Chapter 7: The Last Witness

Red and blue lights flashed across the Pacific Coast Highway as three police vehicles raced north through the Malibu night.
Officer Ramirez gripped the steering wheel with one hand while the other rested near his radio.
Daniel Harper sat beside him, clutching Michael's letter.
Neither man spoke for several miles.
Finally, Daniel broke the silence.
"Do you think she'll try again?"
Ramirez didn't hesitate.
"If Lily is the witness Michael believed she was..."
"...then yes."
At the Bennett estate, silence settled over the house once more.
The detectives had taken every piece of evidence.
The red box.
The USB drive.
The disposable phone.
Michael's letter.
Only Ethan and Sophie remained.
For the first time in years...
The enormous beach house felt empty.
Sophie sat curled up on the living room sofa beneath a soft blanket.
She watched her father quietly cleaning the broken glass Vanessa had dropped earlier.
"Daddy?"
He looked up.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Are we safe now?"
The question stopped him.
No child should ever have to ask that.
He set the dustpan aside and knelt in front of her.
"As long as I'm here..."
"...nobody is going to hurt you."
Sophie studied his face carefully.
Almost as if she were deciding whether it was finally safe to believe someone.
Then she whispered,
"I believe you."
Ethan felt tears burn behind his eyes.
Upstairs...
Vanessa stood alone in the master bedroom.
The wardrobe doors were still open where detectives had searched.
Drawers had been emptied.
Boxes turned inside out.
Everything she had spent years organizing had disappeared in a single evening.
She stared at herself in the bedroom mirror.
Perfect hair.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect smile.
She slowly smiled.
Then...
The smile vanished.
"So..."
she whispered to her reflection,
"It finally begins."
She opened the bottom drawer of her nightstand.
Hidden beneath a false wooden panel rested a small satin pouch.
Inside was a single brass key.
Not to the house.
Not to a car.
A safety deposit box.
One Ethan didn't know existed.
One Michael had never found.
Vanessa closed her fingers around the key.
"There are still secrets."
Two hundred miles north...
Lily Carter sat in the emergency room waiting area with her foster mother.
A bandage wrapped around her left wrist.
Tiny scratches marked her knees.
Her foster father was still in surgery after confronting the masked attacker.
A police officer approached gently.
"Lily?"
She nodded.
"I'm Officer Hayes."
"We just want to ask you a few questions."
Lily looked toward her foster mother.
The woman squeezed her hand reassuringly.
"It's okay."
Hayes sat beside her.
"Can you describe the person who attacked you?"
Lily closed her eyes.
"They wore black."
"Anything else?"
"They smelled..."
She hesitated.
"...like flowers."
Hayes frowned.
"Flowers?"
Lily nodded.
"The same perfume."
"What perfume?"
"The pretty lady's perfume."
Hayes exchanged a glance with his partner.
"What pretty lady?"
Lily's breathing became uneven.
"I don't want to say her name."
An hour later...
Officer Ramirez and Daniel arrived at the hospital.
Hayes met them outside.
"She's alive."
Ramirez sighed with relief.
"Can she talk?"
"She already has."
Hayes handed him a notebook.
"She recognized the perfume."
Daniel frowned.
"Perfume?"
"The attacker wore the same perfume as..."
Hayes looked toward Lily through the waiting room window.
"...the woman she's been afraid of since she was seven."
Inside the waiting room...
Daniel approached carefully.
"Lily?"
The thirteen-year-old looked up.
Her eyes widened.
"You..."
Daniel smiled gently.
"I'm Michael's brother."
Lily stared at him for several seconds.
Then...
Without warning...
She burst into tears.
Daniel immediately knelt beside her.
"You remember him?"
She nodded.
"He was nice."
"He said..."
"...one day someone would come."
Daniel swallowed hard.
"What did he tell you?"
"He said..."
"...if anything happened..."
"...I should never stop telling the truth."
Ramirez quietly activated his recorder.
"Lily..."
"We need you to tell us what you saw."
The girl remained silent for nearly a minute.
Finally...
She whispered.
"I was playing outside."
"It was raining."
"I forgot my backpack."
"So I went back to school."
Her hands began shaking.
"I heard people arguing."
"Who?"
"A man."
"And the pretty lady."
Daniel's heartbeat quickened.
"Vanessa?"
Lily nodded slowly.
"They were inside the storage room."
"What happened?"
Lily squeezed her eyes shut.
"The man said..."
"'I'm calling the police.'"
"And then?"
"The pretty lady pushed him."
Ramirez leaned forward.
"Pushed him where?"
Lily looked down at the floor.
"There were stairs."
Everyone in the room froze.
"He fell."
"Did he get up?"
Lily slowly shook her head.
"No."
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
"Was that Michael?"
Lily looked confused.
"No."
"He was older."
"Gray hair."
"The school janitor."
Ramirez frowned.
"The janitor?"
Lily nodded.
"He saw everything."
"What happened next?"
"The pretty lady looked at me."
Lily's voice cracked.
"She smiled."
The room fell silent.
"Then she said..."
"'Nobody will believe a little girl.'"
Daniel and Ramirez exchanged stunned looks.
This wasn't Michael's death.
This was something earlier.
Something even older.
Ramirez asked softly,
"Do you know the janitor's name?"
Lily nodded.
"Mr. Thomas."
Hayes immediately searched the state records.
Thirty seconds later...
He found it.
Thomas Greene.
School custodian.
Declared dead after falling down a concrete stairwell.
Official cause:
Accidental fall.
Date:
Exactly seven years earlier.
The same day Lily entered foster care.
Daniel whispered,
"My God..."
Michael hadn't been Vanessa's first victim.
He hadn't even been the second.
Back in Malibu...
Ethan tucked Sophie into bed.
She held his hand tightly.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"If Mommy Vanessa comes back..."
"...don't let her in."
He kissed her forehead.
"I won't."
Within minutes, Sophie fell asleep peacefully for the first time in months.
Ethan quietly walked into the hallway.
His phone vibrated.
It was Officer Ramirez.
He answered immediately.
"What happened?"
Ramirez's voice was unusually serious.
"We spoke to Lily."
"And?"
"There was another death."
Ethan frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Ramirez answered with six words that changed everything.
"Michael wasn't her first victim."
At that exact moment...
A security alarm suddenly echoed through the Bennett house.
BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
Ethan spun toward the control panel.
The display flashed in bright red letters:
BASEMENT DOOR OPEN
His heartbeat stopped.
The house...
Had a basement.
One Vanessa had always insisted...
May you like
Didn't exist.
