Chapter 11: The Leak

No one spoke for several seconds.
Nathan looked around the command vehicle parked outside the tunnel entrance.
Detective Maya Torres.
Officer Liam Chen.
Two forensic technicians.
A dispatcher monitoring radio traffic.
Only six people had heard the words Warehouse Twelve.
Yet someone had warned the kidnappers before the operation even began.
"There are two possibilities," Nathan said quietly.
Maya folded her arms.
"Either someone overheard us..."
"...or someone here is talking."
The sentence settled over the room like concrete.
No one protested.
No one needed to.
Maya made a decision.
"We change the plan."
Nathan looked at her.
"You think the leak is still listening?"
"I know they are."
She spread a city map across the hood of her SUV.
Loud enough for everyone to hear, she pointed toward an abandoned shipping terminal.
"We're redirecting the entire team to Pier Nine."
Several officers nodded.
Radio messages were sent.
Vehicles began moving.
Within minutes, the convoy rolled away.
Except...
It wasn't heading for Pier Nine.
One mile later, Maya split the convoy.
Most of the police continued toward the harbor with lights flashing.
Nathan, Maya, Liam, and two tactical officers quietly turned off onto an unmarked service road.
Their true destination remained Warehouse Twelve.
"If someone tips them off again," Maya said, "we'll know the leak isn't hearing us."
Across the city, inside a dim office lit only by computer monitors, a man watched a live police traffic feed.
His phone buzzed.
A text message appeared.
Police units are moving toward Pier Nine.
He smiled.
Exactly as expected.
He dialed a secure number.
"They took the bait."
A woman's voice answered.
"Good."
"Begin the transfer."
Warehouse Twelve stood beside the old river channel, hidden behind rusted shipping containers and overgrown weeds.
It looked abandoned.
Too abandoned.
Nathan scanned the area through binoculars.
"No guards."
"No vehicles."
"No lights."
Liam frowned.
"That's almost worse."
The tactical team approached from the rear.
Bolt cutters snapped through the chain on a side entrance.
The steel door creaked open.
Inside...
Nothing.
Rows of empty shelves.
Broken pallets.
Dust.
Maya sighed.
"We're late."
Nathan wasn't convinced.
He knelt near the center of the floor.
The dust wasn't evenly spread.
Someone had dragged something heavy across the concrete only hours earlier.
He followed the marks.
They ended beneath a stack of wooden crates.
Together, the officers pulled the crates aside.
A square metal hatch emerged from beneath them.
Liam tugged the handle.
Locked.
One tactical officer used a pry bar.
The hatch burst open.
Cold air rushed upward.
There was a staircase descending into darkness.
Claire followed Evelyn through a maze of underground corridors.
"Where are we going?" Claire whispered.
"Somewhere they won't think to look."
"They?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"The people who built this place."
Claire looked around.
The walls were reinforced concrete.
Old pipes lined the ceiling.
It felt less like a warehouse...
And more like a forgotten bunker.
They stopped outside a heavy steel door.
Evelyn unlocked it with an old brass key.
Inside sat three women.
All pregnant.
All frightened.
One of them couldn't have been older than twenty.
She looked up as Claire entered.
"They found another one..."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"How long have you been here?"
The youngest woman stared at the floor.
"I don't know."
"They never let us see daylight."
Before Claire could ask another question, alarms blared throughout the bunker.
Not the slow warning siren from before.
This one pulsed rapidly.
Urgently.
A voice echoed through hidden speakers.
Security breach. Lower access tunnel.
Evelyn's face drained of color.
"They're here."
Claire looked toward the door.
"My father?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
Instead, she whispered,
"I hope so."
Nathan descended the narrow staircase first.
The beam of his flashlight revealed freshly installed electrical wiring.
Someone had restored power underground.
This wasn't an abandoned warehouse.
It was an active facility hidden beneath one.
Twenty steps down, the staircase opened into a concrete corridor.
Maya crouched beside the wall.
"These security cameras were installed recently."
Nathan looked upward.
One camera slowly turned.
Following them.
"They know we're here."
At that exact moment, every light in the corridor went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Then...
A backup generator hummed to life.
Red emergency lights flickered on.
A metal door somewhere ahead slammed shut.
Another opened.
Footsteps echoed.
Fast.
Deliberate.
Not fleeing.
Approaching.
Nathan raised his flashlight.
Out of the crimson glow emerged a lone figure wearing a dark tactical uniform.
His face was hidden behind a visor.
He stopped twenty feet away.
Then, to everyone's surprise, he slowly placed his rifle on the floor.
He raised both hands.
"I don't have much time," he said.
"My name is Adrian Cross."
Nathan kept his weapon trained on him.
"Who are you?"
Adrian took a slow breath.
"I helped build this place."
He looked directly at Nathan.
"And I know where your daughter is."
Before anyone could move, a single gunshot echoed through the tunnel.
Adrian's eyes widened.
A dark stain spread across his chest.
He collapsed to his knees.
With his last breath, he whispered two words.
May you like
"Level... Four."
Then the tunnel fell silent once again.
