CHAPTER 8 THE FATHER WHO NEVER DIED

CHAPTER 8
THE FATHER WHO NEVER DIED
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The hospital room felt frozen in time.
Daniel stared at the phone in his hand.
The call had ended.
But his father’s voice remained.
A voice he had not heard in eight years.
A voice he buried with the man he believed was gone forever.
His entire life had been built around one painful truth.
Richard Hale was dead.
Now that truth had shattered.
“Daniel…”
Olivia’s voice pulled him back.
He looked at her.
She saw the confusion in his eyes.
The anger.
The impossible question.
“How?”
Daniel couldn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
He looked toward Victor.
And for the first time since entering the room, Victor wasn’t smiling.
That was the detail Daniel noticed.
The man who controlled everything.
The man who manipulated people like pieces on a board.
Was afraid.
“Where is he?”
Daniel asked.
Victor remained silent.
“Where is my father?”
Victor looked away.
A small movement.
But enough.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You know.”
Victor finally spoke.
“Your father was always good at disappearing.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You knew he was alive.”
Silence.
“You knew.”
Victor looked at him.
“Yes.”
The answer hit harder than Daniel expected.
Eight years.
Eight years of grief.
Eight years of memories.
Eight years believing he lost his father.
And Victor knew.
Michael knew.
Maybe others knew.
Everyone had been carrying a secret while Daniel lived a lie.
“Why?”
Victor’s expression became colder.
“Because Richard Hale asked us to.”
Daniel stared.
“Asked you?”
“Yes.”
“That makes no sense.”
Victor walked toward the window.
“Your father discovered something.”
“The same thing you’re talking about?”
“No.”
Victor looked back.
“Something worse.”
The room became quiet.
Daniel felt a familiar cold feeling.
The same feeling from the messages.
The same feeling when he saw the hospital photograph.
There was always another layer.
Another secret.
Another person behind the person.
“What did he discover?”
Victor didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“The people who wanted your father destroyed were not business enemies.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then who?”
Victor looked directly at him.
“People inside his own family.”
Daniel froze.
His mother.
The thought appeared instantly.
Then disappeared.
Because it was impossible.
Wasn’t it?
“My family?”
Victor nodded.
“Richard believed someone close to him was preparing to take everything.”
Daniel remembered the letter.
The words.
The warning.
The most dangerous person is the person who believes they deserve what belongs to you.
“He created Project Lantern.”
“Yes.”
“To find them.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at Alex.
His old investigator friend remained silent, but his expression showed he was connecting the same pieces.
“So my father faked his death.”
Victor nodded.
“He needed everyone to believe he was gone.”
“Why?”
“Because the person he was searching for would only reveal themselves if Richard disappeared.”
Daniel looked toward the floor.
“And now?”
Victor’s face changed.
“Now you know.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I know nothing.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“My whole life is a lie.”
The hospital security team finally arrived.
They surrounded the hallway.
Victor did not resist.
That surprised Daniel.
“You’re not running?”
Victor looked amused.
“Running from what?”
“You just threatened my family.”
“No.”
Victor looked at Olivia.
“I gave you information.”
Daniel stared.
“You expect me to believe you?”
“No.”
Victor walked toward the door.
“I expect you to investigate.”
The security officers moved forward.
But Victor stopped and looked at Daniel.
“One warning.”
Daniel said nothing.
“Do not trust the person who brings you the truth too easily.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Victor smiled slightly.
“It means someone wanted you to find me.”
The words made Daniel stop.
“What?”
Victor continued.
“You think discovering me is a victory.”
He looked around the room.
“But ask yourself something.”
“Who benefited from you believing I was the enemy?”
Nobody answered.
Victor walked away.
And Daniel hated that the question stayed in his mind.
Because it was a good question.
Two hours later, Victor Cross was taken into custody for questioning.
But Daniel knew something.
The arrest meant nothing.
People like Victor did not build empires by leaving evidence behind.
The real battle was somewhere else.
Back at his home office, Daniel opened Project Lantern again.
Alex sat across from him.
“You believe him?”
Daniel looked at the screen.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s dangerous.”
“I know.”
Alex leaned forward.
“But?”
Daniel looked at the files.
“But Victor’s fear was real when my father called.”
Alex nodded.
“That bothered me too.”
They remained silent.
Then Daniel found something.
A hidden file.
Created eight years ago.
The title:
FINAL CONTINGENCY.
Daniel opened it.
A video appeared.
His father.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting in a dark room.
Daniel stopped breathing.
It was Richard Hale.
Alive.
Speaking directly to him.
“Daniel.”
The recording continued.
“If you are watching this, then my plan failed.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
Not with sadness.
With anger.
“Your mother will tell you I left to protect you.”
Richard paused.
“That is only partly true.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“I left because I discovered the person closest to me had betrayed me.”
The screen flickered.
Richard continued.
“I spent years searching for the truth.”
A pause.
“And when I found it…”
His expression changed.
“I realized the person behind everything was someone I never suspected.”
Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if you trust anyone completely…”
The recording stopped.
A loading symbol appeared.
Then another file opened automatically.
A photograph appeared.
A photograph of Richard standing beside someone.
Someone Daniel recognized.
Someone who had been beside him his entire life.
Someone who had just walked into the boardroom earlier.
His mother.
Evelyn Hale.
Daniel stared at the image.
“No…”
Alex looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Because the photograph showed something impossible.
Richard and Evelyn were not arguing.
They were not enemies.
They were together.
Holding hands.
And beneath the image was one sentence.
THE FIRST BETRAYAL WAS LOVE.
Daniel stepped back.
His entire understanding of his family collapsed again.
Because if his mother was involved…
Then who had actually betrayed Richard?
And why had Richard trusted the woman who might have destroyed him?
Before Daniel could process it, another file appeared.
A message.
FROM YOUR FATHER.
Daniel clicked.
The video began.
Richard looked directly at him.
And said:
“Daniel, before you judge your mother…”
He paused.
“Find out who your real father was.”
The screen went black.
Daniel stared.
A terrible thought entered his mind.
One question.
One possibility.
May you like
One secret that could destroy everything.
Was Richard Hale really his father?
