CHAPTER 15 Room Zero

The words glowed across every monitor in the archive.
SUBJECT ZERO HAS AWAKENED.
No one spoke.
No one even seemed to breathe.
Arthur's weathered hands trembled against the edge of the table.
Samuel looked from the screen to Eleanor.
"What is Subject Zero?"
Eleanor didn't answer.
Her eyes were fixed on the flashing message.
Tears slowly filled them.
Arthur finally whispered,
"The first mistake."
Daniel had heard enough.
"Mistake or not..."
"...we're ending this tonight."
He chambered a round into his rifle.
"We move."
Ethan nodded once.
"I'm coming."
Lily tugged gently on his sleeve.
"Daddy..."
He knelt beside her.
"I'm not leaving you."
She shook her head.
"Mommy said..."
"...you'll need this."
She reached into her pajama pocket.
Inside was a tiny silver key.
Ethan frowned.
"I've never seen it before."
Arthur had.
His face turned pale.
"The override key..."
"I thought Victor destroyed every copy."
The group hurried through the underground corridors.
The emergency lights painted everything in pulsing crimson.
Doors stood open.
Medical carts lay overturned.
Someone had moved through the facility in a hurry.
Or something had.
Daniel crouched beside a security guard lying unconscious.
"No pulse?"
Samuel quickly checked.
"He isn't dead."
"Just sedated."
Every guard they found was the same.
Alive.
Sleeping.
Not a single fatal wound.
Daniel frowned.
"Whoever came through here..."
"...didn't want to kill anyone."
They reached a massive blast door.
Unlike every other entrance in the complex, this one had no keypad.
No biometric scanner.
Only a circular keyhole.
Arthur looked at Ethan.
"The silver key."
Ethan inserted it.
The mechanism clicked.
Heavy gears groaned behind the wall.
For the first time in twenty-eight years...
Room Zero opened.
Cold air rushed out.
The room beyond wasn't a laboratory.
It looked like a home.
A nursery.
Wooden floors.
Children's books.
Paintings of forests and birds covered the walls.
A rocking chair stood beside a fireplace.
Everything looked warm.
Peaceful.
Completely unlike the sterile laboratories above.
Lily stepped inside.
Her eyes widened.
"I remember..."
She walked toward a small wooden shelf.
Without hesitation, she picked up a faded stuffed rabbit.
The same blue rabbit Elise had once given her.
"It was always here..."
Samuel looked around in disbelief.
"This isn't an experiment."
Arthur whispered,
"It wasn't supposed to be."
Eleanor slowly crossed the room.
She stopped before a framed photograph hanging above the fireplace.
Young Victor.
Young Arthur.
Richard Hayes.
Amelia.
Elise.
And...
A little boy.
About five years old.
Smiling.
Healthy.
Happy.
Samuel frowned.
"Who is he?"
Arthur's voice broke.
"Subject Zero."
Ethan looked closer.
The child looked strangely familiar.
Not because of his face.
Because of his eyes.
Gray-green.
Exactly like Lily's.
Exactly like Amelia's.
A soft voice echoed from another room.
"You finally came."
Everyone turned.
A man stepped into the nursery.
He looked no older than thirty-five.
Yet according to the old footage...
He should have been nearly forty.
He wore simple gray clothes.
No weapons.
No restraints.
His eyes rested on Ethan.
Then on Lily.
Finally...
He smiled.
"I've been waiting for my family."
Daniel immediately aimed his rifle.
"Don't move."
The man calmly raised his hands.
"I'm not your enemy."
Arthur whispered,
"No..."
"It really is you."
The man looked at him warmly.
"Hello, Arthur."
"It's been a long time."
Samuel stepped forward.
"You're Subject Zero?"
The man nodded.
"My name is..."
He paused.
"...Adam."
The name seemed almost symbolic.
The first.
The beginning.
Eleanor's tears finally spilled over.
"I'm sorry."
Adam smiled sadly.
"You've apologized every time you've visited."
Samuel looked confused.
"Visited?"
Eleanor nodded.
"I never stopped coming."
Victor had imprisoned Adam in Room Zero for decades, but Eleanor had secretly visited whenever she could, bringing books, music, and conversation. She had been unable to free him without exposing everyone helping him survive.
Ethan's patience wore thin.
"My wife."
"Where is Amelia?"
Adam looked toward the far hallway.
"Safe."
"She reached the exit."
Ethan felt relief flood through him.
Then Adam added quietly,
"But Victor followed her."
Before anyone could react...
A loud explosion shook the underground complex.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Emergency sirens began screaming.
SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIATED
Daniel looked toward the exit.
"He's blowing up the facility!"
Arthur's face turned white.
"There are enough explosives down here to bury the entire mountain."
The loudspeakers crackled.
Victor's voice returned.
Calm.
Almost peaceful.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...Project Eden has ended."
Ethan shouted,
"Where are you?"
Victor ignored him.
"I spent thirty years trying to prove one thing."
"That perfection could be created."
A pause.
"I was wrong."
Everyone looked at the speakers.
Victor continued.
"I created fear."
"I created loneliness."
"I created monsters."
Another pause.
"But I never created family."
Samuel frowned.
"Is this a trick?"
Adam slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Listen."
Victor's voice grew softer.
"Ethan..."
"You already won."
"Long before tonight."
"You simply didn't know it."
A final security monitor flickered to life.
Amelia appeared.
Alive.
Standing beside Elise.
Subject Eight clung to her hand.
All three had reached an emergency exit.
Amelia looked into the camera.
"Ethan!"
"We're outside!"
Relief washed over the room.
Lily burst into tears.
"Mommy!"
Daniel immediately began directing everyone toward the evacuation tunnel.
But Adam didn't move.
Eleanor looked at him.
"Come with us."
He smiled gently.
"I can't."
Arthur stepped forward.
"Why?"
Adam looked around the nursery.
"This place is my prison."
"But it's also the only home I've ever known."
The self-destruct countdown echoed through the speakers.
Five minutes remaining.
Ethan grabbed Adam's arm.
"You're coming."
Adam looked at Lily.
Then at Subject Eight on the monitor.
Finally at Ethan.
He smiled.
"You've already saved the children."
"My story ended years ago."
Suddenly, Lily ran forward and hugged Adam tightly.
He froze.
No one had embraced him in decades.
The man quietly closed his eyes.
A single tear rolled down his cheek.
"I... don't remember..."
"...what this feels like."
Lily looked up at him.
"You don't have to stay here anymore."
Adam opened his eyes.
For the first time in twenty-eight years...
He nodded.
"Then..."
"...let's go home."
The group ran toward the emergency tunnel as the facility shook violently behind them.
Far above, dawn's first light began to break over the Blackwood estate.
For the first time in seven years...
Ethan wasn't running toward the past.
He was running toward his family.
May you like
