Chapter 6 - The Missing HeirDamian's greatest fear came true when one of his pups vanished.Damian had never known fear like this.

Finn was gone.

His scent disappeared at the castle wall.

No trail.

No footprints.

No guard had seen anything.

Wren screamed until her voice turned hoarse.

Alora tried calming her.

Nothing worked.

Damian stood frozen.

Then he noticed something.

Finn's blanket was not torn.

It was folded.

Carefully.

Whoever took him had not been fighting.

They had been trusted.

A servant.

A guard.

Someone close.

"Lock down the castle," Damian ordered.

"No one leaves."

Alora looked at the silver pendant.

"Serafina."

They found her in the infirmary.

She woke to Damian standing over her.

"Where is Finn?"

Her face went white.

"I don't know."

"Your pendant was beside his cradle."

"I lost it."

"You expect me to believe that?"

Serafina looked at Alora.

Then whispered:

"Varek had a daughter."

Damian froze.

"Impossible."

"Her name was Elara."

"Where is she?"

"Dead."

Serafina's expression twisted.

"I watched her die."

"Then who took my son?"

Serafina started crying.

"Someone who wants you to believe I did."

Damian suddenly heard a howl outside.

His guards had found something.

A piece of black cloth.

A single silver button.

The emblem of the royal nursery staff.

They followed the scent through the eastern forest.

Three miles.

Five.

Ten.

Then they found a wagon.

Empty.

Inside was a small carved wolf toy that belonged to Finn.

Alora crouched.

There was another smell.

Rosemary.

"The monastery?"

Damian shook his head.

"No."

He looked at the trees.

"Someone wants us to think that."

A twig snapped.

Damian attacked.

A masked wolf blocked him.

The fight was brutal.

Damian finally ripped the mask away.

A young woman stared back.

Alora gasped.

She recognized her.

"Selene."

Her childhood friend from the southern pack.

Selene smiled.

"Hello, Alora."

"Where is Finn?"

Selene laughed.

"You still don't understand."

She looked at Damian.

"The child is safe."

"Where?"

"In the hands of the only person capable of protecting him from you."

Damian's wolf roared.

"Who?"

Selene whispered:

"His mother."

"Serafina is in the castle."

"Not the mother you know."

Selene bit her lip.

Poison.

She collapsed.

Damian caught her too late.

But before dying, Selene spoke one final sentence.

"Ask Serafina why Finn's eyes turned silver."

Damian returned to the castle.

Serafina saw his face.

She knew immediately.

"You found something."

Damian placed a blanket on the table.

"I found out what you never told me."

Serafina stared.

"Finn isn't like Wren."

"No."

Damian's eyes became ice.

"Finn is the heir mentioned in the prophecy."

Serafina began shaking.

May you like

Then Damian whispered:

"And you knew from the day he was born."
