CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERETT’S SECRET

The person standing in the doorway did not move.
Neither did Willa.
For several seconds, the only sound inside Everett Kane’s room was the quiet rhythm of the machines.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
The emergency lights painted the room in a faint red glow.
The figure stepped forward.
And Willa finally saw her face.
An older woman.
Late fifties.
Silver hair pulled back.
A scar running along her left cheek.
But it was not the scar that made Willa freeze.
It was recognition.
Because she had seen this woman before.
Not in person.
In photographs.
“Margaret Kane…”
The woman’s eyes narrowed.
“So you know who I am.”
Willa’s heart raced.
Everyone in Chicago knew the Kane family.
But Margaret Kane was supposed to be dead.
Three years ago, newspapers reported that Everett’s aunt had died overseas after a sudden illness.
The Kane family held a private funeral.
No public appearances.
No interviews.
No explanations.
Just another mystery buried behind wealth and power.
But Margaret was standing in front of her.
Alive.
And standing inside Everett’s room.
“How are you here?” Willa whispered.
Margaret ignored the question.
Her eyes moved to Everett.
For the first time, her cold expression broke.
Pain appeared.
Real pain.
“Everett…”
She walked closer.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like she was afraid touching him would break something.
Willa watched.
This was different from everyone else.
Sterling looked at Everett like an obstacle.
Whitfield looked at him like a project.
The staff looked at him like a responsibility.
But Margaret looked at him like family.
“You know he can hear you, right?”
Willa immediately looked at her.
“What?”
Margaret turned.
“You discovered it.”
The words sent a chill through Willa.
“How do you know?”
“Because Everett told me.”
Willa froze.
“That’s impossible.”
Margaret looked at the unconscious man.
“No.”
Her voice became softer.
“That is exactly why they are afraid.”
Eight months earlier.
Before the accident.
Before the hospital.
Before the world believed Everett Kane was gone.
Margaret had received a phone call.
A warning.
“Leave Chicago.”
The voice on the other end was distorted.
“You know what happens if you stay.”
She knew immediately.
The Kane family had always been dangerous.
But not because of outsiders.
The real danger had always been inside.
Margaret had spent years watching the family destroy itself.
Greed.
Jealousy.
Power.
The Kane name was built like a fortress.
But every fortress had a weak point.
And that weak point was always the people living inside it.
Everett had discovered something.
Something involving company finances.
Hidden accounts.
Secret agreements.
People close to him were preparing to remove him.
Not legally.
Permanently.
He started investigating.
And that was when the accident happened.
Back in Everett’s room, Willa stared at Margaret.
“Why didn’t you come forward?”
Margaret looked away.
“Because I knew they were watching.”
“You let them do this to him?”
The question was sharp.
Margaret accepted it.
“I tried.”
Her voice cracked.
“I tried to reach him.”
She looked at Everett.
“But Sterling controlled everything.”
Willa shook her head.
“Sterling?”
Margaret nodded.
“He removed everyone loyal to Everett.”
“Then why bring me here?”
Margaret looked at her.
“I didn’t.”
The room went silent.
“What?”
“Sterling chose you.”
A pause.
“He thought you were desperate enough to control.”
Willa felt anger rising.
“Then why are you telling me this?”
Margaret stepped closer.
“Because he made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He chose someone who still cared.”
The words hit harder than Willa expected.
Because she understood.
Sterling believed desperation made people weak.
But he did not understand people like Willa.
People who had already lost everything.
People who no longer feared losing.
A sudden noise interrupted them.
Footsteps.
Someone approaching.
Margaret’s expression changed instantly.
“He’s coming.”
Willa looked toward the door.
“Who?”
Margaret answered quietly.
“Sterling.”
Willa’s body tensed.
“How does he know you’re here?”
“He doesn’t.”
Margaret looked at Everett.
“Not yet.”
The door handle moved.
Margaret stepped back.
“There is something you need to know.”
Willa looked at her.
“What?”
Margaret reached into her coat and pulled out a small object.
A flash drive.
She placed it in Willa’s hand.
“Everett hid this before the accident.”
Willa stared.
“What is it?”
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Margaret looked toward the door.
“Proof that the person who tried to kill him…”
She paused.
“Was someone he trusted.”
The footsteps stopped outside.
Willa looked at the flash drive.
Then at Everett.
A terrifying thought entered her mind.
If this contained evidence against Sterling...
Then why had Everett hidden it instead of exposing him?
Unless...
Unless there was someone even more dangerous.
The door opened.
Sterling entered.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
“Interesting.”
His eyes moved around the room.
“I thought I heard voices.”
Willa remained silent.
Margaret was gone.
Completely.
Like she had never been there.
Sterling looked at Everett.
Then at Willa.
“You’re spending a lot of time in here.”
Willa forced herself to stay calm.
“He’s my husband.”
Sterling smiled.
“You keep saying that.”
A pause.
“Almost like you believe it.”
Willa looked directly at him.
“I do.”
For a moment, Sterling said nothing.
Then he stepped closer.
“Willa, I need to ask you something.”
“What?”
His eyes became cold.
“Why did Everett’s brain activity suddenly increase after you arrived?”
The question hit her like a bullet.
He knew.
He knew something had changed.
Before she could answer, Sterling leaned closer.
“Because according to the doctors…”
He glanced at the monitor.
“Your husband should not be improving.”
Willa’s heart stopped.
Sterling smiled.
“And yet he is.”
Silence.
Then he whispered:
“So tell me, Mrs. Kane…”
“Are you helping my cousin wake up?”
A terrifying pause.
“Or are you the reason he is waking up?”
Inside the darkness, Everett heard every word.
Sterling knew.
The danger was no longer hidden.
The game had changed.
Because now Sterling understood something.
Willa Hayes was not just a witness.
She was the one person who could bring Everett Kane back.
May you like
And that made her the most dangerous woman in Chicago.
