Chapter 13: The Second Letter

Ethan's grip tightened around the iron fireplace poker.

Outside the cabin, the wind whispered through the towering pines, carrying Lucas's voice across the porch.

"I'm not armed."

"I came alone."

"I know you have every reason not to believe me."

The old wooden floor creaked beneath Ethan's feet as he stepped closer to the window.

Keeping himself hidden behind the curtain, he looked outside.

Lucas stood beside the black SUV.

His hands were visible.

No weapon.

Only an old photograph.

The same one he had held against the cabin window moments earlier.

Emma.

Standing beside Lucas.

Both smiling.

The photograph looked authentic.

But photographs could lie.

Ethan had learned that lesson the hard way.

Behind him, Sophie quietly climbed off the couch.

"Daddy..."

He immediately turned.

"It's okay."

"No."

She shook her head.

"The man outside..."

"What about him?"

"I've seen him before."

The room fell silent.

Ethan slowly knelt.

"When?"

Sophie frowned, trying to remember.

"When Mommy Emma was here."

His heartbeat stopped.

Sophie's memories of Emma were vague.

She had been barely over a year old when Emma died.

Most of what she remembered came from photographs.

Yet her answer came without hesitation.

"He gave me..."

She pointed toward the stuffed rabbit.

"...that bunny."

Ethan stared at the toy.

He had always believed he bought it.

Then memory struck him.

He hadn't.

Someone had mailed it anonymously after Sophie's second birthday.

Emma had smiled strangely when it arrived.

She had said only one sentence.

"A friend sent it."

He had never asked which friend.

Slowly...

Ethan unlocked the cabin door.

It opened only a few inches.

Lucas made no attempt to step forward.

Instead, he placed the photograph on the porch floor and backed away.

"You can check it."

Ethan picked it up.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Emma's handwriting covered the back.

There was also something else.

A tiny embossed logo.

Brooks Investigations.

The same private investigator Emma had mentioned.

Ethan looked up.

"You knew Samuel Brooks."

Lucas nodded.

"He was my father."

The sentence hung in the cold mountain air.

"My father disappeared nine years ago."

Lucas continued quietly.

"He wasn't investigating random missing children."

"He was investigating one woman."

"Victoria Hale."

Ethan's face hardened.

"The woman using Vanessa's passport."

Lucas nodded.

"They're the same person."

Inside the Cabin

After a long silence, Ethan finally allowed Lucas inside.

The fire warmed the small living room.

Lucas remained standing.

He noticed Sophie peeking cautiously from behind Ethan.

She still held the stuffed rabbit.

Lucas smiled sadly.

"You've kept it."

Sophie nodded.

"You fixed its ear."

Lucas blinked.

"I did."

Ethan looked sharply at him.

"You really knew her."

"I knew Emma."

"I knew Michael Harper."

"I knew Lily."

"And..."

His voice grew quieter.

"I knew your first wife was afraid long before she died."

Lucas removed a weathered envelope from inside his jacket.

"The second letter."

The paper carried Emma's handwriting.

The seal was still intact.

Ethan hesitated before opening it.

Emma's Second Letter

Ethan,

If Lucas is standing in front of you, then Samuel was probably right.

Lucas has spent most of his life helping his father.

He knows things even I never learned.

Trust him... but only after he tells you about the lighthouse.

Ethan looked up.

"The lighthouse?"

Lucas slowly nodded.

"I hoped she wouldn't write that."

"What lighthouse?"

Lucas sat down.

"There used to be an abandoned lighthouse twenty miles north of Malibu."

"My father believed Victoria Hale used it before Warehouse 14."

"What happened there?"

Lucas looked toward the fire.

"We found children."

Silence.

"Alive."

"But terrified."

"Before we could bring police back..."

"...the lighthouse burned down."

The Truth About Emma

Lucas waited before continuing.

"Emma wasn't killed because of an accident."

Ethan's breathing stopped.

Lucas held up a hand.

"I'm not saying someone murdered her."

"But her accident..."

"...wasn't random."

He pulled a thin folder from his backpack.

Inside was the original boating accident report.

Attached to it...

A forensic engineering review.

Ethan quickly scanned the pages.

His eyes widened.

One sentence had been highlighted.

Steering cable showed signs of deliberate weakening several days before failure.

Ethan looked up in disbelief.

"This report..."

"...was never given to me."

Lucas nodded.

"It disappeared before the investigation closed."

Malibu Police Department

At nearly the same moment, Officer Ramirez received an urgent phone call.

Detective Morales didn't wait for him to answer.

"We found Victoria Hale."

Ramirez turned sharply.

"Where?"

"Not her."

Morales corrected himself.

"The real one."

Ramirez frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The woman whose identity Vanessa stole."

He stared at the screen.

"She's alive."

The room fell silent.

Daniel Harper stood.

"Where has she been?"

Morales answered slowly.

"In a nursing home."

"In Oregon."

"And according to staff..."

"...she has advanced dementia."

Ramirez whispered,

"So Vanessa didn't create the identity."

"No."

Morales replied.

"She stole it from someone who couldn't defend herself."

Whisper Pine Cabin

Lucas reached into his backpack one last time.

"I saved this because my father told me never to destroy it."

He placed a small cassette recorder on the table.

"It's the last thing Samuel Brooks ever recorded."

Ethan pressed Play.

Static crackled.

Then Samuel Brooks' calm voice filled the cabin.

"If you're hearing this...

I've probably run out of time.

Victoria Hale isn't working alone."

Lucas closed his eyes.

He had heard the recording many times.

Samuel continued.

"Everyone keeps chasing one woman.

That's exactly what they want.

Because Victoria isn't the leader."

The recording paused briefly.

Then Samuel spoke six words that changed the investigation forever.

Find the Broker before he finds Sophie.

The tape clicked to an end.

No one spoke.

Outside...

Far beyond the trees...

A pair of headlights appeared briefly on the mountain road.

Then disappeared behind the bend.

Neither Ethan nor Lucas noticed.

But someone had already found the cabin.

May you like

And they weren't there to rescue anyone.
