Chapter 11 - The chamber doors locked.Grant pulled Lily against his chest.

“Stay behind me.”

A woman's footsteps echoed in the darkness.

Claire reached for the emergency lights.

Nothing.

Atlas growled.

Then a single spotlight appeared.

An elderly woman stood at the far end of the chamber.

Silver hair.

Black dress.

Calm smile.

Grant stared.

“Mother.”

She smiled.

“My son.”

Grant couldn't move.

His mother looked exactly as she had in his childhood memories.

Older.

But alive.

“You're dead.”

“So many people believed that.”

“Why?”

“Because disappearing was the only way to survive.”

Grant's voice shook with rage.

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You had years.”

“I was fighting a war you didn't know existed.”

Grant stepped forward.

“What war?”

She looked at Lily.

“This one.”

Lily buried her face against Grant.

His mother frowned.

“She doesn't know me.”

“You terrified her.”

“I never meant to.”

“Then stay away from her.”

His mother's eyes hardened.

“She is my blood.”

Grant stepped between them.

“She is my daughter.”

“Not by blood.”

Grant froze.

His mother looked at Claire.

“Tell him.”

Claire lowered her head.

Grant turned.

“What?”

Claire began crying.

“Lily's father was Elias Vane.”

Grant nodded slowly.

“I know.”

His mother smiled.

“But Elias wasn't her biological father.”

Silence.

Grant felt the world tilt.

“Then who?”

His mother looked at Grant.

“You.”

Claire's breath caught.

Grant stared.

“No.”

“You were used.”

“How?”

“Your father took your blood when you were unconscious as a child.”

Grant stepped back.

“What are you talking about?”

“The Vane line was infused with a rare genetic marker.”

“Your father believed you had inherited it.”

“He was wrong.”

“You did.”

Grant looked at Lily.

She was staring at him.

His mother continued.

“That's why the Archive responds to you.”

“That's why Atlas chose her.”

“That's why the Black Veil wants her.”

Grant shook his head.

“This isn't possible.”

His mother stepped closer.

“The truth is rarely kind.”

Suddenly Marcus fired at the ceiling.

“Everyone down!”

A sniper bullet struck the glass.

The chamber erupted into chaos.

Grant grabbed Lily.

Atlas attacked the doorway.

Claire ducked behind the stone wall.

Grant's mother remained standing.

Unmoved.

A bullet struck her shoulder.

Grant shouted:

“Mom!”

She fell.

Grant ran toward her.

She grabbed his wrist.

“Don't.”

He froze.

“Protect Lily.”

Then another group of armed men entered.

Not Black Veil.

Someone else.

Grant recognized their symbol.

A silver triangle.

Marcus whispered:

“The Council.”

Grant stared.

“The people who control the government.”

Marcus nodded.

“They've been waiting for the Archive.”

Grant understood.

The Black Veil wasn't the highest level.

There was someone above them.

Someone who had manipulated both sides.

A hidden council.

Grant's mother looked at Lily.

“Take her to the chapel.”

“Why?”

“Because the final lock is there.”

Grant nodded.

His mother grabbed his arm again.

“Grant.”

“What?”

“Never let Lily hear the recording.”

“Which recording?”

His mother's expression changed.

“The one where I confess.”

Then she died.

Grant froze.

Claire covered her mouth.

Atlas barked.

The Council's soldiers were closing in.

Marcus shouted:

“Move!”

Grant lifted Lily.

They ran.

Down the stairs.

Through the tunnel.

The old chapel waited at the end.

Inside, Grant found an altar.

A small slot.

He inserted the brass key.

The floor opened.

A hidden recorder appeared.

Grant reached for it.

Then Lily grabbed his hand.

“Daddy.”

He looked down.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

“Grandma said don't listen.”

Grant stopped.

A gunshot echoed behind them.

Marcus shouted:

“They're here!”

Grant grabbed the recorder anyway.

He pressed play.

His mother's voice filled the chapel.

“I killed Evelyn.”

Grant froze.

Claire gasped.

The recording continued.

“I thought it was the only way to protect Lily.”

Grant stared at the device.

His mother continued:

“But I was wrong.”

A pause.

“Evelyn survived.”

Grant's eyes widened.

The voice continued.

“And now she knows the real truth.”

The recording crackled.

Then:

“Grant, your father isn't Lily's enemy.”

“He's protecting her from me.”

The recorder stopped.

Grant stared at the darkness.

Behind him, Evelyn's voice whispered:

“She's finally telling you.”

Grant turned.

Evelyn stood in the chapel.

Alive.

Blood on her clothes.

May you like

She looked at him.

“Now you need to know what your mother did to Lily when she was born.”
