Chapter 2 - The First Rule of the Vale HouseThe Vale mansion was less a home than a monument to power.

Black marble.

Gold-plated railings.

A staircase large enough for a king.

Clara stepped inside with Alexander beside her.

Servants bowed.

Security guards watched from the corridor.

At the top of the staircase stood Evelyn Vale.

Alexander’s mother.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

Terrifying.

Her smile never reached her eyes.

“So,” Evelyn said, “our little bride survived the wedding.”

Alexander chuckled.

Clara lowered her gaze.

“I’m afraid I have.”

Evelyn descended slowly.

She touched Clara’s cheek.

The same cheek Alexander had struck.

“You should learn something quickly,” Evelyn whispered.

“What?”

“In this family, wives are decorations.”

Alexander laughed.

Evelyn continued.

“They smile when told. They speak when permitted. They never question the men.”

Clara smiled politely.

“I understand.”

Alexander’s hand settled on her shoulder.

“You'd better.”

That night, Clara discovered the first rule of the mansion.

Dinner was served at exactly eight.

At exactly eight fifteen, everyone left the table.

At exactly nine, Alexander disappeared into his private study.

And at exactly nine thirty...

The cameras inside the mansion turned toward Clara.

She noticed immediately.

She pretended not to.

Her bedroom had three cameras.

The hallway had two.

The dressing room had one.

The bathroom had none.

Interesting.

Clara unpacked quietly.

Inside one suitcase was a hidden compartment.

She opened it.

A laptop.

Two passports.

A burner phone.

And a folder labeled:

PROJECT ORCHID

She had stolen the folder from her father’s safe two weeks earlier.

She still didn't know what it meant.

Tonight, she hoped to find out.

At midnight, Clara heard footsteps.

Alexander entered without knocking.

“You looked very calm tonight,” he said.

She sat at the vanity.

“I was tired.”

“You embarrassed me.”

She looked at him through the mirror.

“You hit me.”

“That was before the wedding.”

“And now?”

He smiled.

“Now you're my wife.”

He stepped behind her.

His hands closed around her shoulders.

Clara remained still.

Inside her sleeve, her fingers closed around the emergency device she had hidden there.

Alexander whispered.

“You'll learn.”

She smiled faintly.

“I already have.”

He frowned.

“What does that mean?”

She turned.

“It means I'm learning exactly who you are.”

For several seconds, they stared at one another.

Then Alexander left.

The moment the door closed, Clara grabbed the burner phone.

One message appeared.

UNKNOWN: THEY KNOW YOU TOOK THE FILE.

Her blood turned cold.

She typed:

WHO ARE YOU?

The reply came immediately.

UNKNOWN: Someone who wants you alive.

Another message appeared.

UNKNOWN: Do not trust your father.

Clara froze.

Then the final message arrived.

UNKNOWN: And never go into the basement alone.

She looked toward the bedroom door.

For the first time since entering the mansion, she heard something she hadn't noticed before.

A faint mechanical hum.

Coming from beneath the floor.

The basement.

Clara slipped on her shoes.

She opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

She descended the stairs.

One floor.

Then another.

The basement door was locked.

But someone had left a key hanging from the handle.

Clara stared at it.

It was almost too easy.

She reached for it.

Then she noticed something carved into the wood.

Three words.

YOUR MOTHER KNEW.

Clara stopped breathing.

May you like

Her mother had been dead for eleven years.

And she had never been told what killed her.
