Chapter 12: Emma's Letter

The fire crackled softly inside Whisper Pine Cabin.

Outside, the wind carried pine needles across the wooden porch.

Inside...

Ethan Bennett stared at the envelope in his trembling hands.

Emma's handwriting was unmistakable.

Elegant.

Careful.

Every letter formed with the same patience she had shown in everything she did.

Across the front, only eight words were written.

For Ethan. Open only if Sophie is in danger.

He looked toward Sophie.

She had fallen asleep again on the old sofa, clutching her stuffed rabbit, the one recovered from the hidden basement.

His chest tightened.

She was finally sleeping peacefully.

He prayed it would last.

Taking a slow breath, Ethan unfolded the letter.

Emma's Letter

My dearest Ethan,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I prayed never would.

I hope I'm wrong.

I hope this letter spends the rest of its life forgotten inside this cabin.

But if Sophie is truly in danger...

Then there are things I never told you.

Ethan frowned.

His heartbeat quickened.

He continued reading.

Three months before my accident, I began noticing someone following me.

At first I thought I was imagining it.

The same black SUV.

Different places.

Different days.

Always disappearing before I could get close.

Ethan's eyes widened.

A black SUV.

Lucas.

Or someone connected to him.

He read on.

I hired a private investigator.

His name was Samuel Brooks.

He told me not to tell anyone until he had proof.

Especially not the police.

Ethan had never heard the name before.

Emma had hidden an entire investigation from him.

The File

Folded inside the letter was a faded business card.

Samuel Brooks
Licensed Private Investigator

On the back, Emma had written one address.

A cabin in Big Bear.

Not an office.

Not a business.

A cabin.

The letter continued.

Samuel discovered that someone had been photographing Sophie.

She was barely a year old.

We counted thirty-seven photographs.

None were taken by family.

Ethan's blood ran cold.

Thirty-seven.

The exact number of surveillance entries Vanessa had made in her notebooks before Sophie came to live with them.

Coincidence?

It didn't feel like one.

Emma continued.

Samuel believed Sophie wasn't the target.

He believed someone was watching me.

Ethan whispered,

"Why?"

As though Emma could somehow answer.

Then...

She did.

In the next paragraph.

Because of my father.

Ethan froze.

Emma almost never spoke about her father.

He had died before Ethan met her.

The letter explained why.

My father worked for federal law enforcement.

His last investigation involved missing children along the California coast.

Weeks before he retired...

His lead witness disappeared.

So did the evidence.

Ethan slowly lowered the letter.

Missing children.

Warehouse 14.

The hidden basement.

Thirty-two names.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

Meanwhile...

At Malibu Police Headquarters...

Detectives had worked through the night.

Officer Ramirez entered the incident room carrying fresh coffee.

Nobody looked up.

Every wall had become covered with photographs.

Maps.

Victim timelines.

Vehicle movements.

The investigation board now stretched across three entire walls.

Detective Morales pointed toward one corner.

"We've identified Samuel Brooks."

Ramirez stopped.

"The investigator?"

Morales nodded.

"He was real."

"What happened to him?"

"He disappeared."

"When?"

Morales looked at the report.

"Nine years ago."

Before Emma's death.

Before Michael Harper.

Before Lily.

Daniel Harper leaned back in his chair.

"So Emma hired a missing investigator."

Ramirez frowned.

"How do you know that?"

Daniel looked surprised.

"I found a receipt inside Michael's documents."

He held up a photocopy.

Samuel Brooks Investigations
Client: Michael Harper

Everyone in the room went silent.

Michael and Emma had hired the same investigator.

Years apart.

Without ever knowing each other.

Whisper Pine Cabin

Ethan reached the final page of Emma's letter.

Her handwriting had become shakier.

Almost rushed.

Ethan...

If anything happens to me...

Never let Sophie sign anything.

Never leave her alone with anyone claiming they were sent by me.

And if you ever hear the name...

Victoria Hale...

Run.

The paper slipped from Ethan's hands.

Victoria Hale.

The name on the passport found in Warehouse 14.

Emma had known it.

Years before Vanessa entered their lives.

A loud knock shattered the silence.

Three heavy knocks.

Ethan stood instantly.

Nobody knew where the cabin was.

Nobody.

Another knock.

Then a man's voice.

"Ethan?"

"It's Lucas."

"I know you're in there."

Ethan's pulse exploded.

How?

He quietly moved Sophie behind him.

The voice came again.

"I'm not here to hurt you."

"I came because Emma trusted me."

Silence.

Then Lucas added something only Emma and Ethan should have known.

"She told me..."

"...to give you the second letter."

Ethan stared at the door.

Second letter?

Emma had written another one?

Outside...

Lucas slowly reached into his jacket.

Not for a weapon.

For an old photograph.

It showed Emma standing beside him nearly ten years earlier.

Both smiling at the camera.

On the back, written in Emma's handwriting, were six simple words.

If anything happens, trust Lucas.

Inside the cabin...

Ethan tightened his grip on the fireplace poker.

He had no idea whether opening the door would save his daughter's life...

May you like

Or end it.
