CHAPTER 7: THE WOMAN WITH THE SCAR

The room fell silent.
Emily blinked.
She didn't understand.
Adults often spoke in strange sentences when they were sad.
"I was supposed to die."
The woman repeated the words quietly, almost to herself.
Emily clutched her stuffed rabbit tighter.
"My daddy says people shouldn't lie."
The woman's lips curved into a faint smile.
"Your father used to say that to someone else."
Emily tilted her head.
"To my mommy?"
The woman didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward the rain-streaked window.
Far away, thunder rolled across the hills.
"You have your mother's eyes," she whispered.
"They're the reason you're still alive."
Emily's tiny voice trembled.
"Are... are you going to hurt me?"
The woman looked genuinely shocked.
"No."
"Never."
"Then why can't I go home?"
Pain crossed the woman's face.
"Because if you go home now..."
"...someone else will finish what they started ten years ago."
Twenty minutes away...
Arthur's convoy sped through the storm.
Three armored SUVs tore down the empty highway.
Rain hammered against the windshield.
Marcus studied the photo of the abandoned church again.
"Our search teams haven't found movement."
Arthur stared out the window.
"They won't."
Marcus frowned.
"You think it's another trap?"
Arthur nodded.
"Every clue we've received was meant to lead us."
"But not directly to Emily."
"To something else."
Marcus thought about it.
"The basement."
"The journal."
"The photograph."
"The phone calls."
Arthur finished the thought.
"They're forcing me to reopen Claire's death."
Marcus looked at him.
"Do you believe it?"
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
Then he spoke so quietly that only Marcus could hear.
"I don't know what I believe anymore."
Back at the mansion...
Victoria couldn't stop shaking.
She locked herself inside her bedroom.
Then she dragged a heavy trunk from beneath the bed.
The brass lock was old.
Almost antique.
She opened it.
Inside lay dozens of newspaper clippings.
Photographs.
Letters.
Court documents.
And one faded envelope marked:
DO NOT OPEN UNLESS ARTHUR LEARNS THE TRUTH
Victoria stared at it.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I tried to stop this..."
She whispered.
"I tried..."
A voice answered from behind her.
"No."
"You tried to hide it."
Victoria spun around.
Nobody.
The room was empty.
Then...
Three soft knocks echoed from inside her walk-in closet.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
She backed away slowly.
The closet door creaked open by itself.
Darkness.
Nothing else.
Victoria grabbed a fireplace poker.
Her breathing became ragged.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
She forced herself closer.
One step.
Another.
Then she swung the door wide open.
Empty.
Except for a small tape recorder sitting on the floor.
Its Play button had already been pressed.
Static crackled.
Then a familiar voice emerged.
Claire.
Victoria's hands began to tremble uncontrollably.
The recording sounded old.
As if it had been made years earlier.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...it means I was right."
Victoria dropped to her knees.
"No..."
Claire continued.
"I don't know who will find this."
"But if it's Arthur..."
"I'm sorry."
"If it's Victoria..."
"I hope you finally found the courage."
Victoria buried her face in her hands.
The recording wasn't finished.
"Don't let Emily grow up believing I abandoned her."
Click.
Silence.
Victoria broke.
For the first time in years...
She cried.
Not elegant tears.
Not carefully performed grief.
Raw.
Uncontrolled.
Meanwhile...
Arthur's convoy reached Saint Bartholomew Church.
The ancient stone building stood alone atop a windswept hill.
Its stained-glass windows had long since shattered.
The wooden doors hung crooked on rusted hinges.
Marcus signaled the tactical team.
"Clear every room."
The officers spread out.
Arthur entered first.
Dust covered everything.
Pews.
Candles.
The altar.
No signs of Emily.
No footprints.
No recent activity.
One officer called out.
"Sir!"
Arthur hurried toward the old bell tower.
Hidden beneath loose floorboards...
They discovered a narrow chamber.
Inside...
A folding chair.
A thermos.
Children's coloring books.
Fresh food wrappers.
Someone had been here recently.
Very recently.
Marcus knelt beside the wrappers.
"They're still warm."
Arthur looked around.
"She's gone."
"No."
Marcus pointed upward.
"Look."
On the stone wall someone had written in chalk:
YOU'RE TEN YEARS TOO LATE.
Beneath it hung another photograph.
Arthur pulled it down.
It showed Claire standing beside her SUV.
The timestamp stunned him.
The photo had been taken...
Two days after her reported death.
Arthur stared at the date.
His mind refused to accept it.
"It's fake."
Marcus wasn't convinced.
"The timestamp could have been altered."
Arthur flipped the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
Claire's handwriting.
He knew it instantly.
It read:
Arthur... if you're reading this, ask yourself one question.
Who identified my body?
Arthur's heart stopped.
He remembered.
Not the police.
Not the coroner.
The body had been burned beyond recognition.
Identification had relied on...
A family member.
Someone who insisted the remains were Claire's.
Someone who never requested a DNA confirmation.
Someone who cried harder than anyone else at the funeral.
Victoria.
At that exact moment, Marcus's radio crackled.
"Commander!"
Marcus grabbed it.
"Report."
The officer's voice was urgent.
"We searched the entire church."
"And?"
"We found tire tracks."
Marcus looked at Arthur.
"They're fresh."
Arthur asked,
"Where do they lead?"
The answer sent a chill through every person present.
May you like
"They lead..."
"...back toward the Carter mansion."
