CHAPTER 10 THE SON OF THE ENEMY

CHAPTER 10
THE SON OF THE ENEMY
The words echoed inside the abandoned factory.
Your father discovered the truth about you.
Daniel stood completely still.
For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.
Not because he believed Thomas Reeves.
Because deep down, some part of him was terrified that he did.
His entire life had been built on foundations that were now cracking.
Richard Hale.
The man who raised him.
The man who taught him everything.
The man whose name Daniel carried.
Was not his biological father.
And now Thomas Reeves was telling him that his real father was connected to the very family that had spent decades trying to destroy the Hales.
Samuel Cross.
Brother of Victor Cross.
A name Daniel had heard before.
A name connected to old business wars.
A name his father refused to discuss.
A name that disappeared from every record.
“Tell me everything.”
Daniel’s voice was controlled.
But Thomas could see the anger beneath it.
Thomas looked down.
“I should have told someone years ago.”
“Years ago?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You knew?”
Thomas swallowed.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Since before you were born.”
The answer hit harder than expected.
Daniel looked at Alex.
His friend remained silent.
Watching.
Analyzing.
Because Alex knew something Daniel was slowly realizing.
Thomas was not just hiding information.
He was carrying guilt.
“You knew my mother?”
Thomas nodded.
“Evelyn and Samuel were close.”
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Close?”
Thomas looked away.
“They were in love.”
Silence.
The factory suddenly felt smaller.
“You’re saying my mother and Samuel Cross…”
“Yes.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Thomas looked at him sadly.
“She became pregnant.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Every answer created more questions.
“Then why did Richard marry her?”
Thomas sighed.
“Because Richard loved her.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“And he still stayed?”
“Yes.”
Thomas looked toward the broken window.
“That was the kind of man Richard Hale was.”
Daniel said nothing.
Because that sounded exactly like him.
Richard had always believed loyalty was a choice.
Not something decided by blood.
Thomas continued.
“But Richard also knew something else.”
“What?”
“Samuel was dangerous.”
Daniel frowned.
“He loved my mother.”
“That was the problem.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Samuel loved Evelyn more than he loved anything else.”
“That’s not a crime.”
“No.”
Thomas paused.
“But obsession is.”
The factory became silent.
Daniel listened as Thomas explained the past.
Twenty-eight years earlier, before Hale Industries became an empire, Richard Hale, Victor Cross, and Samuel Cross were all connected.
They were young.
Ambitious.
Hungry.
Three brilliant minds chasing the same dream.
Building something powerful.
But power changed people.
Samuel was different.
He believed success belonged only to those willing to take it.
He manipulated.
He threatened.
He crossed lines.
Richard eventually removed him from the company.
That decision created an enemy.
But the real conflict began when Samuel discovered Evelyn was pregnant.
With his child.
Daniel.
“Samuel wanted to take you.”
Thomas spoke quietly.
“He believed you belonged to him.”
Daniel felt sick.
“What did Richard do?”
“He protected you.”
Thomas looked at him.
“He changed the records. He gave you his name. He raised you.”
“Why?”
“Because Samuel was becoming dangerous.”
Daniel looked down.
“So Richard wasn’t hiding the truth to hurt me.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“He was hiding it because he knew Samuel would never stop searching for you.”
A cold feeling moved through Daniel.
“Then Victor…”
Thomas nodded.
“Victor knows.”
“About me?”
“Yes.”
“Does Michael know?”
Thomas hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Michael knew.
His best friend knew his biggest secret.
And still he betrayed him.
“Why?”
Thomas looked at him.
“Because Michael believes Richard Hale destroyed his family.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone has a reason.”
“Yes.”
Thomas looked at him.
“But reasons don’t erase choices.”
Those words stayed with Daniel.
Suddenly, Alex raised his hand.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at him.
He was staring at the entrance.
“What?”
Alex moved closer to the window.
“Someone followed us.”
Daniel immediately turned.
The factory was silent.
Too silent.
Then they heard it.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Approaching.
Thomas’s face changed.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You know who that is?”
Thomas whispered:
“Victor.”
The door opened.
But it wasn’t Victor Cross.
It was Michael.
Daniel stared.
“You.”
Michael entered alone.
No security.
No weapon.
Just a tired expression.
“I knew you would come here.”
Daniel’s anger returned.
“You followed me?”
Michael looked at Thomas.
“I needed answers too.”
Daniel laughed.
“After everything you did?”
Michael looked away.
For the first time, he seemed less like an enemy.
More like someone who had lost control of his own plan.
“You think I wanted this?”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You attacked my company.”
“I wanted revenge.”
“You worked with Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“You let my wife get hurt.”
Michael’s face changed.
“I didn’t tell Vanessa to attack her.”
“But you knew she was going.”
Silence.
That was enough.
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“You knew.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The confession was worse than any lie.
“Why?”
Michael looked at him.
“Because I believed if I destroyed everything connected to Richard Hale, I would finally be free.”
Daniel stared.
“You’re not.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“I became exactly what I hated.”
Before Daniel could respond, Thomas suddenly looked toward the entrance.
His face turned pale.
“Michael…”
“What?”
Thomas whispered:
“You brought him here.”
Everyone turned.
Michael frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Then the lights inside the factory shut off.
Again.
Darkness.
A familiar pattern.
A familiar fear.
Daniel immediately understood.
This was not an accident.
Someone had planned this.
A voice echoed through the factory.
“You people spent years searching for the truth.”
The voice was calm.
Controlled.
Victor Cross.
“Now you finally have it.”
The lights turned back on.
Victor stood above them on the metal walkway.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was someone Daniel never expected.
Someone who should have been protecting him.
Someone who had been crying beside him hours earlier.
Evelyn Hale.
Daniel stared.
“Mom?”
She looked at him.
Her face was filled with sadness.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Sadness.
Victor smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Daniel looked between them.
“What is this?”
Victor answered:
“The truth.”
He stepped forward.
“Your mother was never my enemy.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
Victor continued:
“She was the person who helped me bring down Richard Hale.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“No.”
His mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
He stepped back.
“Tell me he’s lying.”
Evelyn couldn’t.
And that silence destroyed him.
Victor looked satisfied.
“Your entire life was built on a lie.”
Daniel felt everything collapsing.
But then Evelyn whispered something Victor did not expect.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked directly at Daniel.
“But Victor is lying about one thing.”
Everyone became still.
Victor’s expression changed.
“What?”
Evelyn looked at her son.
And said:
“Richard Hale didn’t disappear to protect you from Samuel Cross.”
A pause.
“He disappeared to protect you from me.”
Daniel froze.
The factory went silent.
Because now the biggest question was no longer who his father was.
May you like
The question was:
What had his own mother done?
