CHAPTER 11 The Vault of the Living

Lucas didn't move.
He stood frozen in the doorway of the Chairman's Vault, staring into the darkness beyond the massive steel door.
His face, usually calm even under pressure, had gone completely white.
The live camera captured only his back.
Then...
He whispered again.
"They're... all still alive."
The transmission abruptly cut to static.
Back to the Mansion
"Move!"
Detective Brooks didn't hesitate.
Within seconds, the tactical team was racing back through the underground corridors toward the elevator.
William followed, his thoughts spinning.
Alive?
Who was alive?
Lucas had believed Lily was dead.
Jonathan was buried.
The hidden rooms beneath the mansion had been empty.
So who was inside the vault?
Mercer remained surprisingly calm as officers handcuffed him.
"You'll never reach it in time."
Brooks shoved him toward another team.
"Take him into custody."
Mercer smiled.
"You think arresting me ends this?"
"No."
Brooks replied.
"But it's a start."
The Silent Mansion
When the convoy returned to the Sterling estate, something felt wrong.
The music had stopped.
The flashing police lights painted the mansion in streaks of blue and red.
But...
There were no voices.
No guests.
No servants.
No officers standing guard.
William frowned.
"Where is everyone?"
One abandoned patrol car sat with its driver's door hanging open.
Its emergency lights still flashed.
The radio hissed with static.
An untouched cup of coffee rested on the hood.
Still warm.
Brooks slowly drew his pistol.
"Something happened."
The Grand Ballroom
They entered through the front doors.
The ballroom looked exactly as they had left it.
Champagne glasses still covered the tables.
Half-eaten desserts remained untouched.
A violin lay on the stage.
Yet the room was empty.
It looked as though hundreds of people had simply...
vanished.
One officer noticed a shoe near the dance floor.
A woman's high heel.
Another found a police radio.
Still transmitting.
"...Unit Three, respond..."
Only static answered.
William's heartbeat quickened.
"This doesn't make sense."
A Trail Upstairs
A forensic officer pointed toward the marble staircase.
"There."
Tiny drops of blood.
Fresh.
Leading upward.
The team followed.
First floor.
Second floor.
Third floor.
The blood trail ended at a wall.
Solid oak paneling.
No visible door.
William ran his hands across the surface.
Nothing.
Then Ethan stepped forward.
Quietly.
"They hide everything behind walls."
Everyone looked at him.
The boy reached toward an antique wall sconce.
He turned it.
Click.
The panel slid aside.
Beyond it stretched a narrow corridor.
Exactly like the one seen on the security camera.
At the end...
The Chairman's Vault.
Its heavy steel door stood open.
Inside the Vault
The tactical team entered first.
Weapons raised.
The room beyond wasn't a vault filled with gold.
It was a private archive.
Rows of filing cabinets.
Shelves of videotapes.
Thousands of photographs.
Computer servers.
And...
Portraits.
Dozens of framed portraits.
Every Sterling chairman.
Every heir.
Every generation.
William slowly walked past them.
Then stopped.
One portrait wasn't old.
It had been painted recently.
It showed...
Ethan.
Wearing an elegant black suit.
Standing alone.
Beneath the frame was a brass plaque.
Chairman Designate
William stared in disbelief.
"Ethan?"
Brooks examined the wall.
"These are succession portraits."
William tore Ethan's portrait from the wall.
"What kind of sick game is this?"
The frame shattered on the floor.
Behind it...
Was another hidden compartment.
Inside rested a thick leather ledger.
Its title was stamped in gold.
The Book of Heirs
The Book
Brooks carefully opened the first page.
Each chapter listed a generation.
A single child circled in red.
The chosen heir.
Beside every other sibling...
One word.
Removed.
William turned page after page.
Names.
Dates.
Photographs.
Every generation repeated the same horrifying pattern.
One heir remained.
The others disappeared.
Not accidents.
Not kidnappings.
A system.
Centuries old.
Then...
William reached his own page.
His photograph.
Lucas.
Lily.
Three children.
Only William's picture was circled.
Lucas and Lily were stamped:
Removed.
William turned the page.
Ethan's photograph.
Circled.
No other children listed.
Below it...
Someone had written in fresh ink.
Transition pending.
The Basement Alarm
Suddenly every light inside the vault turned red.
A mechanical alarm echoed throughout the mansion.
The computer servers came to life.
One by one, their monitors lit up.
A prerecorded video automatically began playing.
Jonathan Sterling appeared on the screen.
Older.
Weaker.
Looking directly into the camera.
"If this recording has activated..."
"...then someone has opened the Book."
William stepped closer.
His father's eyes filled with sorrow.
"I'm sorry, son."
"I failed."
William whispered,
"Father..."
Jonathan continued.
"The Council will come now."
Brooks frowned.
"Come?"
"They're already here."
Jonathan looked straight into the camera.
"They have always attended every Sterling gala."
William's stomach tightened.
The guests.
The senators.
The investors.
The board members.
Jonathan spoke one final warning.
"Never mistake them for visitors."
"They don't visit this house..."
"They own it."
At that exact moment...
A slow clap echoed from the doorway.
Clap.
Clap.
Clap.
Everyone spun around.
An elderly gentleman in an immaculate navy tuxedo stood there, flanked by eight elegantly dressed men and women.
None carried weapons.
None looked frightened.
They simply smiled.
The old man removed his white gloves and bowed politely.
"Good evening, Mr. Sterling."
William instinctively stepped in front of Ethan.
"Who are you?"
The old man's smile widened.
"I've waited twenty-eight years to ask you a question."
He glanced at Ethan.
Then back at William.
His eyes were cold.
"Will you surrender the boy..."
May you like
"...or shall history repeat itself?"
