CHAPTER 6: THE SECRET HIDDEN INSIDE THE FLASH DRIVE

The Kane family had one rule.

Secrets were currency.

The more valuable the secret, the more dangerous the person holding it became.

And now Willa Hayes was holding the most dangerous secret in the entire Kane empire.

A small black flash drive.

A device that looked ordinary.

Almost meaningless.

But hidden inside it could be the truth behind Everett Kane’s accident.

The truth behind his disappearance.

And the truth about who wanted him gone.

Willa did not sleep that night.

She sat in the small guest room assigned to her, staring at the flash drive sitting on the table.

A few centimeters of plastic.

That was all.

But it felt heavier than a weapon.

Because weapons destroyed bodies.

Secrets destroyed families.

She looked at the locked door.

At the cameras hidden in the corners of the mansion.

At the walls that seemed to listen.

The Kane Estate was not a home.

It was a battlefield.

And somehow...

She had become part of the war.

Her phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

Willa froze.

She opened it.

Only one sentence appeared.

STOP LOOKING FOR ANSWERS.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

A second message arrived.

THE LAST PERSON WHO INVESTIGATED THE KANES LOST EVERYTHING.

Willa stared at the screen.

Three years ago.

Her career.

Her reputation.

Her entire life.

She had thought it was an accident.

A mistake.

Now she wondered...

Had someone destroyed her because she was already too close to the truth?

At six in the morning, Willa entered Everett’s room.

She expected him to look exactly the same.

Motionless.

Silent.

Trapped.

But something felt different.

She walked closer.

“Good morning.”

No response.

She smiled sadly.

“You know, most husbands at least pretend to answer when their wives talk.”

Nothing.

But then...

The monitor changed.

A small increase.

Willa immediately noticed.

She leaned closer.

“Everett?”

His heart rate rose.

Only slightly.

But enough.

She grabbed his hand.

“You’re trying to communicate.”

Inside the darkness, Everett focused everything he had.

Yes.

He was.

But it was exhausting.

Moving one finger felt like lifting a mountain.

Still...

For the first time, someone understood.

Someone was listening.

Willa whispered:

“I found something.”

She looked around before continuing.

“Someone came to see me last night.”

Everett wanted to react.

Who?

But he could not.

“Your aunt.”

A shock passed through his mind.

Margaret.

She was alive.

Everett tried desperately to move.

Willa noticed.

“She gave me something.”

She showed him the flash drive.

“I think this is important.”

His heart monitor changed.

Faster.

Willa’s eyes widened.

“You know what’s inside.”

Another beat.

Another answer.

Yes.

The problem was simple.

She needed a computer.

The problem was also dangerous.

Every device in the Kane mansion was likely monitored.

Sterling had eyes everywhere.

Whitfield had access to medical records.

Security controlled every entrance.

The only person who could help her...

Was someone she did not trust.

But she had no choice.

At noon, Willa found Harold, the house manager, organizing documents.

“Harold.”

The older man looked up.

“Yes, Mrs. Kane?”

“I need access to a computer.”

His expression immediately changed.

“For what purpose?”

“To check something about Everett’s medical condition.”

Silence.

Then Harold looked away.

“You should not involve yourself.”

Willa studied him.

“You know.”

His hands stopped moving.

“You know what they’re doing.”

Harold remained quiet.

That was an answer.

Willa lowered her voice.

“You’ve worked for the Kane family for years.”

“Yes.”

“You cared about Everett.”

A long pause.

“I still do.”

The words were barely spoken.

But Willa heard them.

“You know he’s trapped.”

Harold looked at her.

Fear filled his eyes.

“Mrs. Kane…”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“I need the truth.”

Harold looked around.

Then whispered:

“The basement.”

Willa frowned.

“What?”

“There is an old office downstairs.”

He reached into his pocket and handed her a key.

“Mr. Everett used it before the accident.”

Willa looked at the key.

“Why are you helping me?”

Harold looked toward the second floor.

Toward Everett’s room.

“Because someone should have helped him eight months ago.”

The basement of Kane Estate was unlike the rest of the mansion.

The upper floors were luxury.

Marble.

Gold.

Glass.

The basement was different.

Dark.

Old.

Forgotten.

Willa unlocked the door.

Inside was Everett’s private office.

Not Sterling’s.

Not the company’s.

Everett’s.

She immediately noticed something.

The room had not been touched.

Documents covered the desk.

Books filled the shelves.

A single photograph sat beside the computer.

Everett and his parents.

Before power.

Before money.

Before the Kane name became feared.

Willa looked at the picture.

For a moment, she saw something nobody talked about.

Everett Kane was once just a person.

Not a billionaire.

Not a monster.

Just a son.

She turned on the computer.

Password required.

Willa frowned.

She had expected this.

Then she remembered something.

The note.

“Trust nobody. Especially family.”

She typed:

MARGARET.

Wrong.

EVERETT.

Wrong.

KANE.

Wrong.

She looked around the room.

Then her eyes stopped on the photograph.

Everett’s father was wearing a watch.

An old watch.

Something Willa had noticed on Everett’s wrist during the wedding.

A family item.

She typed:

FATHER’S WATCH.

The screen unlocked.

Her breath stopped.

Because Everett had not protected this computer with a complicated password.

He had protected it with a memory.

A memory nobody in the family would know.

Only someone who knew him.

Only someone who saw him as human.

The flash drive opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

Financial records.

Emails.

Audio recordings.

Photos.

Then one folder caught her attention.

Created one week before the accident.

The title:

PROJECT REBIRTH.

Willa opened it.

Inside was a single audio file.

Recorded by Everett.

Her hands trembled as she clicked play.

His voice filled the room.

Cold.

Controlled.

Alive.

“If you are hearing this, something happened to me.”

Willa froze.

Everett continued.

“I discovered someone inside Kane Industries has been moving money through illegal accounts.”

A pause.

“But that is not the worst part.”

The audio became quieter.

“The person behind it has access to everything.”

Willa leaned closer.

“The company.”

“The hospital.”

“My security.”

A terrifying silence.

“Even my family.”

Her heart began racing.

Then Everett said the sentence that made her blood run cold.

“The person trying to destroy me is not working alone.”

The recording ended.

But one final file appeared.

A video.

Recorded the night before the accident.

Willa clicked.

The screen showed Everett sitting in his office.

And across from him...

Was someone she never expected.

Someone she trusted.

Someone who had been helping her.

The video froze.

Because the face appeared clearly.

Harold.

The house manager.

Willa stepped back.

“No…”

Before she could process it...

The basement lights turned off.

Someone was standing behind her.

A voice whispered:

“You should have never opened that file.”

Willa slowly turned around.

And the person standing there...

Was not Harold.

It was Dr. Alan Whitfield.

May you like

Holding a gun.
