CHAPTER 12 The Ninth Chair

The old man waited patiently.

No one answered.

The only sound inside the Chairman's Vault was the low hum of the servers.

William tightened his grip on Ethan's shoulder.

The boy instinctively hid behind him.

"You heard my question," the old man said.

His voice was calm.

Cultured.

Almost grandfatherly.

"Will you surrender the child..."

"...or will another generation bleed?"

Detective Brooks stepped forward, weapon raised.

"Police."

"Hands where I can see them."

The elderly man smiled politely.

"You may call me..."

He paused.

"...Mr. Ashcroft."

"I don't care what your name is."

Brooks replied.

"You're under arrest."

Ashcroft chuckled softly.

"I've been declared dead three times."

"I assure you..."

"...it never lasts."

The Nine

William counted.

Ashcroft.

Eight others standing behind him.

Nine people.

Lucas had been right.

"There are nine."

Ashcroft noticed William's gaze.

"Observation has always been your greatest strength."

William frowned.

"You know me?"

Ashcroft answered without hesitation.

"I knew you before you knew yourself."

One of the women behind Ashcroft stepped forward.

Elegant.

Silver-haired.

Perhaps in her sixties.

She looked at Ethan with unsettling warmth.

"My..."

She smiled.

"He's even taller than the last photographs."

William's blood ran cold.

She had been watching Ethan.

For years.

The Empty Guns

Brooks didn't wait any longer.

"Last warning."

Ashcroft sighed.

"Very well."

Brooks pulled the trigger.

Click.

Nothing.

He frowned.

Pulled again.

Click.

Every tactical officer tried their weapons.

One after another.

Nothing.

Empty.

An officer quickly removed his magazine.

It was gone.

His pistol had somehow been unloaded.

"When..."

Brooks whispered.

Ashcroft answered.

"While you were chasing Mercer."

He gently folded his hands.

"You've spent tonight pursuing shadows."

Lucas Appears

A voice echoed from behind the Council.

"Not all shadows."

Everyone turned.

Lucas stepped from another hidden passage.

His clothes were torn.

One sleeve stained with blood.

But he stood on his own.

Alive.

William stared.

For the first time...

He saw his brother with his own eyes.

Lucas looked older than his age.

Years of hiding had carved deep lines into his face.

Yet...

The resemblance was unmistakable.

The same gray eyes.

The same Sterling jaw.

William took one hesitant step forward.

"Lucas..."

Lucas smiled faintly.

"I wondered..."

"...if I'd ever hear you say my name again."

William's eyes filled with tears.

"I..."

He didn't know what to say.

Twenty-two stolen years separated them.

Lucas spared him the burden.

"We'll have time later."

He looked toward Ashcroft.

"If we survive."

The Chairman Speaks

Ashcroft slowly applauded.

"Remarkable."

He looked at Lucas.

"You've become everything Jonathan feared."

Lucas met his gaze without flinching.

"You murdered my father."

Ashcroft shook his head.

"No."

"Jonathan murdered the system."

"And the system corrected itself."

William's fists clenched.

"You call killing children..."

"...a system?"

Ashcroft's expression didn't change.

"I call it stability."

He gestured toward the portraits lining the walls.

"Empires survive because emotion never outranks succession."

William spat back.

"My son isn't your heir."

Ashcroft smiled.

"He already is."

Ethan's Question

Everyone expected shouting.

Instead...

Ethan quietly stepped forward.

He looked up at Ashcroft.

"Can I ask something?"

William immediately tried to pull him back.

"Ethan..."

"It's okay."

Ashcroft crouched to Ethan's height.

"What would you like to know?"

The little boy's voice trembled.

"If I said yes..."

"...would you stop hurting people?"

Silence.

Even the Council members lowered their eyes.

Ashcroft answered honestly.

"No."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Then..."

He took William's hand.

"My answer is no too."

Ashcroft sighed.

"A pity."

The Ledger's Secret

Lucas hurried to the Book of Heirs.

He flipped rapidly through the pages.

"William."

"What?"

"The answers aren't here."

"What do you mean?"

"This book records heirs."

"It doesn't record bloodlines."

William frowned.

"There must be another ledger."

Ashcroft smiled again.

"There is."

Lucas looked up sharply.

"Where?"

Ashcroft tapped his own chest.

"I memorized every name."

The Betrayal

Without warning...

One member of the Council collapsed.

A sharp crack echoed through the vault.

Everyone turned.

The silver-haired woman stared in horror.

Blood spread across her shoulder.

She hadn't been shot by the police.

She had been shot...

By another Council member.

Chaos erupted.

Ashcroft's composure vanished for the first time.

"What have you done?"

The shooter lowered his pistol.

"We're finished."

He looked directly at Brooks.

"My name is Richard Vale."

"I've served the Council for thirty-one years."

He tossed his weapon across the floor.

"I'm done."

Ashcroft's voice turned icy.

"You know the penalty."

Richard nodded.

"I do."

He looked toward William.

"They lied to all of us."

"What do you mean?"

Richard pointed toward Ethan.

"The boy was never the objective."

Everyone froze.

William frowned.

"Then who was?"

Richard slowly turned...

Pointing directly at Lucas.

Ashcroft closed his eyes.

Too late.

Richard spoke the words he had hidden for decades.

"The true heir..."

"...was always Lucas."

The room fell silent.

William looked at his brother.

Lucas didn't deny it.

He simply lowered his head.

Ashcroft whispered,

"I told you..."

"...history repeats itself."

Lucas finally looked up.

His eyes were full of pain.

"I never ran away for twenty-two years..."

He looked at William.

"...because I was hiding."

A long pause.

Then he finished the sentence.

May you like

"...I was protecting you."
