CHAPTER 12: THE UNCLE WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The dead man was standing in front of them.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Even the machines surrounding Everett seemed quieter.
Daniel Kane.
A name that existed only in old family records.
A name whispered about behind closed doors.
A man the Kane family buried twenty years ago.
Yet he stood there.
Alive.
Watching.
Waiting.
And smiling.
Victoria was the first person to react.
Her face turned pale.
“Daniel…”
The man looked at her.
“Hello, Victoria.”
Her voice trembled.
“You can’t be here.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“That sentence has been said about me many times.”
He stepped into the room.
The emergency lights reflected across his face.
He looked older.
Harder.
But his eyes were sharp.
The same eyes Everett had.
The same cold intelligence.
Willa noticed immediately.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
This was family.
Real family.
Not the fake smiles and hidden knives she had seen since arriving at Kane Estate.
Daniel looked toward Everett.
For a moment...
The smile disappeared.
Only sadness remained.
“My nephew.”
He walked closer.
“I’m sorry it took so long.”
Inside the darkness, Everett heard him.
Daniel.
The uncle he believed was dead.
The man his father told him had betrayed the family.
The man whose name was erased from Kane history.
Everett remembered being twelve years old.
His father sitting beside him.
“You must never ask about Daniel.”
Young Everett had asked why.
His father answered:
“Because some people choose to destroy their own family.”
Everett believed him.
For years.
But now...
Everything was changing.
Willa stepped between Daniel and Everett.
“You need to explain.”
Daniel looked at her.
A small smile appeared.
“So you are the woman.”
“What woman?”
“The one who made Everett fight.”
Willa frowned.
“How do you know?”
Daniel looked toward the monitor.
“Because before you arrived, Everett was already giving up.”
The words shocked her.
Inside his mind, Everett reacted.
Because Daniel was right.
Before Willa...
There was only darkness.
No hope.
No reason.
Only waiting.
But then she appeared.
“You know he can hear us,” Willa said.
It was not a question.
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Victoria looked at him.
“How?”
“Because I have known Everett longer than anyone.”
He looked at his nephew.
“He was always stronger than people realized.”
Willa glanced at Victoria.
“She knew too.”
Daniel nodded.
“She suspected.”
Victoria looked away.
Pain crossed her face.
“I was afraid.”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“And that fear almost killed him.”
The words hurt.
But Victoria accepted them.
Because they were true.
Willa crossed her arms.
“I want answers.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Good.”
He sat down.
“Because there are many.”
The room became a courtroom.
Only this time...
The truth was the witness.
“The Kane empire was built by my father and my brother.”
Daniel looked at Everett.
“Your grandfather and father.”
“But the business was never clean.”
Willa listened carefully.
“Illegal deals?”
“More than that.”
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“Control.”
He explained.
The old Kane family believed power came from owning everything.
Companies.
Politicians.
People.
They created networks that could destroy enemies without ever appearing involved.
“When Everett inherited the company, he wanted to change everything.”
Daniel looked proud.
“He wanted to end the old ways.”
Willa understood.
That was the Everett she was discovering.
The man behind the rumors.
The man who was not as cold as everyone claimed.
“But someone disagreed.”
Daniel nodded.
“Someone believed Everett was destroying the Kane legacy.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked toward the door.
Nobody spoke.
Finally:
“Sterling.”
Willa frowned.
“But you said the person behind this was bigger.”
Daniel nodded.
“Sterling was part of it.”
“Whitfield?”
“Yes.”
“Lillian?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Willa felt overwhelmed.
“So everyone betrayed him?”
Daniel looked at Everett.
“No.”
A pause.
“Everyone was manipulated.”
That answer surprised her.
“By who?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“The person who created the plan.”
The room became silent.
“Who?”
Daniel looked directly at Willa.
“The person Everett trusted more than anyone.”
A cold feeling moved through Willa.
Because she already knew.
The worst betrayals were never from enemies.
They came from people close enough to touch your heart.
“Who?”
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could answer...
The door exploded open.
Security guards rushed inside.
Everyone turned.
A man stood behind them.
Sterling Kane.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
“You people really love secrets.”
Daniel stood.
“Sterling.”
Sterling smiled.
“Uncle.”
The word was full of poison.
Willa immediately understood.
Sterling knew.
He knew Daniel was alive.
He knew everything.
“Interesting,” Sterling said.
His eyes moved around the room.
“Everyone I wanted gone is gathered in one place.”
Daniel stared.
“You were always impatient.”
“And you were always arrogant.”
Sterling stepped forward.
“Twenty years hiding.”
A smile.
“Did you really think you could come back and change anything?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.”
Sterling laughed.
“Why?”
Daniel answered:
“Because Everett is awake.”
The room froze.
Willa’s heart stopped.
Sterling looked at Everett.
For the first time...
His confidence disappeared.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
Sterling walked toward the bed.
“No.”
Willa stepped in front of him.
“Don’t.”
Sterling looked at her.
“You really think you matter here?”
“Yes.”
The answer was immediate.
And that annoyed him.
“You are nothing, Willa.”
She looked directly at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m the person who found the man you tried to bury alive.”
The room went silent.
Inside the darkness...
Everett felt something.
Pride.
A strange emotion.
A dangerous emotion.
Because nobody had ever defended him like this.
Not even family.
Sterling looked at the machines.
Then at Whitfield.
A silent conversation passed between them.
Willa noticed.
And understood.
They were running out of time.
Sterling turned back.
“Fine.”
He smiled.
“Let’s stop pretending.”
He reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
But he did not pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a document.
An old document.
Signed.
Stamped.
Official.
“This is the reason Everett Kane will never own Kane Industries again.”
He placed it on the bed.
Willa looked down.
The signature at the bottom made her blood turn cold.
Because it belonged to Everett.
But the date...
Was after the accident.
Impossible.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Victoria covered her mouth.
And inside the darkness...
Everett realized the truth.
Someone had forged his signature.
Someone had already transferred control of his entire empire.
While he was still trapped inside his own body.
Sterling smiled.
“Welcome back, Everett.”
A pause.
“Unfortunately…”
May you like
“You no longer own anything.”
