Chapter 9 - The Vault Beneath the CityThey reached the Vale bank before dawn.

It looked like an ordinary financial institution from outside.

Inside, it was a fortress.

Biometric scanners.

Armed guards.

Steel doors.

Alexander led Clara through a private corridor.

The security system recognized him.

Jonathan followed several steps behind.

At the final door, Alexander inserted a code.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Red light.

“Access denied.”

Clara held up the key.

The scanner turned green.

The door opened.

Inside was a massive underground vault.

Boxes filled the walls.

Documents.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Clara's stomach twisted.

“This is everything.”

Jonathan nodded.

“The history of Black Thorn.”

She found a cabinet labeled:

ORCHID ORIGINAL

Her hand trembled.

She opened it.

Inside was a single envelope.

Her name was written on it.

CLARA WHITMORE

She opened it.

There was a photograph of herself as a child.

Standing beside Eleanor.

And behind them...

Gabriel.

Clara looked at Jonathan.

“Why was he there?”

Jonathan didn't answer.

The photograph had been taken twenty-three years ago.

Clara wasn't yet born.

It showed Eleanor pregnant.

Gabriel's hand rested on her shoulder.

On the back was a message.

THE CHILD WILL REMEMBER.

Clara's pulse raced.

“What child?”

Jonathan whispered:

“You.”

She found another document.

A birth record.

But the name was wrong.

Her original name was not Clara Whitmore.

It was Clara Kane.

She stared.

“No.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“What does it mean?”

Jonathan looked devastated.

“Gabriel was your biological father.”

Silence.

Clara's entire world shifted.

Alexander stared at Jonathan.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And Eleanor?”

“She tried to take Clara and escape.”

Clara's voice shook.

“And you?”

“I helped her.”

“Then why did you erase my memories?”

Jonathan said nothing.

Clara stepped backward.

“Why?”

He finally answered.

“Because Gabriel had a way of finding his bloodline.”

The vault door slammed shut.

Everyone froze.

Jonathan turned.

A speaker crackled.

Gabriel's voice echoed through the vault.

“Hello, daughter.”

Clara felt numb.

“Open the door.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I want you to read the final file first.”

A monitor turned on.

A video appeared.

Eleanor.

She looked directly at Clara.

“If you are watching this, he has found you.”

Clara's eyes filled.

Her mother continued.

“Gabriel is your biological father.”

She paused.

“But he is not the man who raised you.”

Clara looked at Jonathan.

Eleanor's voice trembled.

“Jonathan was the man who saved us.”

The video continued.

“He erased your memories because he believed it was the only way to keep Gabriel from finding the Orchid code inside your mind.”

Clara felt tears running down her face.

“Your mother loved you,” Eleanor said.

“Your father protected you.”

Clara stared at Jonathan.

“Then who am I?”

The screen went black.

A final message appeared:

ASK ALEXANDER.

Clara turned.

Alexander had gone pale.

She stepped toward him.

“What do you know?”

He looked at Jonathan.

Then at Clara.

“I've known the answer for six months.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Alexander swallowed.

“Because if I told you...”

“What?”

May you like

He looked directly into her eyes.

“Gabriel would kill you.”
