CHAPTER 9 The Choice That Was Never Real

The shrill alarm from Amelia's heart monitor echoed through the Observation Hub.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Each sound seemed louder than the last.

On the monitor to the left, the six children disappeared deeper into the underground shaft.

On the monitor to the right, Amelia's pulse climbed dangerously.

Victor's voice filled the room.

"Sixty seconds."

"Fifty-nine."

"Fifty-eight..."

Daniel slammed the butt of his rifle against the glass separating them from the control room.

The reinforced glass didn't even crack.

Ethan's mind raced.

Victor wanted panic.

He wanted emotion.

He wanted Ethan to stop thinking.

But something wasn't right.

He forced himself to look away from the screens.

Instead, he studied the room.

The Observation Hub was too symmetrical.

Too clean.

Too... deliberate.

Everything inside had been designed for someone to watch.

Not for someone to work.

Samuel noticed Ethan scanning the walls.

"What is it?"

Ethan whispered,

"Victor always stages everything."

Samuel frowned.

"So?"

"So..."

"...what if this isn't the real control room?"

Arthur's eyes widened.

He slowly turned in a full circle.

Then suddenly laughed.

A dry, exhausted laugh.

"I can't believe I missed it."

Daniel stared.

"Missed what?"

Arthur pointed upward.

"The mirrors."

Everyone looked.

The walls weren't glass.

They were one-way observation panels.

The room had been built so researchers could secretly observe patients.

Not the other way around.

Daniel understood instantly.

"If we're seeing Victor..."

"...he can see us."

Arthur nodded.

"But that doesn't mean he's here."

Victor continued counting.

"Thirty-nine."

"Thirty-eight."

Lily suddenly tugged Ethan's sleeve.

"Daddy."

He looked down.

She wasn't looking at the screens.

She was looking at the floor.

"Mommy said..."

"...never trust the first door."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor slowly turned toward her.

"When did Amelia tell you that?"

Lily answered without hesitation.

"The last time."

Samuel whispered,

"She remembers more than she realizes."

Daniel scanned the room again.

"First door..."

He hurried toward the only visible exit.

Steel.

Electronic lock.

Directly ahead.

Then he looked to the right.

Nothing.

Just a smooth white wall.

Arthur smiled.

"Exactly."

He struck the wall with the palm of his hand.

The sound was hollow.

Hidden space.

Daniel immediately searched the surface.

His fingers found an almost invisible seam.

A concealed door.

Victor reached "Twenty."

Yet his expression subtly changed.

He had noticed Daniel.

He stopped smiling.

"Interesting."

"You've remembered more than expected."

Arthur whispered,

"That means we're right."

Daniel forced the hidden panel open.

A narrow maintenance corridor stretched beyond.

Dark.

Dusty.

Unused for years.

Unlike the brightly lit Observation Hub.

Arthur nodded.

"This was the original staff passage."

"No cameras."

"No microphones."

Victor's voice suddenly grew sharper.

"Ethan."

"If you walk through that corridor..."

"...Amelia dies."

Ethan didn't move.

He simply looked into the camera.

"You sound nervous."

For the first time all night...

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Samuel studied Amelia's monitor carefully.

Something bothered him.

He zoomed in on the heart rhythm.

Then his eyes widened.

"Wait."

"This isn't live."

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

Samuel pointed at the screen.

"The ECG waveform."

"It repeats every twelve seconds."

Daniel frowned.

"So?"

"It shouldn't."

"No human heartbeat repeats with perfect digital precision."

Silence.

Samuel looked at Ethan.

"The medical feed is pre-recorded."

Ethan slowly smiled.

Victor had lied.

Again.

Victor's calm mask finally cracked.

He snapped his fingers off-screen.

The video immediately went black.

Too late.

Samuel had already seen enough.

"Amelia isn't in that room."

Victor's voice returned.

Cold.

Controlled.

"Congratulations."

"You've solved one puzzle."

Arthur whispered,

"He never intended to show us where she really is."

Lily quietly walked into the hidden corridor.

Nobody stopped her.

She reached the far wall.

Then placed both hands against it.

"I remember this."

A soft click echoed.

An old elevator door slowly slid open.

Daniel stared.

"There wasn't supposed to be an elevator."

Arthur smiled sadly.

"There wasn't..."

"...officially."

The elevator looked ancient.

Manual controls.

Brass buttons.

Only three floors.

B1.

B2.

B3.

Eleanor froze.

"No..."

Samuel looked at her.

"What?"

Her face had turned completely pale.

"There should be four."

Arthur understood immediately.

"They erased Level Four."

Before anyone could react...

The elevator suddenly powered itself on.

Without anyone touching the controls.

A calm female voice echoed through the corridor.

"Welcome back, Dr. Amelia Blackwood."

Everyone froze.

Ethan's blood ran cold.

The system...

Had mistaken Lily for Amelia.

Or perhaps...

Recognized something they shared.

The elevator doors opened fully.

Inside lay a single white envelope.

Nothing else.

Ethan carefully picked it up.

Across the front, written in Amelia's unmistakable handwriting:

For Ethan. Only if Lily finds me.

His hands trembled as he unfolded the letter.

The first line stole the air from his lungs.

Ethan... if you're reading this, Victor has already won Phase One.

He kept reading.

Do not come looking for me.

Find the children first.

Because one of them isn't a victim...

One of them is working for Victor.

The room fell silent.

Daniel slowly turned toward the six children still visible on the descending platform.

One of them...

Wasn't a prisoner.

One of them...

Had been planted to deceive them.

Before anyone could speak...

The little boy who had called out to Lily looked directly into the nearest camera.

Then...

He smiled.

Not like a frightened child.

Like someone who knew exactly what was happening.

And with chilling calmness, he mouthed five silent words:

May you like

"You're too late, Daddy."
