotionless now.

Almost cold.

Daniel continued.

“Emily wanted me to meet her and take Lily away for a few days.”

Lucas frowned.

“Why?”

“Because she was scared.”

The room felt smaller.

“But I was too late.”

Lucas’s hands tightened.

“What happened?”

Daniel’s voice became heavier.

“I arrived after the accident.”

Silence.

Lucas stared.

“You were there?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

Daniel looked away.

“I found evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“Evidence that the accident might not have been an accident.”

Lucas felt like the ground disappeared.

“What?”

Everyone gasped.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Daniel continued.

“Emily’s car had been tampered with.”

Lucas stared.

“Who did it?”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

But before he could answer…

Vanessa spoke.

“You’re lying.”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You don’t have proof.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I do.”

Lucas immediately turned.

“Where?”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

“I kept it hidden because I was afraid.”

He pulled out an old envelope.

“It contains the original investigation files.”

Lucas grabbed it.

His hands shook.

Inside were reports.

Photos.

Mechanical records.

And one piece of paper.

A handwritten note.

Lucas recognized the handwriting instantly.

Emily’s handwriting.

His breathing stopped.

He opened it.

Only one sentence was written:

“Lucas, if you are reading this, it means I was right about Vanessa.”

The room went silent.

Lucas read the next line.

And his heart shattered.

“She is not trying to marry you because she loves you. She is trying to take my place.”

Lucas looked up.

Everyone was watching him.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

The guests.

But one person was missing.

Lily.

And suddenly, Lucas realized something terrifying.

If Emily had known Vanessa was dangerous…

Then why did Vanessa wait until now?

Why didn’t she act earlier?

Unless…

This wedding was not the beginning of her plan.

It was the final step.

Lucas slowly folded the letter.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Tell me one thing.”

She remained silent.

“How long have you been planning to destroy my family?”

For the first time…

Vanessa smiled.

Not the sweet smile everyone knew.

A different one.

A cold one.

“You really want the truth?”

Lucas stared at her.

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked toward the door where Lily had left.

Then she whispered:

“Since the day I met Emily.”

The entire hall froze.

Because everyone understood.

This was never about a wedding.

It was a war that had started years ago.

May you like

And Lucas had just discovered he had been fighting an enemy who was already inside his home.
