CHAPTER 14 THE LIE THAT BROKE THE FAMILY

CHAPTER 14
THE LIE THAT BROKE THE FAMILY
Daniel stared at the paper.
The words were impossible.
They were absurd.
They were cruel.
RICHARD HALE WAS NOT KILLED BY AN ENEMY.
HE WAS KILLED BY HIS OWN SON.
The room felt like it had stopped moving.
Nobody spoke.
Not Michael.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Margaret.
Daniel looked at the document again.
Then at Vanessa.
“Where did you get this?”
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the file.
“I found it in Victor’s records.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Victor gave you this?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“He didn’t want anyone to see it.”
“Then why do you have it?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Because I stole it.”
The confession surprised everyone.
Daniel almost laughed.
After everything that happened, another secret should not have been shocking.
But somehow, it still was.
“You stole evidence from Victor?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I finally understood.”
Daniel remained silent.
“What?”
“That he was never going to help me.”
Her voice cracked.
“He never cared about me. He never cared about Michael. He never cared about anyone.”
She looked at the file.
“We were just tools.”
Michael looked at her.
For the first time, they shared the same expression.
Regret.
Not because they were innocent.
Because they finally realized they had been used.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Explain the document.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I don’t know if it’s real.”
That answer made Daniel stop.
“You brought me a document accusing me of killing my father, but you don’t know if it’s real?”
“I know it sounds crazy.”
“It doesn’t sound crazy.”
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“It sounds like another trap.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I thought the same thing.”
“Then why bring it?”
“Because there was something else.”
She opened the file.
Behind the death certificate were pages of records.
Medical reports.
Private investigations.
Security footage.
Daniel scanned the documents.
Then he saw the date.
The day Richard disappeared.
Not died.
Disappeared.
The report showed something Daniel had never known.
Richard had not vanished suddenly.
He had planned it.
But someone had attacked him before he could complete the plan.
The last page contained a photograph.
A photograph from the night Richard disappeared.
Daniel looked at it.
His heart stopped.
It showed Richard outside an old warehouse.
Standing beside him was Daniel.
But the photograph was impossible.
Daniel was only seventeen years old.
He had no memory of that night.
No memory of being there.
“What is this?”
Margaret looked at the photograph.
Her face changed.
Because she recognized it.
“No…”
Daniel turned.
“You know.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“I hoped this day would never come.”
Daniel’s patience disappeared.
“Everyone keeps hoping.”
He looked around.
“Everyone keeps hiding.”
His voice broke.
“But I’m the one who has to live with the consequences.”
Silence.
Then Margaret spoke.
“Daniel.”
She walked closer.
“You were there that night.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I would remember.”
Margaret looked at him sadly.
“You don’t remember because Richard made sure you wouldn’t.”
The words froze him.
“What?”
“He erased that memory.”
Daniel stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Your father spent years researching memory therapy. He believed trauma could destroy a person.”
She paused.
“That night, you saw something you were never supposed to see.”
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“What?”
Margaret looked at the photograph.
“You saw Richard confront the person who betrayed him.”
“Who?”
Nobody answered.
Then the door behind them opened.
Everyone turned.
Evelyn stood there.
Her face was pale.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had aged years in a single night.
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
“You knew I was there.”
“Yes.”
“You knew what happened.”
A tear fell from her eye.
“Yes.”
Daniel felt the anger rise again.
“Then tell me.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“The night your father disappeared…”
She took a breath.
“You confronted him.”
Daniel froze.
“No.”
“You were angry.”
“No.”
“You had discovered something.”
Daniel stepped back.
“What?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You found out Richard was planning to leave everything.”
The words confused him.
“Leave?”
“Yes.”
“He was going to disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed everyone around him was in danger.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because he knew the Orion Group would come after you.”
Daniel looked at the documents.
“And I stopped him?”
“No.”
Her answer was immediate.
“You didn’t kill your father.”
Daniel looked up.
Confusion replaced anger.
“Then why does the document say that?”
Evelyn turned toward Vanessa.
“Because someone wanted Daniel to believe he did.”
A silence followed.
Then Alex spoke.
“Who created the document?”
Everyone looked at him.
Alex stepped closer.
“This is not an original record.”
He took the paper.
“The formatting is wrong. The signature is copied. The medical stamp is fake.”
Daniel stared.
“So it’s a lie.”
“Yes.”
A fake accusation.
Another trap.
But then Alex noticed something else.
A small mark at the bottom of the page.
A symbol.
The black circle.
The same symbol from the hidden room.
The Orion Group.
Alex’s face changed.
“This was created by someone inside the organization.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Victor?”
“No.”
Alex shook his head.
“Someone above him.”
The room went silent.
Again.
Because every answer revealed a bigger enemy.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
Daniel answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
But this time, it was not a recording.
Not a threat.
A confession.
“Daniel.”
He froze.
“Dad?”
Richard Hale’s voice was quiet.
“I don’t have much time.”
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
A pause.
“Somewhere I should have returned from years ago.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I know.”
“You let me suffer.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Richard’s voice trembled.
“Because the person who tried to kill me…”
Silence.
Then:
“Was someone you loved.”
Daniel looked around the room.
At Evelyn.
At Vanessa.
At Michael.
At everyone.
Richard continued.
“And Daniel…”
A pause.
“Your mother is not the person I was protecting you from.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Then who?”
Richard answered:
“The person who has been standing beside you since the beginning.”
The call suddenly cut.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Everyone waited.
Then Alex asked:
“What did he say?”
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“He said…”
His voice became quiet.
“The person who tried to kill him has been beside me since the beginning.”
A terrible thought entered his mind.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone who knew everything.
Then the front door opened.
A person walked inside.
Someone nobody expected.
Someone Daniel had never suspected.
And when Daniel saw the face…
He finally understood.
May you like
The greatest betrayal was never from his enemies.
It was from the person who had been protecting him from them.
