# CHAPTER 2 ## THE MAN BEHIND THE NUMBERS Daniel watched the video three times. The first time, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The second time, he tried to convince himself there had to be another explanation. The third time… He stopped looking for excuses. Because the truth was sitting right in front of him. Michael Reeves. His best friend. His business partner. The man who had stood beside him through every victory. The man who had attended his wedding. The man who had held his newborn nephew years earlier and joked that he would spoil Daniel’s children before Daniel even had them. Michael was sitting inside a private restaurant. A place Daniel recognized immediately. The same restaurant where they celebrated the biggest contract their company had ever signed. But Michael wasn’t alone. Across from him sat Vanessa. Daniel’s sister. The two people he trusted most. The two people who had just tried to destroy him. Daniel watched silently as the video continued. There was no audio. Only images. But the body language said everything. Vanessa leaned forward. Michael placed a folder on the table. She opened it. Inside were documents. Then Michael handed her a phone. Vanessa smiled. Not a nervous smile. Not a desperate smile. A victorious one. Daniel stopped the video. His hands trembled. Not because he was afraid. Because he was trying to control the anger burning through him. Six months overseas. Six months believing he was protecting his company. Six months believing his family was safe. Meanwhile, the people closest to him had been cutting pieces out of his life. Piece by piece. Money. Trust. Family. Everything. A nurse stepped outside the emergency room. “Mr. Hale?” Daniel immediately stood. “How is my wife?” “She’s stable.” The words gave him a moment of relief. “And the babies?” The nurse smiled slightly. “They’re strong. The doctors are monitoring them closely, but they’re okay.” Daniel closed his eyes. For the first time that night, he allowed himself to breathe. His children were alive. Olivia was alive. Everything else could wait. But only for a moment. Because the nurse continued. “Your wife keeps asking for you.” Daniel entered the room. And seeing Olivia lying there broke something inside him. The woman who always looked unstoppable was now exhausted. Pale. Fragile. But alive. He sat beside her and held her hand. “I’m sorry.” Olivia slowly opened her eyes. “For what?” “For not seeing it.” Her expression softened. “Daniel…” “I should have listened when you told me Vanessa was acting strange.” Olivia looked away. “She’s your sister.” “I know.” “And you wanted to believe she was still the little girl you grew up with.” Daniel swallowed. Because Olivia was right. He had spent years protecting Vanessa’s image. He remembered her as the twelve-year-old girl who cried when their parents divorced. The teenager who called him after every bad day. The young woman who told him he was the only person in the world she could trust. But somewhere along the way… That little sister disappeared. And someone else took her place. “Tell me everything,” Daniel said. Olivia looked at him. “About Vanessa?” “About the trust fund.” She hesitated. Then nodded. “Three weeks ago, she came here.” Daniel listened carefully. “She started asking about the babies. About our plans. About the account.” “She knew about the trust?” Olivia nodded. “She said she was worried because raising twins would be expensive.” Daniel frowned. “That sounds normal.” “At first.” Olivia squeezed his hand. “Then she started asking specific questions.” “What kind?” “She asked who controlled the account. How transfers worked. Whether there was a second authorization.” Daniel’s face darkened. “And you told her?” “No.” “Good.” “She became angry.” Olivia’s voice became quieter. “She told me I was selfish.” Daniel looked at her. “She said that?” “She said I didn’t understand family. She said money sitting in a bank account was useless while people she loved were struggling.” Daniel looked toward the window. Vanessa. Always the same. She never asked. She always justified. “She came here today because she knew you weren’t home.” Olivia nodded. “She thought I was alone.” The room became silent. Daniel’s jaw tightened. “She planned this.” “Yes.” “And Michael?” Olivia looked confused. “What about Michael?” Daniel pulled out his phone. He showed her the video. The moment Olivia saw Michael’s face, her expression changed. “No…” “You know something.” She didn’t answer immediately. Daniel noticed. “Olivia.” She looked at him. “Two months ago, Michael called me.” “Why?” “He asked about your schedule.” Daniel froze. “What?” “He said he was checking because he wanted to plan your surprise welcome-home party.” Daniel stared at the screen. “But he wasn’t planning a party.” “No.” “He was checking when I would be gone.” Olivia nodded. A terrible realization passed between them. Michael wasn’t helping. He was preparing. Daniel stood. “I need to go.” Olivia grabbed his hand. “Daniel.” He stopped. “Don’t go after them angry.” He looked at her. “They hurt you.” “I know.” “They almost hurt our children.” “I know.” Her eyes filled with tears. “But if you go after them without thinking, they win.” Daniel remained silent. Because that was exactly what Michael would expect. Anger. Mistakes. A reaction. Michael knew Daniel better than anyone. And that was what made him dangerous. Daniel kissed Olivia’s forehead. “I promise you something.” “What?” “I won’t let them take anything from us.” Later that night, after Olivia and the twins were safe under medical care, Daniel returned home. But he did not walk into the house as the same man who had left earlier. Before, he was a husband searching for answers. Now, he was a businessman preparing for war. He entered his office. Opened his laptop. And accessed the company’s private financial system. The first thing he noticed was wrong. A transfer. Then another. Then dozens. Millions had moved through accounts he didn’t recognize. But the transactions were carefully hidden. Small amounts. Different companies. Different countries. Designed to disappear. Daniel spent hours following the trail. Then he found the connection. Every fake company. Every hidden account. Every missing dollar. They all led back to one place. A private investment company. And the owner… Was Vanessa. Daniel stared at the screen. His sister wasn’t just helping Michael. She was part of the operation. But then something appeared. A document dated six months earlier. Before Vanessa ever asked about the trust fund. Before the attack. Before everything. Daniel opened it. His heart stopped. Because the document contained a photograph. A photograph of Daniel. Olivia. Their house. And their unborn twins. Taken from outside their home. Underneath the image was a note. Three words. THE FINAL LEVERAGE. Daniel leaned back slowly. This was not about money. It was never about money. The trust fund. The attack. The stolen millions. Everything was connected. Someone had planned this long before he realized there was a problem. Then another message appeared on his computer. No sender. No information. Only one sentence. YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED OVERSEAS. Daniel stared at the screen. A cold feeling moved through him. Because whoever sent that message knew something impossible. They knew he had returned early. They knew about the camera. They knew everything. Which meant one thing. Someone was still inside his company. Someone was watching him. And Daniel was about to discover that Michael Reeves and Vanessa were only the first layer of a much darker plan. / Chapter 11 / 14

