Chapter 1: The Men Outside the Door

The pounding on the apartment door wasn't hurried.

It was measured.

Disciplined.

The unmistakable rhythm of trained boots moving as one.

Ryan's face turned ghost white.

Linda looked toward the entrance, confusion flashing across her features before panic quickly replaced it.

Colonel James Bennett never took his eyes off the bruises covering his daughter's body.

His breathing remained steady.

Too steady.

Years of military command had taught him one lesson above all others.

The angriest man in the room was never the one who shouted.

Slowly, he reached down and pulled the blanket completely away.

Emily instinctively tried to cover herself.

She couldn't.

Dark bruises stretched across nearly every part of her body.

Old wounds.

Fresh wounds.

Some yellowing with age.

Others still swollen from recent blows.

The handprint over her pregnant stomach looked almost unreal.

Someone had struck a woman carrying a child.

His grandchild.

Ryan finally spoke.

"Colonel... please... it's not what it looks like."

James didn't answer.

He simply removed his phone from his pocket and quietly took several photographs.

Every bruise.

Every cut.

Every fingerprint-shaped mark around Emily's wrists.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Ryan stepped forward.

"You can't do that!"

James lifted one finger without looking at him.

"Another step..."

Ryan froze.

"...and you'll regret it for the rest of your life."

There wasn't a hint of emotion in the Colonel's voice.

Only certainty.

Linda forced herself to laugh.

"Those pictures don't prove anything."

"Pregnant women bruise easily."

"Emily has always been clumsy."

Emily closed her eyes.

She had heard those exact words so many times she almost believed them herself.

James finally looked at Linda.

"I've commanded soldiers who survived roadside bombs."

"I've seen victims crushed beneath collapsed buildings."

"I've testified in military courts."

"I know the difference between accidental injuries..."

His eyes settled on the bruises around Emily's wrists.

"...and restraint."

Silence flooded the bedroom.

Another loud knock echoed from the front door.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Ryan jumped.

James didn't.

He already knew exactly who had arrived.

Three days earlier, something had bothered him.

Emily had missed another video call.

When Ryan answered instead, James noticed something unusual.

For less than half a second...

A shadow had crossed the screen.

Emily.

Standing in the background.

Not speaking.

Not smiling.

Just watching.

Then Ryan had quickly moved the phone away.

That tiny moment refused to leave James's mind.

Years of military intelligence had taught him to trust instinct.

So after ending the call...

He made one phone call of his own.

Not to the local police.

To someone he trusted far more.

Major Daniel Brooks.

Former Military Police.

Current investigator with a federal violent crimes task force.

James had only said one sentence.

"I think my daughter is in danger."

Daniel didn't ask for evidence.

He simply replied,

"I'll be there."

The pounding came again.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Ryan slowly backed away from the bedroom.

"I'll get rid of whoever that is."

James blocked the doorway.

"No."

Ryan forced another smile.

"Colonel... this is a family matter."

James stared at him.

"No."

Only one word.

But somehow it carried the weight of an order given on a battlefield.

Ryan tried to move around him.

The Colonel stepped sideways.

Perfectly.

Almost effortlessly.

The movement was so precise Ryan barely realized he'd been blocked.

Linda's confidence finally cracked.

"This is harassment!"

"You can't keep us inside our own home!"

James finally answered.

"I haven't."

Another knock.

Louder this time.

Then a voice came through the apartment door.

"Federal investigators."

"Open the door."

Ryan's knees nearly buckled.

Emily looked up in confusion.

Federal?

She hadn't called anyone.

James hadn't said a word.

So who...

The answer appeared on James's face.

He had planned this.

Not everything.

But enough.

Ryan suddenly lunged.

Not toward James.

Toward the nightstand.

Toward Emily's phone.

James reacted before anyone else even understood what was happening.

One step.

One grab.

Ryan's wrist twisted sharply.

The phone hit the floor.

Crash.

Ryan screamed.

"You broke my arm!"

James calmly released him.

"No."

"I prevented you from destroying evidence."

Linda rushed to Ryan.

"You assaulted him!"

James looked toward the doorway.

"Daniel."

The bedroom door opened.

Standing there was a tall man wearing a dark FBI task force jacket over civilian clothes.

Beside him stood two Chicago police detectives.

Behind them...

Two uniformed officers.

Daniel Brooks quietly surveyed the room.

His eyes stopped on Emily.

Then on the bruises.

His expression hardened immediately.

"My God..."

One detective slowly removed a small camera.

The other opened a notebook.

Ryan suddenly shouted.

"This is illegal!"

"You don't have a warrant!"

Daniel looked at him.

"We're responding to suspected domestic violence involving serious bodily injury."

His gaze shifted toward Emily's swollen stomach.

"And possible assault against an unborn child."

Ryan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Linda immediately stepped forward.

"This girl has mental problems."

"She's unstable."

"She hurts herself."

Emily flinched.

Even now...

Even standing in front of police...

Linda was still trying to rewrite reality.

James quietly knelt beside his daughter.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

Emily's lips trembled.

"I..."

Her voice barely existed.

"They'll kill me."

The room fell silent.

Daniel slowly crouched beside the bed.

"Emily..."

His voice softened.

"Who will kill you?"

Emily stared at Ryan.

Then at Linda.

Her entire body began shaking violently.

Ryan spoke first.

"She's hallucinating."

"The pregnancy medications—"

Emily suddenly screamed.

"No!"

Everyone froze.

Tears streamed down her face.

"He kicks the baby!"

"I begged him to stop!"

"I begged him!"

Silence exploded through the apartment harder than any scream.

One detective stopped writing.

The other slowly lowered his pen.

Daniel's face turned pale.

James never blinked.

Emily kept talking.

The words poured out like water breaking through a dam.

"The stairs..."

"The belt..."

"The nights he locked me in..."

"The food..."

"The money..."

"The doctor..."

Each sentence revealed another layer.

Another secret.

Another nightmare.

Ryan whispered,

"Emily..."

She looked directly into his eyes.

For the first time in months...

She wasn't afraid.

"I recorded everything."

Ryan stopped breathing.

Linda's head snapped toward Emily.

"What?"

Emily slowly pointed toward the nursery that had never been finished.

"Inside the teddy bear."

Every eye turned toward the baby's room.

Ryan moved.

Fast.

Far too fast.

He sprinted toward the hallway.

Daniel shouted,

"Stop him!"

But Ryan was already running.

Straight toward the nursery.

Straight toward whatever had been hidden inside that teddy bear.

And no one yet realized...

May you like

He wasn't trying to destroy the evidence.

He was trying to retrieve something far more dangerous.
