Chapter 3 - The Whitmore vault was buried forty feet beneath the mansion. It had no windows.

No electronic access.

No ordinary key.

Grant entered alone.

Claire watched from behind the security glass.

“Are you sure?”

Grant didn't answer.

He placed the silver pendant against the scanner.

Nothing happened.

He turned it over.

There was a tiny groove on the back.

A fingerprint reader.

Grant pressed his thumb.

The vault door opened.

Inside was a single black box.

No gold.

No cash.

No weapons.

Just a black box.

Grant carried it into the security room.

Every camera was shut down.

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Hundreds.

Claire.

Lily.

Grant.

Atlas.

Taken over three years.

Grant picked up one.

Lily newborn.

Claire holding her outside a hospital.

Another.

Lily sleeping.

Another.

Atlas watching Lily through a window.

Grant's blood ran cold.

“These were taken here.”

Claire stared at the photographs.

“They've been watching us.”

Grant found a folder labeled:

PROJECT LILY.

His hands tightened.

He opened it.

The first page contained a single sentence.

Subject survived.

He turned the page.

Subject shows inherited neurological recognition.

Another.

Subject responds to Atlas.

Then:

The dog recognizes the bloodline.

Grant stopped.

“The bloodline?”

Claire looked away.

“What are you hiding?”

“I don't know.”

Grant slammed the folder down.

“You've known something.”

Claire flinched.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Three years.”

“Tell me.”

Claire started crying.

“Lily's father wasn't who you think.”

Grant froze.

“I never knew Lily's father.”

Claire nodded.

“You weren't supposed to.”

“Who was he?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know his real name.”

Grant stared.

“Then what do you know?”

Claire whispered:

“He worked for your father.”

A strange silence filled the room.

“Was he a guard?”

“No.”

“A driver?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Claire looked at the folder.

“Your father's intelligence officer.”

Grant's expression changed.

“My father had no intelligence officer.”

“He did.”

“What was his name?”

Claire hesitated.

“Elias Vane.”

Grant took one step back.

Elias Vane.

A ghost.

A man rumored to have died fourteen years ago.

His father's most trusted operative.

The man who supposedly betrayed the Whitmore family and vanished.

Grant had spent years searching for him.

Never finding a body.

Never finding proof.

Now Claire was telling him Elias had been Lily's father.

A sharp sound came from the vault.

Something hit the floor.

Everyone turned.

Atlas.

The dog stood in the doorway.

But Lily wasn't with him.

Grant ran toward him.

Atlas grabbed the edge of his coat and pulled.

“Where is she?”

Atlas growled.

Then ran.

Grant followed.

Through the corridor.

Down the stairs.

Into the old underground tunnel beneath the estate.

Atlas stopped beside a brick wall.

He scratched at it.

Grant understood.

He kicked the wall.

Once.

Twice.

The bricks collapsed.

Behind them was another passage.

A hidden tunnel.

Grant stared.

“Dad built this?”

Atlas entered.

Grant followed.

They emerged beneath an abandoned church three miles away.

Waiting inside was a man.

Old.

Bleeding.

Grant raised his gun.

The man lifted both hands.

“You've grown.”

Grant stared.

“Elias.”

Elias smiled faintly.

“Hello, Grant.”

Grant's gun rose.

“You took Lily.”

“No.”

“Then where is she?”

Elias's expression changed.

“Someone else took her.”

“Who?”

“Your father's enemies.”

“You mean the Black Veil.”

Elias nodded.

“They were never dead.”

Grant lowered the gun slightly.

“Why does Atlas respond to Lily?”

Elias looked toward the dog.

“Because Atlas knew her mother.”

Grant frowned.

“What?”

Elias stepped closer.

“Three years ago, your father gave Claire a child.”

Grant stared.

“That's impossible.”

“Not Claire's child.”

He pointed at the pendant.

“That's the child's mother's family symbol.”

Grant looked at Claire.

She had entered the room behind him.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Who was Lily's mother?”

Elias went silent.

Then a gunshot exploded through the church.

Elias jerked backward.

Blood spread across his chest.

Grant caught him before he hit the floor.

“Who was Lily's mother?”

Elias coughed.

“Ask…”

He struggled to breathe.

“Ask your father.”

“He's dead!”

Elias smiled faintly.

“No.”

Grant froze.

Elias whispered:

“Your father never died.”

Another gunshot shattered a stained-glass window.

Atlas lunged toward the opening.

Grant dragged Elias behind cover.

“Where is Lily?” Grant shouted.

Elias grabbed his wrist.

“She's not being held for ransom.”

“What then?”

“They're trying to wake something.”

Grant's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Elias looked toward the tunnel.

“Your father's last secret.”

Then his hand fell.

Dead.

Grant stood frozen.

His father was alive.

Lily was missing.

The Black Veil was operating inside his estate.

And someone had spent three years watching a little girl because they believed she could unlock something buried in the Whitmore bloodline.

Then Grant noticed blood on Atlas's fur.

Not his own.

Someone else.

A tiny red stain.

Grant touched it.

“Lily.”

Atlas growled.

Then ran toward the church doors.

Grant followed.

Outside, a black car sped away.

The rear window opened for one second.

A small face appeared.

Lily.

Her eyes found Grant.

She pressed her hand against the glass.

May you like

And mouthed one word.

RUN.