CHAPTER 12 THE LAST PROJECT OF RICHARD HALE

CHAPTER 12

THE LAST PROJECT OF RICHARD HALE

Daniel stood inside the hidden room, unable to move.

The photograph remained in his hands.

A younger version of himself stared back.

A child.

Maybe six years old.

Standing beside Richard Hale.

But there was something different about the image.

Richard wasn’t smiling like a businessman.

He wasn’t posing like the powerful founder of Hale Industries.

He was smiling like a father.

A real father.

Daniel looked at the document beneath the photograph.

His hands shook as he picked it up.

The title was simple.

PROJECT LEGACY.

Not Project Lantern.

Not another investigation.

Something else.

Something Richard had hidden even deeper.

Alex stepped closer.

“What is it?”

Daniel unfolded the paper.

The first sentence made his breath stop.

PROJECT LEGACY WAS CREATED TO PROTECT DANIEL HALE FROM THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD USE HIS BLOODLINE AGAINST HIM.

Bloodline.

Again.

That word.

The word that had followed him for days.

Daniel kept reading.

Richard had known everything.

The truth about Samuel Cross.

The truth about Evelyn.

The truth about Victor.

But there was something Daniel had never understood.

Richard did not see Daniel as a mistake.

He saw him as the bridge between two families that had spent decades destroying each other.

Richard believed the hatred between the Hales and the Crosses would continue forever unless someone ended it.

And that someone was Daniel.

Because Daniel carried both histories.

Both names.

Both legacies.

“He knew.”

Daniel whispered.

Alex looked at him.

“Who?”

“My father.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“He knew everything.”

The hidden room contained years of information.

Richard had been watching everyone.

Not because he trusted nobody.

Because he knew the people around him were being manipulated.

Michael.

Vanessa.

Rachel.

Even Victor.

They were all connected.

But they were not the center.

They were the pieces.

The real question was:

Who was moving them?

Daniel searched through the files.

Then he found something strange.

A folder with no name.

No date.

No label.

Only a symbol.

A black circle.

Inside were financial records.

But not from Hale Industries.

Not from Cross Holdings.

From another organization.

A private network.

The name appeared once.

THE ORION GROUP.

Daniel frowned.

“Who are they?”

