Chapter 6: The Voice That Refused to Die

No one spoke after the recording ended.
The only sound in the Bennett backyard was the gentle rustling of palm leaves in the evening breeze.
Officer Ramirez replayed the message.
Again.
Michael Harper's frightened voice sounded unmistakably genuine.
"Don't trust Vanessa..."
"She's already coming for the second child."
The final scream echoed through the speaker once more before the recording stopped.
Sophie buried her face against Ethan's shoulder.
"I don't like that sound."
Ethan held her tighter.
"You don't have to hear it again."
He carried her back inside while the detectives photographed the disposable phone where it had been found.
Ramirez carefully sealed the phone in an evidence bag.
"This changes everything."
Daniel nodded.
"If the recording is authentic, Michael believed a child was in danger before he died."
"And he specifically mentioned a second child."
Ethan looked up.
"Lily."
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Most likely."
Vanessa remained perfectly still.
Her face showed no emotion.
But inside, her thoughts raced.
Who had hidden the phone?
She had searched every inch of Michael's apartment after his death.
She had burned letters.
Destroyed hard drives.
Deleted emails.
She had watched the police close the investigation.
How could another recording suddenly appear six years later?
Someone had been saving evidence.
Someone patient.
Someone waiting.
Outside the estate, Lucas Grant watched from his SUV through a telephoto lens.
His phone buzzed.
"Did they find the phone?" the distorted voice asked.
"Yes."
Lucas sighed.
"Just like you said they would."
"They needed one more piece before they believed Michael."
Lucas looked toward the mansion.
"Should I tell them who left it?"
"No."
"Not yet."
"They're still missing the biggest truth."
The call ended.
Lucas frowned.
Even after years of working with the anonymous caller, there were still secrets he hadn't been told.
Inside the house, Detective Morales entered carrying a laptop.
"We've recovered preliminary data from the USB drive."
Daniel stood immediately.
"Already?"
"It wasn't encrypted."
Morales plugged the drive into the computer.
Several folders appeared.
Financial Records
Medical Reports
Photos
And one folder simply labeled:
WATCH FIRST
The room fell silent.
Morales clicked it.
Only one video appeared.
July 18
File length:
18 minutes.
He pressed play.
The screen flickered.
Michael Harper appeared sitting in what looked like his home office.
He looked exhausted.
There were dark circles beneath his eyes.
A healing cut above his eyebrow.
He stared directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I wasn't paranoid."
He swallowed hard.
"I've hidden copies of everything."
"I don't know how much time I have."
He paused.
Then looked toward a doorway off-camera.
As if making sure no one was listening.
"My wife..."
"...Vanessa..."
"...is not the person everyone believes she is."
No one in the room moved.
Michael continued.
"She never hits where people can easily see."
"She smiles in public."
"She volunteers."
"She donates money."
"She remembers birthdays."
"And then..."
"...she becomes someone else."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Not because she was ashamed.
Because she recognized the video.
She had spent years searching for it.
Michael reached into frame and lifted a photograph.
It showed a little blonde girl smiling at a school playground.
"Lily Carter."
"She's seven."
"She saw something."
"I don't know exactly what."
"But ever since then..."
"Vanessa keeps asking where Lily is."
He leaned closer to the camera.
"If anything happens to me..."
"...find Lily before Vanessa does."
The video suddenly glitched.
The image froze.
Morales frowned.
"Damaged file."
A few seconds later, the recording resumed.
Only now...
Michael looked terrified.
He was breathing heavily.
"I heard her downstairs."
"She thinks I'm asleep."
"If I disappear..."
"It wasn't an accident."
Then...
A loud bang echoed somewhere inside Michael's house.
He looked toward the door.
His face turned pale.
"She's here."
The recording ended abruptly.
Black screen.
Nobody spoke.
Officer Ramirez slowly closed the laptop.
"I think we officially have probable cause."
Daniel nodded.
"So do I."
Vanessa finally broke the silence.
"It's fake."
Ramirez looked at her.
"Excuse me?"
"The video."
"It could be edited."
"It could be AI."
Daniel almost laughed.
"Six years ago?"
She hesitated.
Then realized her mistake.
Technology like that barely existed back then.
Ethan stood.
He looked at the woman he had married.
For three years, he had defended her whenever anyone questioned her.
He remembered introducing her as "the kindest woman I've ever known."
Now those words felt poisonous.
"I need one answer."
Vanessa met his gaze.
"Did you ever threaten Sophie?"
She answered immediately.
"No."
Ethan slowly reached into his pocket.
He unfolded Sophie's drawing.
Then placed it beside the laptop.
Next to Michael's video.
Next to the voice recording.
Three different pieces of evidence.
Three different years.
Three different sources.
All telling the same story.
He looked at Vanessa one last time.
"Then why do they all say the same thing?"
For the first time...
Vanessa had no answer.
Just then, Detective Morales' phone rang.
He listened for a few seconds before looking up.
"We found Lily."
Everyone turned toward him.
"She's alive."
Daniel exhaled in relief.
"Where is she?"
Morales' expression became grim.
"She was."
The room fell silent.
"What do you mean?"
"About forty-five minutes ago..."
"...someone attempted to abduct her outside her foster home."
Ethan felt a chill run down his spine.
"Was she taken?"
Morales shook his head.
"No."
"But the foster father was seriously injured protecting her."
Officer Ramirez grabbed his jacket.
"We're leaving now."
He looked at Daniel.
"I need you with me."
Then at Ethan.
"I strongly recommend you stay here with Sophie."
Ethan nodded.
"I'm not leaving my daughter."
As the detectives rushed out of the house, Lucas Grant watched three police vehicles speed through the front gates.
He started his SUV and quietly followed them from a distance.
His phone rang once more.
He answered without speaking.
The familiar distorted voice asked,
"Did they get to Lily in time?"
Lucas watched the flashing lights disappear down the coastal highway.
"I don't know."
The caller whispered one final sentence before hanging up.
"You'd better hope they did."
"Because if Vanessa reaches Lily first..."
May you like
"...the last witness disappears forever."
