Chapter 2: The Teddy Bear's Secret

Ryan burst out of the bedroom with a speed born not of courage, but of desperation.

"Stop him!" Daniel Brooks shouted.

One of the detectives lunged forward, but Ryan slammed the hallway table into his path. A framed wedding photo crashed to the floor, glass exploding across the hardwood.

The photograph landed faceup.

Emily smiled from a happier time, her hand resting in Ryan's.

The image felt like a cruel joke.

Ryan reached the nursery.

The room had been decorated months ago, but it no longer looked like a place meant to welcome a child. Pale yellow walls were lined with unopened boxes of diapers, a white crib stood untouched in the corner, and dozens of stuffed animals sat neatly arranged on a shelf.

His eyes locked onto one bear.

Brown fur.

Blue ribbon.

The same teddy bear Colonel Bennett had mailed from Texas after learning Emily was expecting.

Ryan snatched it from the shelf.

"Drop it!"

Daniel's voice thundered behind him.

Instead, Ryan ripped the bear open with both hands.

Cotton stuffing burst into the air like snow.

Emily gasped from the bedroom.

"No..."

Inside the torn bear wasn't just a recorder.

There was a small black flash drive wrapped in clear plastic.

Ryan's fingers closed around it.

His expression changed.

Pure panic.

Colonel Bennett saw it instantly.

Whatever was on that drive frightened Ryan far more than prison.

Ryan turned toward the bedroom window.

"He's going to run!" one officer yelled.

Without hesitation, Ryan threw a chair through the glass.

The window shattered outward.

Cold Chicago air rushed into the apartment.

Ignoring the jagged glass, Ryan climbed onto the windowsill.

Three floors below, the apartment parking lot stretched beneath him.

Daniel cursed.

"Don't do it!"

Ryan looked over his shoulder, clutching the flash drive so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"If you arrest me..."

He laughed nervously.

"...you'll never know who else is involved."

Then he jumped.

Emily screamed.

Colonel Bennett rushed to the broken window.

Ryan hit the roof of a parked SUV before rolling onto the pavement with a sickening thud.

For one horrifying second, no one moved.

Then...

Ryan staggered to his feet.

His left arm dangled unnaturally, but somehow he was still running.

"After him!" Daniel barked.

The detectives sprinted downstairs.

Police sirens echoed outside.

Within seconds, the apartment complex erupted into chaos.

Colonel Bennett remained where he was.

He didn't chase Ryan.

He turned back toward his daughter.

Emily had begun sobbing uncontrollably.

"He still has it..."

James knelt beside her.

"What is on that drive?"

She shook her head violently.

"I... I can't..."

Her breathing became rapid.

Too rapid.

Daniel noticed immediately.

"She's hyperventilating."

Emily grabbed her stomach.

A sharp pain shot through her body.

She cried out.

"My baby..."

Every face in the room changed.

Another contraction struck.

Harder.

Linda stepped backward.

"It... it can't be labor."

Emily doubled over.

"It hurts..."

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

"Call an ambulance! Seven-month pregnant female, possible trauma, premature labor!"

One officer was already speaking into his radio.

Colonel Bennett gently held Emily's hand.

"Look at me."

She tried.

Another wave of pain hit.

"I can't lose her."

"You won't."

"You don't know that."

James squeezed her hand.

"I've survived wars because I never accepted defeat before the battle began."

His voice softened.

"And neither will my granddaughter."

Emily looked at him through tears.

"You think it's a girl?"

He smiled for the first time that day.

"I've thought that since the first ultrasound."

She almost laughed.

Almost.

Then another contraction ripped through her body.

Outside, ambulance sirens wailed closer.

Meanwhile...

Ryan limped through the apartment parking lot, leaving a trail of blood behind him.

Every step sent agony through his shattered arm.

But he never loosened his grip on the flash drive.

His phone rang.

The screen displayed only one word.

Mother.

He answered immediately.

"Mom..."

Linda's voice shook.

"What happened?"

"They know."

"How much?"

"Everything."

Silence.

Then Linda whispered,

"Did you get the drive?"

Ryan looked down at it.

"Yes."

"Good."

"Destroy it."

Ryan hesitated.

"No."

"What?"

"If I destroy it..."

"They'll put everything on me."

Linda stopped breathing.

Ryan leaned against a brick wall.

"There are names on this drive."

"What names?"

"The people who paid us."

A long pause followed.

Then Linda spoke more quietly than before.

"You promised you'd never look."

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"I got curious."

"What did you see?"

His face lost all color.

"There were contracts."

"Bank transfers."

"Medical records."

"And videos."

Linda whispered,

"No..."

Ryan swallowed.

"It wasn't just Emily."

Across town...

Inside the apartment...

Paramedics wheeled Emily toward the ambulance.

As they lifted her onto the stretcher, something slipped from beneath the mattress and fell onto the floor.

Colonel Bennett noticed it immediately.

A folded envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

His name was written across the front in Emily's handwriting.

Dad.

If you're reading this...

...I wasn't brave enough to tell you myself.

James slowly opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper trembled in his hands.

It began with a sentence that made the blood drain from his face.

Ryan wasn't the first man they forced me to marry.

James read the line again.

Then again.

Daniel returned from the hallway, breathing hard.

"They lost Ryan."

Colonel Bennett looked up slowly.

His eyes had changed.

"What is it?" Daniel asked.

James silently handed him the letter.

Daniel read only the first paragraph.

His jaw tightened.

"This started years before Ryan."

James nodded once.

"Much earlier."

Neither man noticed Emily watching them from the ambulance.

She knew exactly what was written in that letter.

She also knew...

She had left out the worst part.

Because there was one name she still couldn't bring herself to write.

May you like

One person whose involvement would destroy everything her father believed about the people he trusted most.

And at that very moment, miles away, that person was calmly walking into the hospital where Emily was being taken...