Alex looked over.

Then his expression changed.

“I’ve heard that name.”

“What is it?”

“A private organization.”

“Company?”

“No.”

Alex shook his head.

“Something much more complicated.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Explain.”

“They influence companies. Governments. Markets.”

“Like investors?”

“No.”

Alex’s voice became serious.

“They don’t invest.”

He looked at the documents.

“They control.”

Daniel felt cold.

“So Victor…”

“Is probably not the top.”

The realization was terrifying.

For days, Daniel believed the enemy was Victor Cross.

But Victor was only another layer.

Another person being used.

Then Daniel found another file.

A video.

Recorded by Richard.

He pressed play.

His father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But calm.

“Daniel.”

His voice filled the room.

“If you found this, then you finally understand.”

Daniel stared.

“I need you to listen carefully.”

Richard looked directly at the camera.

“Everything that happened was designed to make you believe one thing.”

A pause.

“That your enemies wanted your company.”

Daniel waited.

“But they never wanted Hale Industries.”

Richard leaned closer.

“They wanted control over you.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“Because you are the only person who can legally unite the Hale and Cross assets.”

Alex looked shocked.

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Richard continued.

“Years ago, before the conflict began, your biological father created a legal trust.”

Samuel Cross.

Daniel’s real father.

“A trust that controls ownership rights connected to both families.”

Daniel stared.

“If Daniel Hale dies…”

Richard paused.

“The assets transfer to the people who created this conflict.”

Silence.

Alex understood immediately.

“They don’t want the company.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“They want me gone.”

Richard continued.

“That is why they attacked Olivia.”

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“Not because of the money.”

“No.”

Richard’s voice became heavier.

“Because they needed Daniel emotionally broken.”

The recording continued.

“They knew if they threatened his family, he would react.”

Daniel looked down.

“And they were right.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

The word surprised him.

“They underestimated you.”

A pause.

“You are not your anger.”

“You are not your blood.”

“You are the choices you make.”

Daniel felt something break inside him.

Because those were the words Richard always taught him.

Not blood.

Not names.

Choices.

The recording ended.

Suddenly, a sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Footsteps.

Someone entered the hidden room.

Daniel prepared himself.

But it wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Michael.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was Rachel.

She looked exhausted.

Terrified.

And injured.

Daniel immediately noticed the blood on her sleeve.

“What happened?”

Rachel looked at him.

“Victor knows.”

Daniel frowned.

“Knows what?”

“That you found this room.”

Alex moved forward.

“How?”

Rachel looked at him.

“Because someone told him.”

Daniel stared.

“Who?”

Rachel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your mother.”

The room became silent.

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

But she wasn’t there.

She had disappeared during the chaos.

“No.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You’re lying.”

Rachel shook her head.

“I wanted to believe that too.”

She handed him a small device.

“A recording.”

Daniel played it.

Evelyn’s voice appeared.

Victor, Daniel found the room.

A pause.

I know what we need to do.

Victor responded:

“Then he knows everything?”

Evelyn answered:

“Yes.”

Victor asked:

“Will you do it?”

Silence.

Then Evelyn said:

“I will.”

The recording ended.

Daniel stood frozen.

His own mother.

The woman who claimed she protected him.

Had just told Victor she would do something.

Something she did not want Daniel to know.

Alex looked at Daniel.

“We need to find her.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

His mother’s voice echoed in his mind.

I will.

But before they could leave, Daniel noticed something else.

The recording file had a hidden timestamp.

The date.

The time.

It was created only ten minutes ago.

Meaning someone had recorded the conversation recently.

Meaning someone else had been inside the room with Evelyn and Victor.

Someone who wanted Daniel to hear it.

Another player.

Another hidden hand.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

This time, he answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Daniel.”

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

It belonged to someone who should have been impossible to contact.

Someone who had supposedly died years ago.

The woman continued:

“Your mother is not the person you should fear.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Who are you?”

The voice answered:

“I’m the reason Richard Hale disappeared.”

A pause.

“And I’m the person who has been protecting you your entire life.”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Alex.

“Who was that?”

Alex looked at him.

And for the first time, Alex looked genuinely afraid.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“That voice.”

A pause.

“That was your grandmother.”

Daniel froze.

His grandmother had died fifteen years ago.

But somehow…

May you like

She was alive.

And she had just revealed that Richard Hale’s disappearance was only the beginning.
