CHAPTER 14 The Choice That Broke a Mother

The chamber fell deathly silent.

Mercer's words hung in the air like poison.

"Your mother gave you to us willingly."

William took one slow step toward him.

"No."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

"No..."

He took another step.

"...you're lying."

Mercer didn't flinch.

"I've lied about many things."

"But not this."

William grabbed Mercer by the front of his white coat.

"You stole me."

"I believed that too."

Mercer answered quietly.

"Until the day she signed the papers."

The Document

Mercer nodded toward an old oak cabinet standing in the corner of the Founders' Chamber.

"The proof is inside."

Brooks motioned for a forensic officer.

The cabinet was unlocked.

Inside rested dozens of leather-bound files.

Each marked with a family name.

One folder carried a simple label:

HAYES

Brooks opened it carefully.

The first page contained hospital records.

The second...

A custody agreement.

Signed twenty-eight years earlier.

At the bottom of the page...

A signature.

Sarah Hayes

William's knees weakened.

The signature looked authentic.

The ink had faded naturally.

The fingerprints matched.

Everything appeared genuine.

William whispered,

"...Why?"

Mercer looked at him with something that almost resembled pity.

"Turn the page."

A Mother's Letter

Folded inside the file was a handwritten letter.

The paper had been stained by old tears.

Brooks handed it to William.

His hands trembled as he unfolded it.

My sweet Daniel,

If one day you read this, I hope you'll hate me.

Because hating me means you're alive.

The doctors say your heart is failing.

They say you won't survive another month without treatment.

I don't have the money.

I sold our house.

I sold your father's truck.

I borrowed from everyone I knew.

It still wasn't enough.

Then a man came to me.

He promised to save you.

He said I'd never see you again.

I signed anyway.

Because burying my son would have hurt more than losing him.

If you grow up believing I abandoned you...

Please keep believing it.

It's easier than knowing the truth.

I have loved you every day since the moment you were born.

Love always,

Mom

William couldn't breathe.

The words blurred behind tears.

"I..."

His voice broke.

"She..."

Mercer finished the sentence for him.

"She didn't sell you."

"She sacrificed everything to keep you alive."

Jonathan's Conflicity

Lucas frowned.

"Then why didn't Father return him once he learned the truth?"

Mercer sighed.

"Because by then..."

"Daniel had become William."

Jonathan had tried.

Mercer explained.

But Daniel, barely two years old, no longer recognized his birth mother.

Sarah had visited once in secret.

The child cried for Jonathan instead.

She left the room in tears.

And never returned.

Not because she didn't love him.

Because she believed another goodbye would destroy him.

William buried his face in his hands.

For twenty-eight years...

He had unknowingly lived the life another child should have lived.

The Final Recording

One of the technicians called out.

"Detective!"

"I found another file."

Unlike the previous videos, this one had today's date.

Recorded only six hours earlier.

The screen lit up.

To everyone's surprise...

The person speaking wasn't Jonathan.

Or Mercer.

It was Sarah Hayes.

Older now.

Gray streaks in her hair.

But unmistakably the same woman from the photograph.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If this reaches you..."

"...then Mercer finally told you."

William froze.

She knew.

She had been alive all along.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I asked him to wait."

"To tell you only if the Council was destroyed."

She smiled sadly.

"I wanted you to have one normal life."

The Truth About Mercer

Sarah continued.

"I know you'll hate Dr. Mercer."

"But before you judge him..."

"Know this."

"He broke every rule they gave him."

"He smuggled letters."

"He sent me photographs."

"He told me every birthday that you were safe."

Mercer slowly lowered his head.

"I couldn't bring you home."

He whispered.

"But I could make sure she never stopped knowing you were alive."

Brooks stared at him.

"You still kidnapped a child."

Mercer nodded.

"I did."

"And I deserve prison."

He looked at William.

"But not before I finish what Jonathan and I started."

Ashcroft Makes His Move

A sharp metallic click echoed through the chamber.

Everyone turned.

Ashcroft had quietly stepped toward the center of the circle of stone chairs.

He pressed his palm against the Sterling chair.

The floor began to vibrate.

"No..." Lucas whispered.

"He found it."

A circular section of stone slowly rose from the center of the chamber.

On it rested a small black box.

Ashcroft opened it.

Inside...

Not gold.

Not jewels.

A single silver ring.

Engraved with nine intertwined crests.

Ashcroft lifted it reverently.

"The Founder's Seal."

Lucas stepped forward.

"If he wears it..."

Brooks frowned.

"What happens?"

Lucas answered quietly.

"The Council chooses a new Chairman."

Ashcroft smiled.

"And tradition will continue."

He slipped the ring onto his finger.

Nothing happened.

His smile faded.

He frowned.

Then looked toward William.

The ring slowly slid off his finger...

And rolled across the stone floor.

Stopping...

Directly at William's feet.

The chamber fell silent.

One by one...

Every Council member turned toward him.

The oldest woman whispered in disbelief,

"It chose him..."

Ashcroft's face turned pale.

"No..."

"Impossible."

Mercer closed his eyes.

Jonathan's plan had worked.

The Founder's Seal had rejected the old order.

It had chosen...

Not Ethan.

Not Lucas.

Not Ashcroft.

But Daniel Hayes...

The child who had belonged to none of the nine families.

William slowly bent down.

His trembling fingers reached toward the silver ring.

The instant he touched it...

A hidden door behind the stone chairs burst open.

A woman in her early fifties stumbled inside, escorted by two armed guards who had clearly been overpowered.

Her eyes swept desperately across the room...

Until they landed on William.

She dropped to her knees.

Tears streamed down her face.

With a trembling voice, she whispered the words she had waited twenty-eight years to say:

"Daniel..."

William's heart stopped.

He had never seen her before.

Yet for reasons he couldn't explain...

One word escaped his lips before he could stop it.

May you like

"...Mom?"
