CHAPTER 1 The Girl Who Should Have Been Dead

Victor Blackwood lifted the syringe.

On the tiny phone screen, his movements were calm, almost gentle, like a doctor preparing to ease a patient's pain rather than end a life.

Ethan Blackwood's heart slammed against his ribs.

For seven years he had mourned his wife.

For seven years he had visited a grave that now seemed to contain nothing but lies.

And at this very second...

She was alive.

"Trace the signal," Ethan barked.

Every security officer in the room sprang into motion.

His chief of security, Daniel Cross, snatched the phone from Ethan's hand and plugged it into a portable forensic device.

"I'm trying."

"The stream is encrypted."

"I need two minutes."

"You have thirty seconds."

Daniel didn't argue.

He had worked for Ethan for fifteen years.

He had never seen his employer afraid.

Until tonight.

Across the room Nora sat handcuffed to a dining chair.

She stared at the floor, unable to meet Ethan's eyes.

"I told him not to hurt them," she whispered.

"I begged him."

Ethan turned so suddenly the chair beneath Nora nearly tipped over.

"You watched my daughter grow up."

"You watched me grieve every anniversary."

"You looked me in the eye for two years."

"And you said nothing."

Nora began crying.

"You don't understand."

"No."

"I understand perfectly."

"You sold a child."

Lily quietly walked across the room.

She stopped beside Nora.

Despite everything, the little girl gently placed a blanket over the older woman's shaking shoulders.

Ethan froze.

"Why would you do that?"

Lily looked confused by the question.

"Because she's scared."

"She was mean."

"But scared people cry."

The innocence in her voice sliced through Ethan harder than any accusation.

How many nights had this child comforted the very woman who had stolen her life?

Daniel interrupted.

"I found something."

Everyone crowded around the monitor.

The stream wasn't coming from another country.

It wasn't even leaving the city.

The signal originated less than six miles away.

Saint Gabriel Medical Research Center.

Ethan frowned.

"That hospital closed years ago."

Daniel zoomed in.

"No."

"The original hospital closed."

"This is registered as a private neurological rehabilitation facility."

Ethan had never heard of it.

Which meant someone had buried it very carefully.

Then the live video suddenly shook.

Victor looked directly toward the hidden camera.

Almost as though...

He knew someone was watching.

Victor smiled.

Slowly.

Coldly.

He raised one finger.

And pointed directly at the camera.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel finally broke the silence.

"He knew."

"He somehow knew the camera was compromised."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Prepare the cars."

"I'm going there."

Dr. Samuel Hayes stepped forward.

"That's exactly what Victor expects."

"What?"

"He poisoned you tonight."

"When that failed, he cut the camera."

"He's forcing you to react emotionally."

Ethan looked at the doctor.

Samuel had been Amelia's closest friend.

He rarely offered opinions unless he was certain.

"If she's alive—"

"I know."

Samuel lowered his voice.

"But if Victor kept her alive for seven years..."

"He won't suddenly kill her because the plan failed."

"He'll move her."

"We need to know where."

Daniel nodded.

"The doctor is right."

"If we storm the building now, we'll find empty rooms."

Ethan hated hearing it.

Because it made sense.

Lily tugged gently on his sleeve.

"Daddy?"

The word hit him like sunlight breaking through years of darkness.

She had said it naturally this time.

Without fear.

Without hesitation.

He knelt beside her.

"Yes?"

"I know another place."

Everyone turned.

"What do you mean?"

Lily pointed to the phone.

"When Aunt Nora visited him..."

"Sometimes they took me."

"They thought I was asleep."

"But I wasn't."

"You remember where?"

She nodded.

"There were two buildings."

"This one..."

She touched the screen.

"...and another one."

"With birds."

Daniel frowned.

"Birds?"

"Big white birds."

"They stood in the water."

Samuel immediately looked up.

"Herons."

"There are wetlands north of the city."

Daniel pulled up satellite maps.

Only three abandoned medical properties sat near protected wetlands.

One belonged to Victor Blackwood's charitable foundation.

The ownership records had been hidden behind five shell companies.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

"We found him."

Meanwhile...

Victor calmly placed the unused syringe back into its case.

A man wearing a black suit entered Amelia's room.

"They know."

Victor smiled.

"Of course they do."

"The poison failed."

"The girl interfered."

The man hesitated.

"Should we move the patient?"

Victor looked through the window at Amelia.

Even unconscious...

She looked peaceful.

"No."

"Leave her."

"What about the child?"

Victor laughed quietly.

"The child is already serving her purpose."

The bodyguard frowned.

"I don't understand."

Victor walked toward a large wall covered in photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Every single picture showed Ethan.

Leaving work.

Entering meetings.

Visiting Amelia's grave.

Watching Lily play in the garden.

Some had been taken only yesterday.

Victor removed one photograph.

Behind it was another.

A hidden image.

Lily.

Sleeping.

Someone had written across the picture in red ink.

GENETIC MATCH CONFIRMED

Victor smiled.

"Ethan believes tonight is about inheritance."

"It isn't."

The bodyguard waited.

Victor continued.

"The Blackwood fortune..."

"...is the least valuable thing that child possesses."

Back at the mansion...

Daniel's investigators searched Nora's bedroom.

Within fifteen minutes they found a loose floorboard.

Inside were dozens of envelopes.

Cash.

Fake passports.

Hospital records.

Photographs.

One envelope was marked:

ONLY IF ETHAN FINDS HER

Daniel handed it over.

Ethan slowly opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Not from Nora.

From Amelia.

His hands shook before he even unfolded it.

The date made his blood run cold.

It had been written...

Three days after the hospital fire.

Which meant Amelia survived long enough to write it.

The first line read:

Ethan... if you're reading this, someone betrayed us from inside the family.

His breathing stopped.

He continued reading.

Trust no Blackwood except the child.

Below the sentence was a fingerprint.

Not ink.

Blood.

Lily stared at the page.

"That's Mommy's writing."

Ethan looked at her.

"How do you know?"

She smiled sadly.

"She taught me."

Silence filled the room.

Ethan's world tilted.

If Amelia had taught Lily to recognize her handwriting...

Then Lily hadn't merely seen her mother.

She had been with her.

Recently.

Very recently.

Before Ethan could ask another question...

Every light inside the mansion suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then the emergency generator failed.

Daniel reached for his pistol.

"This isn't a power outage."

"It's an attack."

Outside...

More than twenty black SUVs silently rolled through the front gates.

The security cameras had already gone offline.

And somewhere in the darkness, a child whispered:

May you like

"They found us..."
