Chapter 9 - The countdown appeared on every monitor.09:57.

09:56.

09:55.

Grant's father stood calmly in the center of the room.

“You've spent your entire life believing the Whitmore family protects this city.”

He smiled.

“We own it.”

Grant aimed at him.

“Stop this.”

“You don't understand what the Archive contains.”

“Then explain.”

His father pointed toward the monitors.

“Every secret.”

Every monitor changed.

Names appeared.

Judges.

Senators.

Police chiefs.

Billionaires.

Even members of Grant's organization.

All compromised.

All recorded.

Grant stared.

“If this gets released…”

“Exactly.”

Panic.

Riots.

Collapse.

The city would tear itself apart.

Grant's father stepped closer.

“Give me Lily.”

“No.”

“You can't stop the activation.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“You can.”

Everyone turned.

She held the silver pendant.

Grant stared.

“You have the key.”

Evelyn nodded.

“But it requires three people.”

“Who?”

She pointed.

“Lily.”

“Grant.”

“And Atlas.”

Grant frowned.

“Why Atlas?”

“Because the Archive was designed to recognize trust.”

His father laughed.

“Your mother always loved romantic ideas.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“It was never romantic.”

She looked at Lily.

“It was human.”

The countdown continued.

08:41.

Grant crouched beside Lily.

“What do I do?”

“Hold her hand.”

Grant did.

Atlas stepped closer.

Evelyn placed the pendant in Lily's palm.

Nothing happened.

Then Lily touched Atlas.

A low hum filled the room.

The monitors flickered.

Grant's father's smile disappeared.

“No.”

The screens went black.

Then one word appeared.

VERIFY.

A voice asked:

“Who protects the child?”

Atlas barked.

“Who does the child trust?”

Lily pointed at Grant.

“Daddy.”

The voice asked:

“Who does the father trust?”

Grant looked at Atlas.

The dog met his eyes.

Grant whispered:

“You.”

The room shook.

The Archive opened.

But not in the building.

Every monitor displayed a map.

Coordinates appeared.

Not underground.

Not in the city.

In Grant's childhood home.

His father's face went white.

“No.”

Grant turned.

“What?”

The old man backed away.

“It's impossible.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“Your mistake was assuming the Archive belonged to you.”

The coordinates pulsed.

Grant understood.

His mother had hidden it.

In their old home.

The house where she died.

Grant looked toward his father.

“You said it wasn't there.”

“I lied.”

Grant's father suddenly pulled a gun.

He fired.

Atlas lunged.

The shot missed Grant and shattered the monitor.

Grant tackled his father.

They crashed into the floor.

His father fought with surprising strength.

“You have no idea what you've done!”

Grant punched him.

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“She was never yours!”

Grant froze.

His father shouted:

“She belongs to the Vane bloodline.”

Grant struck him again.

“You don't decide that.”

Evelyn screamed.

“Grant!”

The countdown hit zero.

Nothing exploded.

Nothing happened.

Then every phone in the room rang simultaneously.

The Archive had gone public.

Not the contents.

A single message.

THE TRUTH IS COMING.

Grant's father stared in horror.

“What did you do?”

Grant looked at Evelyn.

“What did you do?”

She shook her head.

“Not me.”

Lily stepped forward.

She pointed at one monitor.

A video had appeared.

Grant's mother.

Alive.

Standing in a dark room.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Grant.”

His world stopped.

“If you're watching this, I'm alive.”

Grant whispered:

“Mom?”

She continued.

“I know what your father did.”

“I know what the Black Veil did.”

“And I know what they will do next.”

She leaned closer.

“But there is one thing none of them know.”

A pause.

“The Archive is not the weapon.”

Grant stared.

“It is the witness.”

His mother smiled sadly.

“And Lily is the witness's keeper.”

The screen went black.

A new message appeared.

THE FINAL LOCK OPENS IN 72 HOURS.

Grant's father whispered:

“No.”

Evelyn looked at Grant.

“Now they will come for all of us.”

Outside, dozens of engines roared to life.

A convoy was approaching the sanatorium.

Grant grabbed Lily.

Atlas stood beside them.

Claire looked through the window.

Black cars.

Dozens.

She turned.

“Grant…”

May you like

He already knew.

“The war has started.”
