Chapter 14 - Grant couldn't hear anything after that. Not the alarms.

Not the gunfire.

Not Claire crying.

He stared at the screen.

“You are the Archive.”

The sentence repeated in his mind.

His mother continued.

“Your father believed a human mind could preserve information better than any machine.”

“He experimented on you before you were born.”

Grant's hands began shaking.

“He altered your memory pathways.”

“He implanted the first Archive.”

Claire whispered:

“No.”

Grant looked at her.

“Lily.”

She grabbed his hand.

“You're still her father.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That's all that matters.”

But Grant could feel something happening inside his head.

Memories flashed.

A blue room.

A needle.

His father.

His mother crying.

Atlas barking.

A child's scream.

Then numbers.

Thousands of numbers.

Names.

Faces.

Locations.

Grant fell to his knees.

The Archive was waking.

Everything stored inside it was pouring into him.

Claire knelt beside him.

“Grant!”

He couldn't breathe.

“Stop it.”

Evelyn grabbed the console.

“It's too late.”

Lily touched Grant's forehead.

“Daddy.”

His eyes opened.

The chaos stopped.

Silence.

Grant stared at her.

The Archive had recognized her.

The original memory source.

The system shut down.

Every monitor turned black.

Grant slowly stood.

“I'm okay.”

Evelyn stared.

“How?”

Grant looked at Lily.

“She stopped it.”

His mother had been wrong.

Grant wasn't the final Archive.

Lily was.

But Grant was its guardian.

The Council burst into the chamber.

Dozens of guns.

Their leader walked forward.

An elegant woman in white.

Grant recognized her.

She had appeared in hundreds of files.

Senator.

Judge.

Philanthropist.

The woman behind the Council.

She smiled.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Grant pointed his gun.

“Give me one reason not to kill you.”

She laughed.

“Because I know who killed Evelyn's father.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You?”

The woman shook her head.

“Your grandmother.”

Everyone froze.

Grant's mother had lied again.

The Council leader continued.

“Your grandmother created the Black Veil.”

“She turned it against your father.”

“She manipulated the Archive.”

“And she used Lily as bait.”

Grant looked at his mother.

She was standing in the doorway.

Alive.

Bleeding.

His heart stopped.

“You're alive.”

His mother smiled.

“Of course.”

Claire whispered:

“You said she died.”

Grant's mother laughed.

“I needed you to believe that.”

Grant's rage burned.

“You used me.”

“I protected you.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You kidnapped Lily.”

“I hid her.”

“You destroyed my life.”

His mother looked at Lily.

“I saved hers.”

Lily stepped forward.

“No.”

Everyone went silent.

The little girl looked at her grandmother.

“You hurt Mommy.”

Her grandmother's face changed.

Lily continued.

“You hurt Daddy.”

She pointed at Grant.

“And you hurt Atlas.”

Atlas stood beside her.

Growling.

The woman stared at the dog.

For the first time, fear entered her eyes.

Lily walked closer.

“You're bad.”

The room fell silent.

Then Atlas barked once.

A gunshot exploded.

Grant pushed Lily down.

Bullets ripped through the room.

The Council leader fell.

The guards fired back.

Chaos.

Grant grabbed Lily.

“RUN!”

They fled through the tunnel.

Claire and Evelyn followed.

Atlas stayed behind for a second.

Then turned.

His eyes locked on Grant.

Go.

Grant understood.

The dog would hold them off.

“No!”

Atlas barked.

Grant grabbed Lily and ran.

The tunnel shook.

An explosion behind them.

They emerged outside.

The old house was burning.

Grant turned.

“Atlas!”

Nothing.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“We have to go.”

“No.”

“Grant!”

A second explosion.

The house collapsed.

Grant stood frozen.

Lily began crying.

“Atlas.”

Three seconds.

Five.

Ten.

Then something moved in the smoke.

A black shape.

A wounded dog stepped through the flames.

Lily screamed.

“ATLAS!”

He limped toward her.

She ran.

Atlas lowered his head.

She hugged him.

Grant dropped to his knees.

For the first time, Atlas allowed Grant to touch his fur.

Then the dog's body stiffened.

He looked beyond Grant.

Everyone turned.

A convoy approached.

One vehicle stopped.

The rear door opened.

A man stepped out.

Elias Vane.

Alive.

Grant stared.

“You died.”

Elias smiled.

“Not this time.”

He looked at Lily.

Then at Grant.

“The city has fallen.”

Grant frowned.

“What?”

Elias pointed toward the horizon.

Smoke was rising from downtown.

Police sirens screamed.

News broadcasts were reporting mass arrests.

Government buildings were being evacuated.

The Archive had exposed everything.

But Elias's voice was calm.

“This was never about controlling the city.”

“Then what was it about?”

Elias looked at Lily.

“It was about finding the next keeper.”

Lily whispered:

“Who?”

Elias smiled.

“You.”

Then he looked at Grant.

“No.”

He pointed to Lily.

“Her.”

The wind stopped.

May you like

Elias lowered his voice.

“And they are coming.”
