CHAPTER 2: THE WIFE THEY NEVER EXPECTED

The first rule of the Kane family was simple.

Never underestimate Everett Kane.

The second rule was even more important.

Never let anyone discover your secrets.

Unfortunately for Sterling Kane...

He had broken both rules.

Because he had underestimated Willa Hayes.

And he had brought her directly into the heart of the secret he was trying to protect.

The first night at Kane Estate felt like a test.

Willa could feel it.

Every hallway.

Every locked door.

Every pair of eyes watching her.

The mansion was filled with people who smiled politely but looked at her like she was something that had wandered into the wrong world.

A mistake.

A temporary problem.

A woman who did not belong.

The house manager, Harold, had barely hidden his disgust when he showed her around.

“Mrs. Kane, breakfast is served at eight.”

Willa looked at him.

“And Mr. Kane?”

Harold paused.

The smallest reaction.

But she noticed.

“He receives his meals through medical staff.”

“Who controls his medication?”

“Dr. Whitfield.”

The answer came too quickly.

Willa narrowed her eyes.

“Always?”

“Yes.”

“Even before the accident?”

Another pause.

This time longer.

“No further questions are necessary.”

Then Harold walked away.

Willa watched him leave.

Interesting.

Everyone in this house had the same reaction.

A simple question about Everett Kane caused people to become nervous.

Fear was hiding everywhere.

And Willa had spent three years working in an ICU.

She knew what fear looked like.

At midnight, the mansion became silent.

The kind of silence only rich people could afford.

No traffic.

No neighbors.

No ordinary sounds of life.

Just expensive walls holding expensive secrets.

Willa sat beside Everett’s bed.

She had spent the last four hours studying everything.

The medication chart.

The machines.

The records.

Something was wrong.

She knew it.

The doses were too controlled.

The treatment plan did not match a patient who had suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Everett’s body was being maintained.

But not healed.

Someone was keeping him exactly where he was.

Alive.

But powerless.

She looked at him.

“Who are you really, Everett Kane?”

The man remained still.

She almost laughed.

Three years ago, she had talked to patients who could not respond.

Families thought it was pointless.

But Willa never believed that.

The human brain was complicated.

Sometimes people heard things long before they could answer.

She adjusted his blanket.

“I don’t know if you can hear me.”

A pause.

“But if you can…”

Her voice lowered.

“I’m going to find out what they did to you.”

Inside the darkness...

Everett heard every word.

He wanted to answer.

He wanted to tell her.

He wanted to warn her.

Leave.

Run.

Before they destroy you too.

But his body refused.

The darkness remained.

At 2:13 a.m., Willa heard the door open.

She immediately turned off the small lamp beside her.

Someone entered.

Slow footsteps.

Not a nurse.

Too careful.

Too quiet.

She watched from the shadows.

Dr. Alan Whitfield.

He looked different at night.

During the day, he appeared professional.

Calm.

Respected.

But here...

Alone.

In Everett Kane’s room...

He looked like someone who knew he owned the place.

Whitfield opened his briefcase.

Removed a small vial.

No label.

No patient information.

No medical record.

Willa’s heart began beating faster.

She stayed completely still.

Whitfield connected the vial to Everett’s IV.

Then injected the medication.

Everett’s heart monitor changed.

Only slightly.

But Willa saw it.

A trained eye noticed things others ignored.

She waited until Whitfield left.

Then she moved.

Immediately.

She checked the IV line.

The medication bag.

The remaining liquid.

Her face became pale.

“No…”

She whispered.

Because she recognized the pattern.

Not the exact drug.

But the effect.

A sedative.

A powerful one.

Something designed to suppress brain activity.

Something that could keep someone unconscious for a very long time.

Willa stepped back.

Her hands trembled.

Everett was not recovering.

He was being held hostage inside his own mind.

The next morning, Willa made a decision.

She could not accuse Whitfield.

Not yet.

Nobody would believe her.

A disgraced nurse accusing a famous doctor?

Against the Kane family?

She would lose before the fight even started.

So she changed her strategy.

She became invisible.

At least, that was what she wanted them to think.

During breakfast, Sterling appeared.

He entered the dining room like he owned the entire world.

Maybe because he believed he did.

“Mrs. Kane.”

Willa looked up.

“Sterling.”

His smile tightened.

Nobody called him by his first name.

Especially not servants.

Especially not someone he considered beneath him.

“How are you adjusting?”

“To my husband being unconscious and surrounded by people who don’t want me here?”

Sterling laughed softly.

“You have spirit.”

“I have questions.”

His expression changed slightly.

“What kind?”

“Why did you choose me?”

Silence.

Then Sterling leaned back.

“Because you needed help.”

Willa almost smiled.

“That’s not an answer.”

He studied her.

For the first time, Sterling looked at her differently.

Not as a poor woman.

Not as a tool.

As a potential problem.

“You should be careful, Willa.”

The use of her first name was intentional.

A warning disguised as kindness.

“People who enter the Kane family rarely leave unchanged.”

She held his gaze.

“Maybe that’s because the Kane family has something to hide.”

The room went silent.

Sterling’s smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But she saw it.

And that was enough.

That afternoon, Willa searched the medical files.

The official records.

The reports.

The documents everyone assumed she would never understand.

But she noticed something strange.

The accident report said Everett suffered severe brain trauma.

However...

His neurological responses were too consistent.

His reflexes were too controlled.

His body was not failing.

It was fighting.

Someone was suppressing it.

Then she found something.

A missing page.

The medication history from the first month after the accident.

Removed.

Deleted.

Hidden.

Willa stared at the empty space.

Someone powerful had erased evidence.

And only one person had access.

Dr. Whitfield.

That night, Willa sat beside Everett again.

“I found something.”

The room remained silent.

“Someone has been lying about your condition.”

She looked at him.

“I think they want everyone to believe you’re gone.”

A tear almost formed in her eyes.

Because suddenly she understood something.

Everett Kane was surrounded by people.

Doctors.

Employees.

Family.

Yet nobody was fighting for him.

Nobody except her.

She reached for his hand.

“I don’t know why I care.”

A small smile appeared.

“Maybe because I know what it feels like.”

She looked down.

“Everyone believed I was guilty too.”

Inside the darkness, Everett listened.

For the first time, he understood something about her.

Willa Hayes was not weak.

She was a survivor.

Someone who had already lost everything once.

And somehow...

She was still fighting.

Then suddenly...

The heart monitor changed.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Faster.

Willa froze.

She looked at Everett.

“Everett?”

No response.

Then his finger moved.

Again.

This time stronger.

Her breath caught.

Impossible.

She leaned closer.

“Can you hear me?”

For several seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then...

Everett’s finger moved again.

Willa’s eyes widened.

Because she finally understood.

Her husband was not sleeping.

He was trapped.

And somehow...

He was trying to tell her something.

But before she could react...

The door opened.

Dr. Whitfield stood there.

Watching.

His expression was no longer friendly.

He looked at Everett.

Then at Willa.

And slowly smiled.

“You should not have been paying attention, Mrs. Kane.”

Willa felt a chill run through her body.

Because she realized something terrifying.

Whitfield had not discovered her investigation.

May you like

He had been waiting for her to start one.
