CHAPTER 10: BENEATH THE FAMILY CEMETERY

The blinking dot moved slowly.

Not across a road.

Not through a forest.

Through the Carter estate.

Straight beneath the private family cemetery.

Marcus zoomed in again.

The GPS signal was precise to less than a meter.

He looked at Arthur.

"Whoever sent this wants us to find them."

Arthur's answer came without hesitation.

"Or wants us to die trying."

Neither possibility changed what came next.

He grabbed a flashlight.

"Let's move."

The Carter family cemetery rested on the highest hill of the estate.

Granite headstones stood in perfect rows beneath ancient oak trees.

Rain had finally stopped.

The clouds drifted apart just enough for moonlight to spill across the marble.

Alexander Carter's monument towered above the others.

Black stone.

Gold lettering.

Fresh flowers.

Arthur hadn't visited in months.

Now he stood before his father's grave, wondering if anyone had ever been buried beneath it.

Marcus checked the GPS.

"The signal is directly below us."

Arthur looked around.

"There has to be an entrance."

The tactical team spread out.

They searched every statue.

Every mausoleum.

Every stone path.

Nothing.

Ten minutes passed.

Then one officer called out.

"Sir!"

Arthur hurried over.

Near Claire's grave...

One corner of the grass had sunk slightly into the ground.

Almost invisible.

Marcus knelt and brushed away damp leaves.

Hidden beneath them was a rusted iron ring.

Exactly like the one beneath the nursery.

Arthur pulled.

Nothing.

Four officers joined him.

With a groan of old machinery, a section of earth slowly lifted.

Cold air rushed upward.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Marcus muttered,

"Another tunnel..."

Arthur looked down.

"No."

"This one was never meant to be found."

The staircase ended before an enormous steel door.

No handle.

No lock.

Only a small brass plaque.

It read:

THE FOUNDATION

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur didn't know.

But something about the name disturbed him.

He pressed against the door.

Nothing.

Then he noticed five circular indentations in the metal.

Different sizes.

Like places where objects once fit.

Victoria stepped forward.

Her face had gone pale.

"I've seen this before."

Arthur turned.

"Where?"

"In Alexander's office."

"He kept five bronze medallions inside a glass case."

Marcus immediately radioed the mansion.

"Search Alexander Carter's study."

Seconds later, the reply came.

"The display case is empty."

Arthur closed his eyes.

Someone had taken them.

Recently.

A voice echoed from behind them.

"You won't need the medallions."

Every weapon swung toward the sound.

An old man stepped from the shadows.

White beard.

Bent posture.

Caretaker's uniform.

Arthur recognized him instantly.

Samuel.

The cemetery groundskeeper.

He had worked for the Carter family for over thirty years.

Marcus lowered his weapon slightly.

"Samuel?"

The old man smiled sadly.

"I've been waiting."

Arthur stepped closer.

"You know about this place."

Samuel nodded.

"I helped build it."

Silence.

Arthur's pulse quickened.

"My father built tunnels beneath the cemetery?"

Samuel looked into Arthur's eyes.

"Your father didn't build tunnels."

"He built a city."

Nobody spoke.

The old caretaker continued.

"Everything beneath this estate..."

"The bunkers."

"The passageways."

"The hidden rooms."

"They're connected."

Marcus frowned.

"Connected to what?"

Samuel answered quietly.

"The Foundation."

Arthur looked at the steel door again.

"What is it?"

Samuel took a long breath.

"A council."

"A secret organization."

"Your family didn't become billionaires because they were lucky."

"They became powerful because they belonged."

Victoria whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Samuel nodded.

"Alexander wasn't its founder."

"He wasn't even its leader."

"He was only one member."

Arthur's world tilted.

For years he had believed the Carter empire had been built through ruthless business.

Now...

That certainty crumbled.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Where is Emily?"

Samuel's expression softened.

"Safe."

Arthur grabbed the old man's arm.

"Take me to her."

Samuel didn't resist.

"I can't."

"Why not?"

"Because only one person can open that door."

Arthur frowned.

"Who?"

Samuel looked directly at him.

"You."

Arthur stared at the steel entrance.

"I don't have the medallions."

"You don't need them."

Samuel pointed toward the plaque.

"Alexander changed the lock."

Arthur examined it more closely.

The brass letters looked strangely polished.

As if touched many times.

Then he noticed something.

The first letter of each word.

T

F

Two initials.

His initials?

No.

Something else.

Samuel smiled faintly.

"Read the inscription aloud."

Arthur hesitated.

Then spoke.

"The Foundation."

Nothing happened.

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

"Read what's written beneath it."

Arthur wiped years of dust from the plaque.

Hidden beneath the grime...

Tiny engraved words appeared.

He read them slowly.

The Firstborn Opens The Gate.

Marcus looked at Arthur.

"You're Alexander's firstborn."

Arthur placed his hand against the cold steel.

For a moment...

Nothing.

Then a soft click echoed from deep inside the mechanism.

The massive door began to unlock.

Metal groaned.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

The entrance slowly opened inward.

Beyond it...

Not an old bunker.

Not a storage room.

An underground complex.

Bright lights.

Fresh air.

Electricity.

Surveillance cameras.

It looked alive.

Occupied.

As if people had been living beneath the mansion all along.

Arthur took one step inside.

Every monitor on the walls switched on simultaneously.

Dozens of screens.

Each displaying a different room.

On one of them...

Emily sat peacefully, coloring with crayons.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She looked safe.

Then another screen lit up.

An elderly man in an immaculate black suit sat behind a polished wooden desk.

Silver hair.

Sharp blue eyes.

Perfect posture.

He looked exactly as Arthur remembered.

Not older.

Not weaker.

Alexander Carter.

Alive.

He smiled into the camera.

"Welcome home, son."

Arthur's breathing stopped.

Alexander folded his hands.

"I've been waiting ten years for you to open that door."

Before Arthur could speak, another figure stepped into the frame beside Alexander.

A woman.

She slowly turned toward the camera.

Marcus gasped.

Victoria stumbled backward.

Arthur's face drained of all color.

May you like

Because standing beside his supposedly dead father...

Was Claire.
