CHAPTER 7 The Man With William's Face

The room fell into stunned silence.
Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the frozen surveillance screen.
The man standing in Ethan's bedroom...
had William Sterling's face.
Not similar.
Not merely a resemblance.
The same eyes.
The same scar above the right eyebrow.
The same silver cufflinks William had worn earlier that evening.
Detective Brooks was the first to speak.
"...Is this some kind of deepfake?"
The forensic technician shook his head immediately.
"No."
He zoomed into the frame.
"The timestamp is authentic."
"No signs of digital manipulation."
William stared at the image, his breathing uneven.
"I've never seen this man."
Lucas's voice crackled through the ceiling speaker.
"You have."
William looked up.
"What?"
"You just don't remember."
The Missing Years
Brooks stepped closer to the microphone.
"Lucas, explain."
A long silence followed.
When Lucas spoke again, his tone had changed.
Less urgent.
More personal.
"When William was eight years old..."
"...there was a fire."
William frowned.
"I remember the fire."
"No."
"You remember the story."
The words hit like a hammer.
Lucas continued.
"You woke up three weeks later."
"The doctors told you smoke inhalation caused memory loss."
William's heartbeat quickened.
"That's true."
"No."
"It wasn't smoke."
"It was surgery."
Brooks froze.
"What kind of surgery?"
Lucas answered with two chilling words.
"Memory suppression."
The officers exchanged confused glances.
William laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
"I wish it were."
Proof
One of the technicians interrupted.
"Detective..."
"I found another file."
A folder hidden inside the computer system.
Its label simply read:
PROJECT MIRROR
Brooks opened it.
Medical documents filled the screen.
Psychological evaluations.
Neurological scans.
Medication schedules.
Then...
a photograph.
William.
Eight years old.
Lying unconscious in a hospital bed.
Standing beside him...
was Jonathan Sterling.
And next to Jonathan...
stood a man in a white lab coat.
His identification badge was visible.
Dr. Adrian Mercer
Below the image was a handwritten note.
Patient successfully suppressed. Subject no longer recalls siblings.
William staggered backward.
His hands began to shake uncontrollably.
"No..."
He whispered.
"My father would never..."
Lucas interrupted.
"He didn't approve it."
William looked toward the speaker.
"What?"
"He begged them to stop."
"Then why..."
"Because they threatened to kill you."
Isabella Arrives
The office door suddenly burst open.
Everyone reached for their weapons.
It wasn't an attacker.
It was Isabella.
Her elegant gown was torn.
Her makeup streaked by tears.
For the first time since the nightmare began...
she looked terrified.
"They're here."
Brooks aimed his pistol.
"Don't move."
She ignored him.
Looking only at William.
"You have to leave."
William stared coldly.
"You locked my son in a wall."
She nodded.
"I know."
"You lied to me for years."
"I know."
"You destroyed this family."
Tears rolled down her face.
"I tried to save what was left."
William's expression didn't soften.
"From who?"
She looked toward the security monitors.
Then whispered one name.
"The Council."
The Family Council
Brooks stepped closer.
"Tell us who they are."
"They're not a company."
"Not a board."
"They're older than Sterling Industries."
William frowned.
"They control the inheritance."
"They control judges."
"Politicians."
"Police."
"Banks."
"They decide who leads."
"And who disappears."
The room was silent.
Brooks asked the obvious question.
"How many members?"
Isabella swallowed.
"I've only ever met six."
Lucas's voice echoed again.
"There are nine."
Isabella's eyes widened.
"You know?"
"I've watched them for twenty-two years."
The Intruder
One of the monitors beeped.
Motion detected.
The man with William's face had reached the main staircase.
He still carried the black evidence box.
Police units flooded toward him from every direction.
North hallway.
South entrance.
Garden exit.
Every escape route was blocked.
Brooks watched the screen.
"We've got him."
The officers surrounded the suspect.
Weapons raised.
"Hands where we can see them!"
The man smiled.
Very calmly.
Then he placed the black evidence box on the floor.
Raised both hands.
And said...
"I surrender."
William frowned.
"That's it?"
Lucas shouted through the speaker.
"NO!"
"Don't let him..."
Too late.
The man pressed something hidden in his palm.
A tiny remote.
Click.
The black evidence box exploded.
Not with fire.
But with blinding white powder.
The hallway disappeared beneath a cloud.
Officers coughed violently.
Visibility dropped to zero.
By the time the powder settled...
the suspect was gone.
Only one thing remained where he had been standing.
A white envelope.
Brooks carefully picked it up.
Across the front, in elegant handwriting, were the words:
For William. Open Alone.
William hesitated.
Then broke the seal.
Inside...
was a single sheet of paper.
And an old Polaroid photograph.
The photograph showed three boys.
All three had William's face.
On the back, someone had written:
You were never an only child.
You were never even the original.
William's hands went numb.
The paper slipped from his fingers.
Brooks caught it before it hit the floor.
He read the first line aloud.
Then stopped.
His expression drained of color.
William looked at him.
"What is it?"
Brooks slowly lowered the page.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"It says..."
He looked directly into William's eyes.
May you like
"...your real name isn't William Sterling."
