CHAPTER 8 The Tunnel That Remembered

No one spoke.
The flashlight beam remained fixed on the dusty footprints leading down the stone staircase.
Small.
Barefoot.
Fresh.
Lily's footprints.
Daniel crouched and examined them carefully.
The dust around the prints was undisturbed except for one detail.
"There are only one set," he murmured.
Samuel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel looked up.
"Someone walked down."
"...but nobody walked back."
A cold silence settled over the group.
Ethan instinctively pulled Lily closer.
"Lily."
"Look at me."
She slowly raised her eyes.
"You've never been here with me."
She nodded.
"I know."
"Then why did you say those are yours?"
Lily looked genuinely confused.
"Because..."
"I remember touching the wall."
She pointed toward the tunnel.
"...and counting the lights."
Arthur's expression tightened.
"There are no lights."
"There used to be."
Lily answered without hesitation.
"Thirty-two."
Arthur exchanged a worried glance with Eleanor.
Neither of them had mentioned the old lighting system.
The original tunnel had indeed contained thirty-two recessed lamps before Victor sealed it years ago.
No one outside the project should have known that.
Certainly not a seven-year-old girl.
Unless...
She had actually been there.
Recently.
Daniel stood.
"We're wasting time."
He led the team down the spiral staircase.
The deeper they descended, the colder the air became.
Moisture dripped from the stone ceiling.
The smell of earth mixed with old machinery.
Ethan carried Lily in his arms.
She buried her face against his shoulder.
Then quietly whispered,
"Turn left."
Daniel stopped.
"There isn't a left."
Arthur shined his flashlight ahead.
Only a solid brick wall.
Lily shook her head.
"There is."
"The wall opens."
Arthur's heartbeat quickened.
He walked toward the wall and brushed decades of dust away.
His fingers found a tiny brass plate hidden between two stones.
He pressed it.
With a deep metallic groan...
The wall slowly slid aside.
Daniel stared.
"No blueprint showed this."
Arthur whispered,
"Because Victor erased it."
Beyond the hidden passage lay an older tunnel.
Its walls were lined with faded white tiles.
Rusted pipes ran along the ceiling.
Everything looked abandoned.
Except...
The lights.
One by one.
Without anyone touching a switch.
The ancient lamps flickered to life.
One.
Two.
Three.
Until all thirty-two glowed softly down the corridor.
Lily smiled sadly.
"I told you."
Samuel looked at Eleanor.
"Did you activate them?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
Daniel immediately drew his pistol.
"Motion sensors."
"Someone knows we're here."
Far away...
Deep inside the underground facility...
Victor watched dozens of surveillance monitors.
Every corridor.
Every door.
Every heartbeat.
A technician looked confused.
"Sir."
"We didn't activate Corridor Twelve."
Victor smiled without taking his eyes off the screen.
"I know."
The technician frowned.
"Then who did?"
Victor's smile slowly disappeared.
"There is only one person who still has that authority."
He turned toward another monitor.
Amelia.
Still restrained.
Still silent.
Yet...
The fingers of her left hand had moved.
Back inside the tunnel...
The team advanced cautiously.
The corridor ended at a massive steel blast door.
Its electronic keypad remained dark.
Daniel examined it.
"No power."
Arthur reached into his pocket.
"The key."
He inserted the brass key.
Nothing happened.
The lock refused to turn.
Eleanor stepped forward.
"It needs two keys."
Nora's key.
Arthur's key.
Nora was still back at the mansion.
Daniel cursed.
"We don't have time."
Lily quietly slipped from Ethan's arms.
She walked toward the door.
No one stopped her.
She gently placed her tiny hand against the cold steel.
For several seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then...
A soft chime echoed through the corridor.
A green light blinked above the keypad.
BIOMETRIC MATCH CONFIRMED
The enormous blast door unlocked itself.
No code.
No key.
Only Lily.
Daniel stared at her.
Victor had been telling the truth.
She wasn't just a hostage.
She was the key.
The heavy door slowly opened.
Beyond it stretched a pristine white hallway.
Spotless.
Modern.
Brightly lit.
As though time itself had skipped over this place.
Ethan looked around.
"This isn't abandoned."
Eleanor nodded.
"It never was."
Suddenly...
A little voice echoed from somewhere ahead.
"Lily?"
Everyone froze.
The voice came again.
"Lily..."
"It really is you..."
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
"I know that voice."
She ran before anyone could stop her.
"Lily!"
Ethan chased after her.
The hallway opened into a large glass observation room.
Inside sat six children wearing gray uniforms.
The same children Victor had shown on the live feed.
The moment they saw Lily...
Every one of them stood.
A little boy rushed to the glass.
"You came back!"
Another girl began crying.
"We knew you'd find us."
Lily pressed both hands against the glass.
"I came with my daddy."
The children looked at Ethan.
None of them smiled.
Instead...
They all looked frightened.
One little girl slowly shook her head.
"No..."
"You shouldn't have brought him."
Ethan frowned.
"Why?"
The girl pointed toward the ceiling.
"They're watching."
Daniel immediately scanned the room.
Tiny black domes.
Cameras.
At least twenty.
Too many to destroy quickly.
Arthur whispered,
"We've entered the Observation Hub."
Samuel checked the doors.
"They're magnetically sealed."
Eleanor nodded.
"Victor controls everything from here."
As if on cue...
Every screen inside the room flickered on.
Victor appeared.
Applauding.
"Excellent."
"You arrived even faster than I expected."
Ethan stepped forward.
"Open the doors."
Victor smiled.
"I already did."
A loud metallic click echoed behind them.
Daniel spun around.
The blast door they had entered through...
Had slammed shut.
Steel locking bolts slid into place.
They were trapped.
Victor leaned back in his chair.
"You've just entered the oldest laboratory in the Blackwood Project."
He looked toward Lily.
"Welcome home."
Before Ethan could answer...
The floor beneath the children's room suddenly began to descend like an elevator.
The six terrified children screamed.
"Lily!"
"Help us!"
Ethan lunged toward the glass.
The platform was already moving downward into darkness.
Samuel shouted,
"They're taking them!"
Victor calmly raised a finger.
"You have exactly sixty seconds."
Ethan glared at the screen.
"For what?"
Victor's smile widened.
"Choose."
"The children..."
"...or Amelia."
Then the screen switched.
On one monitor...
The six children continued descending into the darkness.
On another...
May you like
Amelia's heart monitor suddenly began sounding a rapid, continuous alarm.
