Chapter 13 - Grant couldn't move. The chapel seemed to shrink around him.

Two Lily's.

One standing beside him.

One hidden underground.

The impossible became terrifyingly real.

Evelyn stared at the child.

“Lily.”

The girl looked at her.

“Mommy.”

Evelyn went pale.

Claire whispered:

“What happened?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“The Archive duplicated memory patterns.”

Grant's voice hardened.

“Explain.”

“When Lily was born, the system copied part of her neural imprint.”

“Copied?”

“Yes.”

“For three years, the Archive has been growing another version.”

Grant stared into the passage.

“A memory copy.”

“Not a human.”

“A consciousness.”

The voice from below spoke again.

“Daddy.”

Grant stepped forward.

Claire grabbed him.

“Don't.”

He looked at her.

“I have to.”

He entered the passage.

Atlas followed.

The stairs went deeper.

Thirty feet.

Fifty.

Seventy.

At the bottom was a massive laboratory.

Glass chambers lined the walls.

Inside were sleeping people.

Grant stopped.

“What is this?”

Evelyn looked around.

“The experiments.”

“Whose?”

“Your father's.”

Grant saw labels.

SUBJECT 01.

SUBJECT 02.

SUBJECT 03.

Then:

SUBJECT L.

He stepped closer.

A young woman lay inside.

He couldn't see her face.

He looked at Evelyn.

“Who is that?”

Evelyn stared.

“No.”

Grant pressed the control panel.

The glass chamber opened.

The woman inside woke.

Her eyes opened.

She looked exactly like Claire.

Grant stepped back.

Claire screamed.

“That isn't me.”

The woman sat upright.

A perfect copy.

Same face.

Same voice.

Same scars.

Same eyes.

The woman looked at Grant.

“Hello.”

Grant raised his gun.

“What are you?”

She smiled.

“I am the memory of the woman who gave birth to Lily.”

Claire shook violently.

“No.”

The copy looked at her.

“You forgot.”

Claire collapsed.

Evelyn whispered:

“The Archive created copies from memory patterns.”

Grant understood.

His father's obsession had gone beyond blackmail.

He had tried to preserve people.

Duplicate them.

Control them.

Replace them.

Then the lights turned red.

A warning sounded.

MEMORY PURGE INITIATED.

Evelyn shouted:

“Run!”

The laboratory doors opened.

Armed men entered.

Grant fired.

Atlas attacked.

Claire pulled Lily behind cover.

The copy of Claire stood motionless.

Then she walked toward Lily.

“Come with me.”

Grant aimed at her.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

The copy smiled.

“I'm her mother.”

Claire screamed:

“You're not!”

The copy touched Lily's cheek.

Lily didn't move.

Atlas growled.

Then Lily looked at the copy.

“You're scared.”

The copy froze.

Lily whispered:

“Because you don't know who you are.”

The copy stepped back.

Something changed in her expression.

A memory surfaced.

She began crying.

“I remember…”

“What?”

“The blue room.”

Claire stared.

The copy looked at her.

“I remember you.”

Claire's face crumpled.

“You're not real.”

The copy smiled sadly.

“I know.”

Then she pressed a button.

The entire laboratory began collapsing.

“What are you doing?” Grant shouted.

“Ending it.”

She looked at Lily.

“Protect her.”

Then the chamber exploded.

Grant shielded Lily.

Evelyn dragged Claire away.

Smoke filled the room.

When it cleared, the copy was gone.

So was the path behind her.

But Lily pointed toward a small doorway.

“There's another way.”

Grant looked.

A tiny metal door.

He opened it.

Inside was a room containing a single chair.

A camera.

And a monitor.

The screen showed Grant's mother.

She spoke directly to him.

“Grant.”

“I know you are here.”

“You need to choose.”

Two buttons appeared.

SAVE THE ARCHIVE.

DESTROY THE ARCHIVE.

His mother continued:

“If you destroy it, everyone whose memories are stored inside will be lost.”

“If you save it, the Council will control the city.”

Grant stared.

Thousands of lives.

Thousands of secrets.

Claire whispered:

“Don't let them decide.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“There's a third option.”

“What?”

“Give it to the people.”

Grant looked at her.

“Release everything.”

Evelyn nodded.

“All of it.”

Grant understood.

The corruption would be exposed.

But innocent people would also suffer.

He looked at Lily.

She touched his hand.

“Daddy.”

He knelt.

“What?”

She whispered:

“Tell them the truth.”

Grant closed his eyes.

Then pressed a hidden third symbol.

The entire Archive unlocked.

Every secret began transmitting.

The Council panicked.

Phones rang across the city.

News stations exploded into emergency broadcasts.

But one file remained locked.

A single file.

PROJECT WHITMORE.

Grant opened it.

His mother's photograph appeared.

Underneath:

ORIGIN: GRANT WHITMORE.

Grant stared.

A recording began.

His mother spoke:

“Grant, I need you to know the truth.”

“You were never born naturally.”

Grant went completely still.

“You were created as the first Archive vessel.”

Claire gasped.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

And Grant stared at the screen as his mother whispered:

May you like

“You are not my son.”

“You are the Archive.”
