CHAPTER 3 THE ENEMY INSIDE THE HOUSE

CHAPTER 3
THE ENEMY INSIDE THE HOUSE
Daniel did not sleep that night.
Not because he couldn’t.
Because every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same image.
Olivia lying on the floor.
His unborn children in danger.
Vanessa standing above her.
And Michael’s face appearing on the screen like a ghost from a life Daniel no longer recognized.
For years, Daniel believed betrayal came from strangers.
People who wanted what he had.
People who hated his success.
People who watched from a distance and waited for a weakness.
He never imagined the greatest threat would come from people who knew where he kept his spare keys.
People who knew his wife’s favorite coffee.
People who sat at his family table.
People who called themselves family.
At 4:37 in the morning, Daniel finally stood from his desk.
The entire office of his home was covered in documents.
Bank records.
Company reports.
Security footage.
Names.
Dates.
Connections.
A massive puzzle spread across his desk.
And one name appeared again and again.
Michael Reeves.
Daniel had known Michael for twelve years.
They met when they were both young and ambitious.
Daniel had the vision.
Michael had the financial knowledge.
Together, they built Hale Innovations from a small startup into a billion-dollar company.
At least…
That was what Daniel believed.
But now he wondered.
Was Michael building the company with him?
Or was he building a way to steal it from him?
Daniel opened the company database again.
He searched every transaction connected to Michael.
At first, everything looked normal.
Salary.
Investments.
Business expenses.
Nothing unusual.
Michael had been careful.
Very careful.
But Daniel knew something Michael forgot.
A person who hides money always leaves a shadow.
And Daniel finally found that shadow.
A small consulting company.
A company that technically had no connection to Hale Innovations.
But three of its employees had worked with Michael before.
Two had fake addresses.
One had no online history at all.
Daniel leaned closer.
Nobody creates a fake company without a reason.
He clicked the employee list.
Then he froze.
One name.
A name he recognized.
Rachel Morgan.
His assistant.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“No…”
Rachel had worked for him for five years.
She knew his schedule.
His passwords.
His meetings.
His travel plans.
She knew which documents mattered.
Which deals were confidential.
Which files could destroy the company if leaked.
Daniel felt something collapse inside him.
Another person.
Another betrayal.
He searched deeper.
Rachel’s account showed hundreds of unusual access attempts.
Many occurred while Daniel was overseas.
Someone had been downloading files.
Not random files.
Important ones.
Contracts.
Financial reports.
Future expansion plans.
Everything.
Daniel closed his eyes.
The enemy wasn’t outside.
The enemy had keys.
The enemy had access.
The enemy had been invited inside.
His phone rang.
Daniel looked at the screen.
The hospital.
His heart immediately tightened.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Hale, your wife is awake.”
He grabbed his jacket.
“I’m coming.”
Before leaving, he copied everything onto an encrypted drive.
Then he locked his office.
Not because the room was unsafe.
Because he no longer trusted anyone inside his home.
Including the people who claimed to love him.
At the hospital, Olivia looked different.
Still tired.
Still scared.
But stronger.
Daniel walked in and immediately held her hand.
“How are you feeling?”
She smiled weakly.
“Like I got hit by a truck.”
Daniel tried to smile.
But he couldn’t.
“I’m sorry.”
“You already said that.”
“I mean it.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Daniel, you can’t blame yourself for someone else’s choices.”
“But I brought Vanessa into our lives.”
“She was already there.”
The words hit harder than expected.
Because they were true.
Daniel sat beside her.
“I found something.”
Olivia noticed his expression.
“What?”
“Michael wasn’t working alone.”
Her face changed.
“Who else?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“Rachel.”
Olivia’s eyes widened.
“Your assistant?”
He nodded.
“I found evidence she leaked information.”
Olivia was silent.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“I think there’s someone else.”
His expression hardened.
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa was never smart enough to organize something like this.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying someone is directing them.”
A chill moved through him.
Olivia continued.
“Vanessa is greedy. Michael is arrogant. But this…”
She looked at the hospital room door.
“This is too organized.”
Daniel remembered the message.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED OVERSEAS.
Someone was watching.
Someone was waiting.
Someone knew every move before he made it.
“You’re right.”
Olivia squeezed his hand.
“Be careful.”
“I will.”
“No, Daniel.”
Her voice became serious.
“Promise me.”
He looked at her.
“Promise me you won’t let anger make you careless.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
The woman who almost lost everything because of his family.
And he made a decision.
“I promise.”
Three hours later, Daniel returned to the company headquarters.
The building stood tall above the city.
A symbol of everything he created.
But when he walked through the entrance, something felt different.
People looked at him.
Whispers followed him.
Conversations stopped when he passed.
Daniel noticed immediately.
Something had happened.
His secretary approached him.
“Mr. Hale?”
“Yes?”
“There’s been a problem.”
“What problem?”
She looked nervous.
“The board members called an emergency meeting.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who requested it?”
She hesitated.
Then handed him a folder.
Inside was a legal document.
A proposal.
To remove Daniel Hale as CEO.
His own company.
His own creation.
And the person leading the request was…
Michael Reeves.
Daniel slowly closed the folder.
A few months ago, this would have destroyed him.
Today?
It only confirmed what he already knew.
The attack on Olivia was not a desperate act.
It was a distraction.
While Vanessa was trying to steal the trust fund…
Michael was trying to steal his company.
Daniel walked toward the elevator.
His phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
DON’T TRUST THE BOARD.
Daniel stopped.
Another message arrived.
THIS GOES HIGHER THAN MICHAEL.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then the final message appeared.
THE PERSON WHO STARTED THIS HAS BEEN SITTING NEXT TO YOU FOR YEARS.
The elevator doors opened.
Daniel stepped inside.
And for the first time, he wondered something terrifying.
What if the person who wanted to destroy him…
May you like
Was not just someone close to him?
What if it was someone he had never suspected at all?
