CHAPTER 8: THE HOUSE THAT KEPT ITS OWN SECRETS

Arthur didn't hesitate.
"Everyone back to the vehicles."
Within seconds, the convoy was racing through the rain toward the Carter estate.
Marcus sat in the passenger seat, staring at the photographs spread across his lap.
Claire alive after the reported accident.
The mysterious woman with the scar.
Emily's kidnapping.
The hidden tunnels.
Nothing fit together anymore.
"It doesn't make sense," Marcus muttered.
Arthur kept his eyes on the road.
"It does."
Marcus looked at him.
"Someone doesn't want us looking outside the mansion."
Arthur nodded.
"Every clue..."
"...leads us back home."
Meanwhile...
The Carter mansion had become strangely quiet.
Too quiet.
Most of the staff had gathered in the ballroom under security supervision.
Only a skeleton crew remained scattered through the enormous estate.
Then...
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The backup generator had never failed before.
Tonight, it groaned like an old machine struggling to breathe.
A housekeeper looked up nervously.
"Did anyone else hear that?"
A faint sound echoed somewhere above.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
As if someone wearing heavy boots was walking across the third floor.
But the third floor had already been cleared.
Victoria remained locked inside her bedroom.
Claire's recorded message still echoed in her ears.
She opened the old envelope marked:
DO NOT OPEN UNLESS ARTHUR LEARNS THE TRUTH.
Inside...
A single key.
A folded map of the mansion.
And a handwritten note.
Victoria recognized the handwriting immediately.
Claire.
The note read:
If you're holding this, then I failed.
The house has one room even Arthur doesn't know about.
If Emily is ever in danger... she'll be taken there.
Don't trust the security system.
Don't trust the cameras.
And whatever happens... don't trust the man with the silver watch.
Victoria's eyes widened.
The silver watch.
Arthur had seen it in the basement footage.
Marcus had enlarged it.
Someone inside the mansion...
Someone close enough to move freely...
Had worn that watch.
A memory flashed through her mind.
A birthday party.
Two years earlier.
One of Arthur's oldest employees raising a champagne glass.
A silver watch glinting beneath the chandelier.
Victoria whispered the name before she could stop herself.
"...Daniel."
At that exact moment...
Marcus's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Marcus."
A breathless security officer spoke.
"Sir..."
"We found Daniel."
Marcus frowned.
"Where?"
"In the maintenance garage."
"Is he alive?"
A pause.
"No."
The convoy reached the mansion in less than twelve minutes.
Arthur jumped out before the SUV had fully stopped.
The maintenance garage stood at the far end of the estate.
Police tape hadn't been placed yet.
Marcus wanted Arthur to see the scene first.
Inside...
Daniel Harper.
Head of estate maintenance for seventeen years.
Dead.
He sat slumped in a chair.
No visible wounds.
No blood.
His eyes remained open.
Staring toward the ceiling.
Dr. Lawson examined the body.
"No signs of struggle."
Arthur looked around.
"Poison?"
The doctor nodded slowly.
"Most likely."
Marcus searched Daniel's pockets.
Wallet.
Keys.
Phone.
Then...
A silver wristwatch.
Exactly like the one from the basement footage.
Arthur's jaw tightened.
Marcus carefully removed it.
The back of the watch had been engraved.
A.C.
Arthur frowned.
"Those are my initials."
Marcus nodded.
"It was a gift."
Arthur remembered.
Ten years ago.
Every senior employee had received the same commemorative watch celebrating Carter Global's anniversary.
Hundreds of identical watches existed.
The clue suddenly meant almost nothing.
Or perhaps...
It had always been meant to mislead.
One officer called from the far corner.
"Sir!"
Arthur walked over.
Behind a workbench lay Daniel's toolbox.
Inside...
A hidden compartment.
Marcus pried it open.
The contents made everyone stare.
Bundles of cash.
Fake passports.
A handgun.
And a thick manila folder.
Arthur opened it.
Personnel files.
Dozens of them.
Every employee in the mansion.
Each file contained photographs.
Daily routines.
Weaknesses.
Family information.
Someone had been spying on everyone for years.
Marcus flipped to the final page.
Emily Carter.
Arthur's daughter.
Her school schedule.
Favorite toys.
Medical history.
The last page contained a handwritten sentence.
Phase One Complete.
Phase Two Begins After Arthur Learns About Claire.
Arthur closed the folder.
His face had become unreadable.
"This wasn't a kidnapping."
Marcus looked up.
Arthur continued.
"It was a plan."
"A plan that's been running for years."
Suddenly...
Victoria burst into the garage.
She held Claire's map in one hand.
Her face was pale.
"I know where Emily is."
Every officer turned.
Arthur stared at her.
"You expect me to believe you?"
Victoria threw the map onto the workbench.
"Claire left this."
Arthur unfolded it.
The mansion's blueprint covered the page.
But one section had been drawn afterward in red ink.
A hidden chamber.
Beneath the mansion's old library.
A room that appeared on no official architectural plans.
Arthur looked at Victoria.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
She lowered her head.
"Because I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Victoria looked directly into his eyes.
"For ten years..."
"I thought the wrong person was hunting us."
Silence filled the garage.
Arthur spoke quietly.
"Who is it?"
Victoria answered in barely more than a whisper.
"The person who planned Claire's death..."
"...was never the mastermind."
Arthur frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Victoria's voice trembled.
"There was someone above him."
"Him?"
Arthur repeated.
"Who?"
Victoria took a shaky breath.
She finally said the name she had buried for a decade.
"Your father."
The entire garage went silent.
Arthur's expression froze.
His father.
Alexander Carter.
Founder of the Carter empire.
Officially dead...
For eight years.
Before Arthur could respond, every phone in the garage buzzed at exactly the same moment.
A new video had arrived.
No sender.
Arthur pressed Play.
The screen showed Emily sitting safely on a bed.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then a voice behind the camera calmly said:
"Emily..."
"Tell your father who's sitting beside you."
Emily turned her head and smiled through her tears.
"Grandpa..."
May you like
Arthur's blood ran cold.
Because his father had been buried eight years ago.
