CHAPTER 10 The Boy Who Wasn't Afraid

The room fell silent.
On the monitor, the little boy's smile lingered for a heartbeat before the screen flickered with static.
No tears.
No panic.
No desperate cries for help.
Only those five words, spoken without a sound.
You're too late, Daddy.
Ethan felt a chill crawl up his spine.
"He wasn't talking to me."
Samuel looked over.
"What?"
Ethan replayed the footage in his mind.
"The way he said it..."
"He wasn't begging."
"He was delivering a message."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"To Victor."
Arthur stepped closer to the monitor.
"Freeze the last frame."
Daniel enlarged the boy's face.
The resolution blurred, but one detail remained clear.
His right ear.
There was no implant scar.
Samuel frowned.
"Every child in Project Eden had an implant."
Eleanor nodded.
"Without exception."
Daniel looked at the screen again.
"So if he doesn't..."
Arthur finished the sentence.
"...he was never a subject."
Lily stared at the frozen image.
"I know him."
Ethan knelt beside her.
"What's his name?"
She shook her head.
"We weren't allowed names."
"But..."
"He never slept with us."
"He always disappeared after the tests."
Samuel whispered,
"He had special access."
Daniel opened the maintenance corridor.
"We're going after the others."
Arthur stopped him.
"No."
Daniel frowned.
"What now?"
Arthur pointed toward the elevator.
"Victor left us this."
"He wanted Ethan to find the letter."
"So there's another message."
Ethan looked inside the envelope again.
His fingers brushed against something hidden beneath the paper.
A second sheet.
Folded twice.
Smaller.
Different handwriting.
Not Amelia's.
He unfolded it.
Only one sentence appeared.
Trust the child who lies. Fear the adult who tells the truth.
There was no signature.
Samuel read it twice.
"That makes no sense."
Eleanor slowly shook her head.
"It does."
Victor trained everyone differently."
"He taught children to survive by lying."
"He taught adults to survive by obedience."
Arthur looked grim.
"In Project Eden..."
"...telling the truth could get you killed."
Suddenly the ancient elevator chimed.
A hidden compartment slid open beneath the control panel.
Inside rested an old brass keycard.
Its faded label read:
LEVEL 4
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
"You said there wasn't a Level Four."
"There shouldn't be."
Arthur quietly corrected her.
"There wasn't..."
"...on any official blueprint."
Ethan inserted the keycard.
The elevator panel flickered.
A fourth button slowly illuminated.
B4
For several seconds, no one moved.
Lily stared at the glowing button.
Her breathing became uneven.
"I don't want to go there."
Ethan gently squeezed her hand.
"You don't have to."
She looked into his eyes.
"They'll make you forget."
Samuel frowned.
"Forget what?"
"Everything."
The elevator descended.
B1...
The machinery groaned beneath their feet.
B2...
The air grew noticeably colder.
B3...
The lights flickered.
Then...
A fourth tone sounded.
B4
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
Unlike the floors above, Level Four wasn't white.
It was unfinished concrete.
Bare steel beams lined the ceiling.
Old fluorescent lights buzzed weakly overhead.
Dust covered everything.
It looked abandoned.
Except...
Every light turned on the moment Lily stepped out.
Motion sensors.
Or something more.
At the end of the corridor stood a massive steel door.
Above it...
One word.
ARCHIVE
Daniel carefully approached.
"No electronic lock."
Arthur examined the hinges.
"Mechanical."
Ethan inserted the brass keycard.
The lock clicked.
The heavy door slowly swung inward.
Rows upon rows of filing cabinets stretched into darkness.
Thousands of paper records.
Old photographs.
Medical files.
Boxes labeled only with years.
Samuel whispered,
"My God..."
"They kept everything."
Eleanor walked toward one cabinet without hesitation.
She already knew where she was going.
Drawer 7.
She pulled it open.
Inside sat a single red folder.
Across the front:
SUBJECT 7
Lily instinctively stepped backward.
"I don't want to see it."
Ethan looked at her.
"You don't have to."
She nodded silently.
He opened the file alone.
The first page made his hands tremble.
Subject Number: 7
Biological Name: Lily Amelia Blackwood
Father: Ethan Blackwood
Mother: Amelia Blackwood
Below that...
A line no father should ever read.
Status at Birth: Successful.
Not "healthy."
Not "alive."
Successful.
Samuel turned the page.
His face lost all color.
Blood reports.
Genetic sequencing.
Neurological scans.
Everything from the day Lily was born.
But one page had been highlighted in red.
Phase One Complete
Phase Two Delayed
Awaiting Maternal Activation
Ethan stared.
"What does that mean?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
Arthur reached into another cabinet.
Subject 1.
Empty.
Subject 2.
Empty.
Subject 3.
Destroyed.
Subject 4.
Destroyed.
Subject 5.
Destroyed.
Subject 6.
Destroyed.
Only Subject 7 remained complete.
Arthur whispered,
"She really was the only survivor."
Daniel suddenly noticed something pinned to the far wall.
A large family photograph.
Not the Blackwoods.
Victor.
Eleanor.
Richard Hayes.
Young Arthur.
Several scientists.
And...
Amelia.
Standing among them.
She couldn't have been older than twenty-two.
Long before she met Ethan.
Samuel stared in disbelief.
"My mother..."
"...and Amelia..."
"...worked together."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Ethan slowly turned toward her.
"You knew Amelia before I did."
"I did."
"You introduced us."
"Yes."
His voice broke.
"Was any of it real?"
The question echoed through the archive.
Eleanor looked directly at him.
Then answered with tears in her eyes.
"The love was real."
"Everything else..."
"...was planned."
Silence crushed the room.
Ethan felt as though the ground had vanished beneath him.
Even meeting Amelia...
Had begun as part of Victor's design.
Before anyone could speak again...
A slow clap echoed from somewhere inside the archive.
One.
Two.
Three.
Daniel spun toward the sound.
His rifle raised.
A shadow stepped between the filing cabinets.
Not Victor.
Not one of his guards.
A woman.
Thin.
Barefoot.
Wearing a faded hospital gown.
Her face was scarred.
Her hair reached almost to her waist.
She looked directly at Ethan.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then she whispered the words he had dreamed of hearing for seven years.
"Ethan..."
He took one stunned step forward.
"Amelia...?"
The woman smiled weakly.
Then shook her head.
"No..."
"I'm not Amelia."
She pointed deeper into the darkness of the archive.
"You have to hurry..."
May you like
"...before my sister dies."
