Chapter 14: The Hunter in the Pines

The mountain road disappeared into darkness as the distant headlights blinked out behind a curtain of pine trees.

Inside Whisper Pine Cabin, the cassette recorder clicked to a stop.

No one spoke.

The final words of Samuel Brooks echoed in Ethan's mind.

Find the Broker before he finds Sophie.

Lucas slowly rewound the tape.

"I've listened to this recording hundreds of times."

"And every time..."

"I hear something new."

Ethan looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Lucas replayed the final thirty seconds.

Everyone focused.

Samuel's voice spoke again.

"Find the Broker before he finds Sophie."

The tape clicked.

Then...

Very faintly...

Almost buried beneath the static...

A church bell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Lucas stopped the recorder.

"My father never noticed it."

"I only heard it years later."

Ethan frowned.

"A church?"

Lucas nodded.

"No."

"A lighthouse bell."

Malibu Police Department

Forensic audio specialists enhanced the same recording.

Within minutes, another sound emerged.

The rhythmic crash of waves.

Seagulls.

A foghorn.

Officer Ramirez looked toward Detective Morales.

"Coastal."

Morales nodded.

"And isolated."

Daniel Harper suddenly remembered something.

"The lighthouse."

Lucas had mentioned it.

Ramirez immediately contacted the Coast Guard.

"How many abandoned lighthouse stations remain along this stretch of coast?"

The answer came back surprisingly fast.

"Only one."

Point Dume Lighthouse Annex.

Officially closed twelve years earlier.

Public access prohibited.

Whisper Pine Cabin

Lucas's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

Unknown number.

He answered cautiously.

No one spoke.

Only slow breathing.

Then...

A calm male voice.

"You found Ethan."

Lucas's expression changed instantly.

"Who is this?"

The man ignored the question.

"You should leave."

Lucas slowly stood.

"I'm not leaving."

A quiet laugh answered him.

"You misunderstand."

"I'm not asking."

The call disconnected.

Lucas looked toward Ethan.

"We have to move."

Outside

A twig snapped.

Then another.

Not the random sounds of wildlife.

Measured footsteps.

Someone circling the cabin.

Lucas extinguished the fireplace with a nearby bucket of sand.

The room fell dark.

Only moonlight filtered through the windows.

Ethan quietly picked Sophie up.

She woke immediately.

"Daddy?"

"Shh."

She nodded without another question.

Lucas looked through the window.

Nothing.

Then...

A tiny red laser dot appeared on the wall beside the front door.

Sniper.

He dropped instantly.

"Down!"

The cabin window exploded.

Glass showered across the wooden floor.

A suppressed rifle cracked from somewhere among the trees.

Ethan shielded Sophie beneath his body.

Another shot tore through the wall.

Lucas crawled toward the back door.

"They're forcing us outside."

Ethan understood immediately.

The cabin offered little protection against precision fire.

Remaining inside meant waiting to be hit.

He whispered,

"Can you get Sophie out?"

Lucas nodded.

"I know a trail."

The Escape

The rear door opened silently.

Dense forest stretched behind the cabin.

Lucas carried Sophie.

Ethan followed.

They disappeared into the trees just as another bullet shattered the kitchen window.

The shooter never fired blindly.

Every shot was deliberate.

Patient.

Professional.

The Hunter

Nearly one hundred meters away...

A man lowered his rifle.

Night-vision goggles concealed his face.

Only one feature stood out.

A black raven tattoo climbing the left side of his neck.

He pressed a finger to the small earpiece hidden beneath his hood.

"They're moving."

The calm voice answered.

"Follow."

"Do not engage the child."

"What about Ethan?"

A pause.

"If necessary."

The line went silent.

The man smiled.

Then vanished between the trees.

Malibu

Officer Ramirez's phone rang.

It was Lucas.

He answered immediately.

"We're under attack."

Ramirez stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"Location?"

Lucas gave the cabin coordinates.

Ramirez barked orders across the room.

"SWAT!"

"Air support!"

"Move!"

Within seconds, police vehicles sped into the night.

The Forest

Lucas led Ethan along an old logging trail.

"We're almost there."

"There where?"

"My father's emergency shelter."

"You've been here before?"

Lucas nodded.

"For years."

Samuel Brooks had prepared safe locations across California.

This was one of them.

Suddenly...

Sophie tugged on Lucas's sleeve.

"He stopped."

Lucas froze.

"What?"

"The bad man."

"How do you know?"

She pointed behind them.

"He isn't walking anymore."

Silence.

Ethan slowly turned.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Then...

A flashlight switched on.

Not behind them.

Ahead.

They had been herded.

Lucas whispered,

"It's an ambush."

Three more lights ignited.

One to the left.

One to the right.

One behind.

They were surrounded.

Point Dume Lighthouse Annex

At almost the same moment, a Coast Guard helicopter circled the abandoned lighthouse.

SWAT officers landed on the rocky cliffs.

Ramirez entered the weathered building.

Dust covered everything.

Except one room.

Fresh footprints.

Recently disturbed sand.

Morales called out.

"Sir!"

In the basement beneath the lighthouse stood an old communications room.

On the wall hung dozens of photographs.

Children.

Families.

Investigators.

Michael Harper.

Emma Bennett.

Samuel Brooks.

Even Ethan.

Each photograph had dates beneath it.

They had all been watched.

For years.

Then Daniel noticed one final photograph.

It had been taken only yesterday.

Sophie...

Standing beside Ethan...

Outside the Bennett house.

Fresh ink beneath it read:

Collection delayed.

Ramirez felt a chill.

"They knew exactly where she was."

The Voice

Back in the forest...

The darkness came alive with a slow clap.

One pair of footsteps approached.

Calm.

Unhurried.

A man stepped into the moonlight.

Expensive black coat.

Gray hair.

No weapon visible.

Only a faint smile.

Lucas whispered one word.

"No..."

The man looked at Ethan.

"So."

"We finally meet."

Ethan stepped protectively in front of Sophie.

"Who are you?"

The stranger smiled.

"I'm the man Samuel Brooks never caught."

He looked toward Lucas.

"And the man your father feared."

Then his eyes settled on Sophie.

"There you are..."

"My little investment."

Lucas's face drained of color.

"The Broker..."

The man inclined his head slightly.

May you like

"At your service."
