CHAPTER 13 The Last Testament

"I was protecting you."
Lucas's words echoed through the Chairman's Vault.
William could only stare.
For years, he had imagined his missing brother as a victim.
A ghost.
A memory.
Now the man stood only a few feet away...
admitting he had stayed hidden by choice.
"You could have come back," William whispered.
Lucas smiled sadly.
"I tried."
"When?"
"The night Father died."
William's eyes widened.
"What?"
"I reached the mansion."
"I saw the ambulances."
"I watched them carry Father's body away."
Lucas looked at Ashcroft.
"And I saw who walked out of his study."
Ashcroft didn't deny it.
"You."
Lucas nodded.
"You weren't mourning."
"You were checking whether Father had left any evidence."
Jonathan's Final Gamble
Lucas walked to one of the servers.
He inserted a tiny brass key into a hidden slot.
The machine hummed to life.
Brooks frowned.
"You knew this was here?"
Lucas nodded.
"Father showed me."
A hidden drawer slid open.
Inside...
A single VHS tape.
Unlike everything else in the vault...
it had no label.
Only three handwritten words.
For My Sons
William's throat tightened.
"My sons..."
Lucas whispered.
"He knew."
Brooks found an old VHS player stored beneath the cabinet.
Minutes later...
The tape began to play.
Twenty-Two Years Earlier
Jonathan Sterling appeared on screen.
Younger.
Healthier.
Behind him sat three children.
William.
Lucas.
Lily.
They were laughing.
Running around his office.
William stared at the screen.
Tears blurred his vision.
"I remember..."
he whispered.
Fragments.
Not complete memories.
Just flashes.
Lily hiding beneath Jonathan's desk.
Lucas teaching him chess.
A birthday cake.
A lullaby.
His memories were coming back.
Jonathan looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then at least one of my children survived."
He smiled sadly.
"I pray it is all three."
William covered his mouth.
Jonathan continued.
"I have spent years pretending to obey the Council."
Ashcroft folded his arms.
Expression unreadable.
"But I never intended to surrender any of my children."
Jonathan reached beneath his desk.
He removed a leather folder.
"This..."
"...is the true Sterling inheritance."
William frowned.
"Not money?"
Lucas shook his head.
"I told you."
Jonathan opened the folder.
Inside...
No bank accounts.
No stock certificates.
Only land deeds.
Maps.
And legal agreements.
The Truth About Sterling Industries
Jonathan explained calmly.
"The Council believes Sterling Industries is the empire."
"They're wrong."
"The company is only the mask."
He unfolded a century-old map.
Beneath the Sterling estate...
A vast underground reservoir stretched for miles.
Jonathan pointed to it.
"This land sits above the largest untouched freshwater reserve in the eastern United States."
Brooks looked stunned.
Jonathan continued.
"One day..."
"It will be worth more than oil."
Ashcroft's eyes narrowed.
Even he seemed surprised.
"You never knew?" Lucas whispered.
Ashcroft remained silent.
Jonathan smiled into the camera.
"I spent thirty years letting them believe they controlled my fortune."
"They never realized..."
"I moved the real inheritance somewhere else."
The Real Heir
Jonathan looked straight into the camera.
"If Lucas survived..."
"He inherits the land."
"If Lily survived..."
"She inherits the trust."
"If William survived..."
"He inherits the company."
William frowned.
"Three heirs?"
Jonathan nodded.
"One empire."
"Three guardians."
"No child rules alone."
Ashcroft's face darkened.
"You destroyed the succession."
Jonathan smiled.
"I corrected it."
Ashcroft's Rage
The tape ended.
Silence filled the vault.
Ashcroft slowly removed his gloves.
For the first time...
His calm mask cracked.
"You arrogant fool."
He whispered at the blank television.
"You destroyed three hundred years of order."
Lucas stepped forward.
"No."
"He ended three hundred years of murder."
Ashcroft laughed.
"You still don't understand."
William frowned.
"Then explain."
Ashcroft looked around the room.
At every Council member.
At every portrait.
Then at Ethan.
"You think this was ever about inheritance?"
"No."
"It was about control."
The Hidden Chamber Opens
Before anyone could respond...
A deep mechanical rumble shook the vault.
The floor trembled.
One wall slowly split apart.
Behind it...
Another room.
Smaller.
Older.
At its center stood nine carved stone chairs arranged in a circle.
Each chair bore a family crest.
Different families.
Different empires.
Ashcroft whispered almost reverently,
"The Founders' Chamber."
Lucas stared.
"It actually exists..."
Brooks frowned.
"What is this place?"
Ashcroft smiled.
"The room where nations are purchased."
William's eyes narrowed.
"What are you talking about?"
Ashcroft gestured toward the chairs.
"Every century..."
"Nine families choose who will control the next."
The Sterlings had never been alone.
They had been one of nine dynasties.
Banks.
Shipping.
Defense.
Energy.
Media.
Technology.
Politics.
Medicine.
Finance.
The Council wasn't just controlling one company.
It had spent generations quietly steering governments, markets, and elections from the shadows.
Brooks muttered,
"My God..."
The Final Name
Lucas walked toward the center chair.
Carved into the back...
The Sterling crest.
Beneath it...
A brass nameplate.
It didn't read Jonathan Sterling.
Nor William Sterling.
It read:
Reserved for Daniel Hayes
William froze.
His heart stopped.
Ashcroft smiled again.
"You finally understand."
William looked at the chair.
Then at Mercer, who had just been escorted into the chamber by officers from another entrance.
The old doctor wasn't struggling.
He was smiling.
Mercer quietly spoke the sentence that shattered everything they thought they had uncovered.
"I never stole you..."
He looked directly into William.
May you like
"...because your mother gave you to us willingly."
