CHAPTER 6 THE PERSON WATCHING THE HOSPITAL

CHAPTER 6
THE PERSON WATCHING THE HOSPITAL
Daniel left the conference room without saying another word.
Nobody stopped him.
Not Michael.
Not the board members.
Not even his mother.
Because everyone in that room saw something change in him.
The businessman was gone.
The son searching for answers was gone.
The husband and father had taken control.
And that man was far more dangerous.
Daniel walked through the hallway with his phone still in his hand.
The photograph remained on the screen.
Olivia sleeping.
Their twins being monitored.
Taken from inside the hospital.
Someone had been close enough to enter her room.
Close enough to take the picture.
Close enough to hurt them.
His hands tightened.
He called the hospital immediately.
A nurse answered.
“Memorial Medical Center.”
“This is Daniel Hale. I need to speak with security.”
“Is there a problem?”
“Yes.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“My wife’s room has been photographed without permission.”
There was a pause.
“Mr. Hale, please hold.”
The waiting music played.
Daniel barely heard it.
His mind was moving through possibilities.
Hospital employees.
Visitors.
Contractors.
Someone connected to Michael.
Someone connected to Vanessa.
Or someone completely unknown.
The call transferred.
“Mr. Hale, this is Frank from hospital security.”
“Someone took a photo of my wife’s room.”
“We are checking the cameras now.”
“Don’t just check the cameras.”
Daniel looked out the office window.
“Lock down the floor.”
A pause.
“Sir?”
“Only authorized medical staff enter that area. Nobody else.”
“We can’t completely restrict the floor without approval.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Then call the administrator.”
The security officer became silent.
Because Daniel Hale was not making a request.
He was making a warning.
“Understood.”
The call ended.
Daniel immediately called someone else.
A number he had not used in years.
“Hello?”
A deep voice answered.
Daniel paused.
The last time he spoke to this person, it was after his father’s funeral.
“Alex.”
A silence.
Then:
“Daniel Hale.”
“You sound surprised.”
“I am.”
Alex Morgan was a former federal investigator who had become a private security consultant.
Years ago, Richard Hale trusted him with sensitive investigations.
Then Alex disappeared from Daniel’s life.
Not because they had a fight.
Because Richard told him to leave.
Daniel never understood why.
Until now.
“I need help.”
Alex was quiet.
“What happened?”
“My wife was attacked.”
The silence changed.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“Is she alive?”
“Yes.”
“The babies?”
“Alive.”
A pause.
Then Alex asked:
“Who did it?”
Daniel looked at the city outside.
“My sister.”
Another pause.
“And?”
“My business partner.”
Alex exhaled slowly.
“I’m guessing this is bigger than an assault.”
Daniel looked at the documents on his desk.
“Yes.”
“How big?”
Daniel answered honestly.
“Bigger than I understand.”
Thirty minutes later, Alex arrived.
He was older than Daniel remembered.
Gray hair.
Sharp eyes.
The kind of person who looked at a room and immediately noticed what was missing.
Not what was there.
He entered Daniel’s office.
No greeting.
No small talk.
“What do you have?”
Daniel handed him the encrypted drive.
Alex connected it.
He reviewed the files silently.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Twenty minutes.
Daniel waited.
Finally, Alex looked up.
“This is not a theft.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“This is an operation.”
Alex pointed at the files.
“The money is a distraction.”
Daniel crossed his arms.
“Explain.”
“Someone wanted you to notice the missing money.”
“Why?”
“Because while you were chasing financial crimes, they were moving something else.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?”
Alex opened another file.
A company document.
A merger agreement.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
“No.”
Alex nodded.
“Yes.”
The document showed a planned acquisition.
A company preparing to purchase a major part of Hale Innovations.
But there was a problem.
The buyer was hidden.
Daniel looked closer.
The purchasing company was registered under a different name.
But the ownership records had been altered.
Alex highlighted one line.
“The real owner.”
Daniel stared.
His face changed.
Because the name was impossible.
A name he knew.
A name he had not heard in years.
“Victor Cross.”
Alex nodded.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.”
Victor Cross was not just a businessman.
He was his father’s greatest enemy.
Twenty years ago, Richard Hale and Victor Cross fought over control of several major markets.
Richard won.
Victor disappeared.
Everyone believed he had left the business world.
But apparently…
He had been waiting.
Daniel looked at Alex.
“How is he connected to Michael and Vanessa?”
“That’s what we need to find out.”
Daniel walked toward the window.
“So my sister and Michael were working for him.”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
Alex looked serious.
“People like Victor Cross don’t work with people.”
“What does that mean?”
“They use them.”
Daniel thought about Vanessa.
Her greed.
Her anger.
Her desperation.
Then Michael.
His revenge.
His hatred.
Two people with weaknesses.
Perfect tools.
A terrible thought entered Daniel’s mind.
“Michael and Vanessa think they are in control.”
“Yes.”
“But they aren’t.”
“No.”
Alex looked at him.
“They are disposable.”
At the hospital, Olivia woke up suddenly.
Something felt wrong.
The room was quiet.
Too quiet.
She looked toward the door.
A nurse had just left.
The twins’ monitors continued their steady rhythm.
She placed a hand over her stomach.
“Everything is okay.”
She whispered.
She was trying to convince herself.
Then the door opened.
Olivia smiled slightly.
“Daniel?”
But the person entering was not Daniel.
It was a woman.
Wearing hospital clothing.
Holding a medical chart.
Olivia frowned.
“I thought the nurse already came.”
The woman smiled.
“I’m here to check your medication.”
Olivia looked at the chart.
Something bothered her.
“What’s your name?”
The woman stopped.
Only for a second.
“Rachel.”
Olivia’s blood went cold.
Rachel.
Daniel’s assistant.
The woman who had betrayed him.
The woman who had access to everything.
“Why are you here?”
Rachel closed the door behind her.
The smile disappeared.
“I was hoping we could avoid this.”
Olivia slowly reached for the emergency button.
Rachel noticed.
“Don’t.”
Her voice was quiet.
Not angry.
That made it worse.
“You don’t want to make things complicated.”
Olivia stared.
“You attacked me.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
Rachel looked toward Olivia’s stomach.
And for the first time, Olivia saw something strange in her eyes.
Not hatred.
Fear.
“I’m here because I know what happens next.”
Olivia froze.
“What?”
Rachel stepped closer.
“Vanessa was never supposed to hurt you.”
Silence.
“She lost control.”
Olivia stared at her.
“What are you saying?”
Rachel whispered:
“The plan was never to kill you.”
A cold feeling moved through Olivia.
“Then what was the plan?”
Rachel looked at the door.
Then back at her.
“The plan was to make Daniel angry enough to destroy himself.”
Olivia felt her heart race.
Rachel continued.
“Because when Daniel finds out who is really behind this…”
She stopped.
“Who?”
Rachel’s eyes filled with fear.
Before she could answer—
The lights went out.
The hospital room became completely dark.
A second later…
The heart monitors started flashing.
And Olivia heard a voice from the hallway.
A voice she recognized.
A voice that made her blood freeze.
“Rachel.”
A man spoke.
“You’ve said enough.”
Rachel turned toward the door.
Her face lost all color.
May you like
Because whoever was standing outside…
Was the one person she was terrified of.
