Chapter 9: 2:17 A.M.

At exactly 2:17 a.m., Colonel Nathan Hale's phone rang.

He answered before the second vibration.

"Dad..."

The voice on the other end was barely a whisper.

It belonged to his twenty-eight-year-old daughter, Claire.

She was eight months pregnant.

Nathan sat upright.

"Claire? What's wrong?"

Silence.

He could hear shallow breathing.

Then three words.

"Don't trust him."

The call ended.

Nathan called back immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Straight to voicemail.

After thirty years in the military, Nathan had learned to distinguish fear from panic.

This wasn't panic.

It was controlled fear.

The kind of fear a person feels when someone is standing close enough to hear every word.

He grabbed his car keys.

Forty-three minutes later, he stood outside Claire's apartment.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside...

Everything was spotless.

A mug of tea still warm.

The television quietly playing a late-night cooking show.

A half-folded baby blanket rested on the couch.

But Claire was gone.

Her husband, Eric, emerged from the bedroom rubbing his eyes.

"Nathan? What are you doing here?"

"I got a call from Claire."

Eric frowned.

"She's at her sister's."

Nathan's expression never changed.

"Claire doesn't have a sister."

For the first time, Eric hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Nathan noticed.

He always noticed.

Detective Maya Torres arrived twenty minutes later.

There were no signs of forced entry.

No blood.

No broken furniture.

No struggle.

"If this is an abduction," Maya said, "it's one of the cleanest I've ever seen."

Nathan walked slowly through the apartment.

Military habit.

Observe before speaking.

He stopped beside the dining table.

One chair was slightly out of place.

Only by an inch.

Most people would never have noticed.

He crouched.

A tiny silver charm lay beneath the chair.

A crescent moon.

Nathan recognized it instantly.

He had given it to Claire on her sixteenth birthday.

She wore it every day.

She would never leave without it.

Not willingly.

Eric sat calmly in the kitchen answering questions.

"We argued yesterday."

"About what?"

"Baby names."

"Nothing serious."

"Did Claire seem frightened?"

"No."

"Did she receive any unusual calls?"

"Not that I know of."

His answers came too quickly.

Too smoothly.

Nathan had interrogated enemy prisoners before.

The truthful ones searched their memories.

Liars searched for the safest sentence.

As dawn broke, the forensic team completed its first sweep.

Nothing.

No fingerprints except the family's.

No DNA.

No footprints.

It was as if Claire had simply...

Vanished.

One technician approached Maya.

"We found this."

He held up a small digital baby monitor.

"It wasn't plugged in."

"So?"

"It contains an SD card."

Hours later, the video played inside the police station.

At first...

Nothing unusual.

Claire arranging baby clothes.

Eric leaving for work.

The empty nursery.

Then, at exactly 2:17 a.m., the screen flickered.

Just for two seconds.

When the image returned...

Someone was standing in the nursery.

A tall figure dressed entirely in black.

Face hidden.

The stranger didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't even look at the camera.

Instead...

The figure slowly raised one hand.

And pointed directly toward Claire's bedroom.

The recording ended there.

Not because the memory card was full.

But because someone had deliberately erased everything that happened afterward.

Detective Maya replayed the final frame again and again.

Then she noticed something almost invisible.

Reflected in the nursery window...

There wasn't one intruder.

May you like

There were two.

And the second one was already inside the bedroom.
