CHAPTER 9: THE BILLIONAIRE OPENS HIS EYES

For eight months, Everett Kane lived in darkness.

He heard voices.

He felt hands moving his body.

He listened as people discussed his empire like he was already dead.

He watched his family destroy everything he built.

But he could not move.

Could not speak.

Could not fight.

Until now.

The first thing Everett felt was pain.

Not the sharp pain of an injury.

Something deeper.

The pain of returning.

His body felt heavy.

Like he was buried beneath layers of stone.

Every breath required effort.

Every heartbeat felt like a battle.

But there was one thing stronger than the pain.

Rage.

Because he remembered.

Everything.

The accident.

The betrayal.

The voices.

The lies.

And Willa.

The woman who entered his life when everyone else had already abandoned him.

The woman who spoke to him when the world thought he was nothing more than a dying man.

The woman who promised him:

“I won’t let them destroy you.”

For eight months, nobody reached him.

But she did.

Everett opened his eyes.

Only for a second.

The hospital room was empty.

The machines continued their rhythm.

The same machines that had imprisoned him.

He looked around.

Everything was familiar.

But everything felt different.

Because now he knew the truth.

Someone had tried to erase him.

Someone close.

Someone he trusted.

His fingers moved slightly.

The effort nearly exhausted him.

But it worked.

He could move.

Barely.

But he could.

A strange emotion appeared inside him.

Not happiness.

Not relief.

Something more dangerous.

Determination.

Everett Kane was coming back.

But not yet.

Because if Sterling knew he was awake...

If Whitfield knew...

If Lillian knew...

They would finish what they started.

So Everett made the hardest decision of his life.

He closed his eyes again.

And returned to the darkness.

But this time...

He was no longer trapped.

He was hiding.

Downstairs, Willa faced the woman who had been haunting Everett’s past.

Lillian Voss.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

Dangerous.

Everything about her looked perfect.

The kind of person people trusted immediately.

And that made her terrifying.

“Why are you here?” Willa asked.

Lillian smiled.

“Because I wanted to see the woman who replaced me.”

Willa frowned.

“Replaced you?”

Lillian walked around the room.

“Everett and I were supposed to get married.”

The words hit hard.

Willa said nothing.

Lillian noticed.

“You’re not surprised.”

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.”

A small laugh.

“That is a very Kane answer.”

Willa looked at her.

“What happened between you and Everett?”

Lillian’s smile faded.

“Everett discovered the truth about me.”

“And?”

“And he was going to expose me.”

The honesty was unexpected.

Willa stared.

“You admit it?”

“I admit nothing.”

Lillian looked toward the computer.

“But I will tell you this.”

She stepped closer.

“The night Everett crashed, he was not running from an enemy.”

A pause.

“He was running from me.”

Willa felt a chill.

“Did you try to kill him?”

Everyone became silent.

Whitfield watched.

Margaret watched.

Even Lillian’s expression changed.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Lillian smiled.

“You really are different.”

“What?”

“You ask the question everyone else is afraid to ask.”

Willa did not look away.

“Answer me.”

Lillian walked closer.

“No.”

A pause.

“I did not try to kill Everett.”

“Then what happened?”

Lillian looked toward the ceiling.

“Everett found something.”

“What?”

“Something about his father.”

The room became still.

Margaret’s face changed.

Willa noticed.

“What about his father?”

Nobody answered.

Lillian looked at Margaret.

“You never told her?”

Margaret remained silent.

Willa’s voice hardened.

“Someone better start explaining.”

The Kane family had built its empire on a lie.

That was what Margaret finally admitted.

Years ago, Everett’s father, James Kane, was not just a businessman.

He was involved in illegal operations.

Hidden companies.

Secret agreements.

People who disappeared.

When Everett inherited the empire, he spent years cleaning it.

Removing criminals.

Ending old alliances.

Building something legitimate.

But someone wanted the old Kane family back.

And Everett discovered who.

“The person behind everything,” Margaret said quietly, “is someone who believes the old empire should return.”

Willa looked at her.

“Who?”

Margaret hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Willa already knew.

“Someone in the family.”

Margaret looked away.

“Yes.”

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It came from Everett’s room.

Willa immediately reached for her phone.

But it was not hers.

It was the emergency line connected to Everett’s medical system.

A call from the hospital staff.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A nurse’s frightened voice came through.

“Mrs. Kane…”

Willa’s expression changed.

“What happened?”

“The patient’s condition changed.”

Her heart stopped.

“Is he awake?”

Silence.

Then:

“No.”

The nurse sounded confused.

“But something strange happened.”

“What?”

“We found something.”

Willa waited.

“The security camera recording from his room.”

Her grip tightened.

“What about it?”

The nurse lowered her voice.

“Someone entered his room ten minutes ago.”

Willa looked toward Everett’s room.

“Who?”

Another pause.

Then the nurse answered:

“Your husband.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Willa could barely speak.

“That’s impossible.”

The nurse sounded terrified.

“Mrs. Kane…”

“The camera shows Mr. Everett standing beside his bed.”

Silence.

“He was walking.”

Willa’s blood ran cold.

Impossible.

Everett had been unconscious for eight months.

He could not walk.

He could not move.

Unless...

Someone else was involved.

Or...

Everett was awake.

Willa rushed upstairs.

The others followed.

When she entered Everett’s room...

Everything looked normal.

The machines.

The bed.

The quiet.

Everett lay exactly where he always was.

Eyes closed.

Body still.

Like nothing happened.

Willa approached slowly.

She looked at the camera.

Then at him.

“Everett…”

No response.

She reached for his hand.

And whispered:

“If you’re awake…”

A pause.

“Please give me a sign.”

For several seconds...

Nothing.

Then she felt it.

A tiny movement.

His finger pressed against hers.

Once.

Twice.

A message.

Her eyes filled with shock.

“You’re really here.”

Inside the darkness, Everett heard her.

And for the first time...

He answered.

But before Willa could react...

The heart monitor suddenly flatlined.

A terrifying alarm filled the room.

Everyone screamed.

Doctors rushed in.

Sterling appeared at the doorway.

And he smiled.

Because he knew.

Something had changed.

Someone had discovered Everett was awake.

And now...

May you like

The final stage of the plan had begun.
