Chapter 6: The Man in the Hallway

The sound of running footsteps echoed through the deserted clinic.
James was the first to move.
"Left corridor!" he shouted.
Daniel sprinted after the fleeing figure, his flashlight cutting through the darkness as dust swirled from the cracked ceiling. The stranger was fast, weaving through abandoned examination rooms as if he knew the building by heart.
"Stop!"
The command disappeared into the empty halls.
Instead of slowing down, the intruder kicked open a rusted fire door.
A deafening alarm shrieked to life.
"It's a distraction," James muttered.
The piercing sound bounced through the building, making it impossible to tell which direction the footsteps had gone.
Daniel rounded the corner just in time to see a shadow leap down the last few stairs.
He chased after it.
When he reached the lobby, the front doors slammed shut.
Outside, a black motorcycle roared to life.
The rider never looked back.
Within seconds, the taillight disappeared into the rain.
Daniel stopped, frustrated.
"He planned every exit."
James walked out a moment later.
"He also left in a hurry."
Daniel looked down.
A leather wallet lay on the wet pavement.
The fleeing man had dropped it.
Inside was no driver's license.
No cash.
Only a faded employee identification card.
BLACKWOOD WOMEN'S CENTER
Name: Thomas Avery
Records Department
"Think it's real?" Daniel asked.
James studied the worn edges.
"No."
"It's too easy."
"But whoever dropped it wanted us to know this name."
Back at the hospital, Emily watched the hallway through the narrow opening of her door.
Two uniformed officers now stood outside.
For the first time in months, she should have felt safe.
Instead, an uneasy feeling settled in her chest.
A familiar melody drifted down the hallway.
Someone was softly whistling an old lullaby.
Emily's face lost all color.
She knew that tune.
Ryan used to whistle it every night before...
Before the abuse began.
She pressed the emergency call button.
A nurse hurried in.
"What's wrong?"
"Did you hear that song?"
The nurse listened.
Silence.
"I don't hear anything."
Emily looked toward the doorway again.
The melody had stopped.
Across town, inside a quiet suburban house, Linda sat alone in her kitchen.
The television displayed breaking news.
Federal investigators continue searching for Ryan Carter in connection with a domestic assault investigation...
She switched it off.
A knock came at the back door.
Three slow knocks.
Exactly the way she had been taught years ago.
She opened it without asking who was there.
A gray-haired man stepped inside carrying an umbrella.
"You've made headlines," he said calmly.
Linda lowered her eyes.
"I didn't expect James Bennett to come himself."
"You should have."
"He was supposed to stay on base."
The man removed his gloves with deliberate care.
"The plan failed."
Linda hesitated.
"What happens now?"
The man looked toward the darkened television.
"We adapt."
"And Ryan?"
"If he's smart..."
The man's expression remained unreadable.
"...he'll never contact you again."
Linda's hands trembled.
"He's my son."
"He was your son the moment he became a liability."
For the first time in years, Linda looked frightened.
Later that evening, forensic analysts examined the wallet recovered outside Blackwood Clinic.
Everything appeared ordinary.
Until one technician held the employee card beneath ultraviolet light.
Hidden writing slowly emerged.
Daniel leaned closer.
"What is it?"
The technician swallowed.
"Coordinates."
James copied them onto a notepad.
The location wasn't another clinic.
It was a cemetery.
Specifically...
The oldest cemetery on the outskirts of the city.
Beneath the coordinates, another hidden message appeared.
Locker 18
Near midnight, James and Daniel stood beneath rows of weathered gravestones.
Rain had finally stopped.
The cemetery caretaker, awakened by a federal warrant, unlocked a small maintenance building.
Inside stood twenty-four rusted storage lockers.
James walked directly to Number 18.
The padlock had already been cut.
Someone had beaten them there.
Daniel slowly opened the metal door.
Inside sat a small cardboard archive box.
Nothing else.
James lifted the lid.
Hundreds of birth certificates.
Hospital wristbands.
Patient admission forms.
Every document carried the same clinic stamp.
Blackwood Women's Center.
Then Daniel noticed something tucked beneath the stack.
A sealed envelope addressed in neat handwriting.
To Colonel James Bennett
James frowned.
"They knew I'd find this."
He carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Only one sentence had been typed.
You're asking the wrong question. Don't ask who hurt your daughter. Ask who chose her.
James read it twice.
A cold realization settled over him.
Until now, they had believed Emily became a victim after meeting Ryan.
But what if Ryan had never been the beginning?
What if Emily had been selected years before she even knew his name?
As James silently folded the letter, neither man noticed the tiny red light blinking inside the empty locker.
Miles away, in a dimly lit room lined with surveillance monitors, someone watched them in real time.
A gloved hand reached toward a keyboard.

One command was entered.
Phase Two.
